I was friends with a woman who is about my age (70's). She has epilepsy, fortunately controlled by medication. When she was a child, she'd have seizures. Instead of taking her to a physician, her parents took her to their minister (a fundamentalist). He proclaimed that the seizures were a sign of demonic possession. The next time she had one, they were to beat her until "the demon was gone". They continued to do this until CPS became involved & she was removed from her parent's custody.

I think that's what happened to Annalise Michael. Her mom got pregnant before marriage and one report on UA-cam was saying her daughter was the sacrificial lamb to attone for her mother's sin, so she encouraged the belief it was possession and not a medical condition. To me that's worse than child abuse. It's betrayal based on delusion.

I went to a “Christian” high school and it was terrible. If you weren’t the typical white social butterfly, you were gawked at like an animal at a zoo. Plus my teachers made every excuse possible for me to get into trouble because I was autistic. In their minds, I should’ve been in an asylum. I’m glad to be rid of that place and I have been convincing many others not to send their children there.

While I had many of these experiences, religion was never shoved down my throat. It was my mother's need to have me fit in and not be an embarrassment to her. She was raised rich, and was, and still is, extremely judgemental of any behavior she deems to be unacceptable (something without class or refinement). She doesn't say the quiet part out loud, but if it isn't bourgeoisie, she scoffs at it. No cartoons or video games for me, no no, it was poetry and plays and painting. Growing up I was made fun of at school for being a weirdo nerd, and mocked/derided by my mother once I got home for not being popular. My father was never home, he busted his ass to allow my mom to live in luxury. Church was all apart of this of course, but again, the message wasn't about sin or going to hell, it was the need to fit in and live a high class life. She never understood that the opera, orchestrated music, plays etc. was what made me unpopular, along with my entitled attitude. She was excited when I began to study theology to become a minister, and she'd brag every chance she got about it. Well, studying the faith got me realizing that flaunting ones status and privilege were not okay, as is behavior that could be classified as holier than thou. Long story short, I'm an atheist now and living my best nerdy life, helping others and working with people my mother would be disgusted to even look at.

These parents just seem utterly insane.
I’m lucky enough to have religious parents that mostly arent extremist ones, and because of that I myself am religious (Christianity, although I am in a state of intense stagnation)
There are a few types of christians from what I’ve seen online, but the 2 I see most are
    1. “Christians” who hold the values too aggressively and thus go against those values, like those who think pokemon is satanic due to having an evolution mechanic, and these are the ones mostly featured in this video.
    2. Christians who hold the values in a correct manner, being respectful and reasonable with how they share their beliefs with others and are actually nice to be around with how they treat people with kindness whenever they can but know how to also condemn correctly.
I also see a middle-ground between these 2 where some people (children, I assume) go around and spam comment sections with very long copypastas of why you should repent, when that’s not how sharing the gospel is done and makes you come off in a bad way.

My parents are divorced and I live with my Mom half the week. She’s a Christian but not an extremest, though she hates LGBTQ+ and thinks everyone is actually straight and is just manipulated by the internet if they are part of the LGBTQ+ community. Because of this my bolder sister who is pan sexual hasn’t been able to come out to her about it, and she doesn’t believe that I’m aro/ace. She just thinks I have depression and self image issues that are making me feel like nobody can live me. I do have self image issues because of my Grandma but I’m getting a little bit better slowly and I still think it’s wrong of my Mom to not believe me and make my sister feel like she can’t come out…

I have a lot of religious trauma relating to Christianity because of my dad's toxic family. Many of the Christians I know are toxic and judgemental people, however I also know Christians who are very charitable and kind people. Because of my religious trauma and other factors, I am not Christian but I always keep in mind that there are some good ones out there. I think Christians tend to be very extreme in one end or the other, either one of the most thoughtful, charitable, and kind people or the most cruel, judgemental, and inconsiderate.

I grew up in a pretty normal Christian family. We weren’t regular church goers, but we did partake in church activities. I was baptized, I went to Sunday school, I made communion, and I’m still friends with a lot of my old church members. But by the time I got to high school I had started to undergo a religious crisis where I was really beginning to question the validity of the Bible and the existence of God. I won’t pretend that this wasn’t one of the scariest experiences I’ve ever had, coming to terms with forming my own views on existence, and I had several mental breakdowns over it. Fortunately, I also had a very strong support network and my parents were more than willing to help me through it, even if it meant that I may not come out the other side the same. My current beliefs lean more towards agnosticism, and though my mother still encourages me to have faith, she doesn’t force anything on me, and was even very supportive of my brother when he came out a bi.
TLDR; religion doesn’t make bad people. Bad people just use it as an excuse to be bad people.

My mom was pretty religious growing up but not extremist. She didn’t let me read the HP books for a long time. She ended up buying the books for me cus she realized it would help me make friends (it did). Over a decade later and she still buys me HP stuff.
She also changed her views on LGBTQ+. She…didn’t take me coming out the first time well. Read all the Bible verses you would think of. Second time was part of a long letter after I got into a seriously deep hole and seriously considered ending things. Considering everything else in the letter (eating disorder, depression, su*c*dal ideations), she didn’t react much. Years after that, she came to me asking how she can support one of the kids of a family friend. The kid went to mom first to come out to cus she was worried about how her parents would react (they ended up being supportive) and trusted my mom. My mom asked me cus she “wanted to do better”. I gave her advice and we had a good long talk with lots of crying. My mom now educates her Christian friends about what the Bible actually says, with translations and interpretations. She even cut off one penpal she’s had for years because they kept being homophobic and hateful. She’s said now she’ll be happy with whoever I end up with as long as they treat me right…and sometimes I feel like she’s holding back some jokes cus I’m Bi/Pan and still single 😂

Oh my gosh yes! Our general beliefs teach that we should be loving, and have other jesus-like traits, though your not expected to be perfect, just to be your best self, thats the whole reason why repentance exists in the first place.
It's the people who become overly obsessed that give us a bad rep. I promise it's ok to be gay or queer, we just don't want you to have gay sex or something, as love was meant to be between a man and a woman; but you definitely aren't going to hell for it.

Something my dad told me once was "A priest can describe every pebble in hell, but nothing past the pearly gates, so think about that when you blindly believe whatever people tell you." Hes not religious but we live in a pretty religious neighborhood, and I was quiet young at the time, but its still good advice. These kinds of nuts always rely on blind faith to get their way, and these unfortunate kids often received the brunt of it. I've seen it at my job as well. I work at a summer camp in-between academic years, and these kids would get relentlessly bullied. You could always tell too, as their parents force them to go to an outdoor summer camp in buttondown shirts and ties, sometimes even toting around a bible.

I do remember coming out as bi and demigirl to only a few people in high school because I was scared if it went around everywhere that my parents would find out and get me in gigantic trouble. Note that I did come out to my parents and older sister late into my junior year, and their first instinct was to try and 'snap me out of it' and 'convince' me that I'm a straight woman. So throughout those years I was in a constant cycle of coming in and out of the closet, trying to hide my queerness from my peers, and feeling very self-conscious, scared, and alone. I'm graduated now and fully out of the closet with my immediate family, but it took so long to feel okay coming to that conclusion.

Wow, I'm totally feeling these and it makes me wanna jump out of a window.
Everyday my parents kept treating me and my sister like sluts, because they were uncontrollable horndogs when they were our age. My sister told me this story where she went trick-or-treating in the neighbor next door with some classmates, and the moment my dad found out, he threatened to walk out on our family if she ever did that again. To this day, we don't understand his logic.
Despite how prude my parents were towards us, my mother, weirdly, always had a vulgar sense of humor, which I found off putting. I still find sex jokes gross and immature. Sometimes I don't know if I was born AroAce or guilted into it by their constant slut-shaming! By the time my sister and I reached adulthood, our parents patted themselves on the back for raising good, little Christian daughters, but wondered why we never had any boyfriends, got married, or had children past our mid-twenties. I'm a firm believer in "bad parents don't deserve the opportunity to be good grandparents" and my life goal has always been to die single and childless.
Before my dad died, I did get to fight them on what horrible parents they were, and how we haven't recovered from all their psychological damage, and his reaction was "So, your saying I stopped drinking for nothing?". Again, we don't understand his logic.

I know I’m not the first one to say, but these make me glad I was raised in a kind Catholic home, where God was a tool for helping to make life better, and not as a judgement parental figure that expects you to be perfect. Sure we were taught about Hell and all that, but we were told not to worry about that because God was way more forgiving than some people thought.

These people right here are why people avoid others who claim to be religious and it’s a shame tbh. Really there’s nothing wrong with being extremely religious, I’d actually much rather hang out with religious people most times because they seemed a lot nicer and at peace.
Religious people are supposed to follow the laws of their faith and insert it into their personality from what I’ve been told.
I don’t wanna go assuming things about the people mentioned in this video because idk them but it’s definitely strange.

... this makes me hate religion- No. the way people, MOSTLY PARENTS, ABUSE religion!! And the "rules" that some religions have... Such as women not being allowed to wear something normal but black cloaks (I forgot which religion), people claiming that LGBT is eeevil and a sin, people saying that your misfortune or bad mental health is your own fault because you didn't pray enough.
... I'm half religious. I was born Christian, I was baptized (is that the term when they do the water stuff?) but my family swears, we don't go to church. We barely pray.
I have gone through some dark times... praying didn't do shit for me so that's why I say that god is dead or doesn't exst.

nah bro because my dad is this hard-core Christian right, like Bible Thumper, hard-core, and growing up I never went out anywhere after my mom died when I was 7, and got separated from my siblings. After my mom lost her privilege's with me, my dad ALL OF A SUDDEN wants to take care of me. Keep in mind I was supposed to go with my grandma, and my dad said that he didnt want me to go with her because he didnt want me to end up "gay", because she is married to another woman. So back to the actual story, when I would go to school I was always wearing the same old clothes, and he wouldn't buy me anything, he claimed that I was a spoiled brat, but compared to my cousins and siblings living with my grandma I was FAR from spoiled, and he forced his religion onto me and I didnt know that he got it so far into my head , that I would do it to my older sisters, I am very disappointed in my younger self for doing what I did. That being said I didn't have any friends and was viewed as a freak. This went on for years and I am now a junior in high school, I am now what you would consider a "devil worshipper" according to my dad, just because of my drawings that I do. There are many other things but in order to say all of them, there would be a whole ass essay to be written. lmao and apparently I don't do shit with my life even though I got a job at 11(mind you is illegal) and know have my own car and I am now 16. And my dad didnt even make it through the first semester of freshman year in high school. So I made it further in life and school than he ever did. so he can kiss my "gay devil worshipping" ass.

Geez these people are what give religion a bad rep these days. My parents are also very religious but not to this extreme. They just just follow the customs of their religion which is Islam. Just praying daily and fasting during Ramadan. Well not my dad because he had diabetes. He would go to the mosque every Friday and my mom now wakes up early every day to pray the morning prayer. My mom would also fast the day before the Islamic new year.
They raised me to also pray and fast but they never made me do things I don’t want to do. I would wake up early to pray only during Ramadan cause my mom says it’s a good thing to do. I also just started fasting the day before the Islamic new year as well as my mom says doing that will bring you good luck. Please read all of this comment before you comment Thank you! Kids coming from this type of environment overcompensate and dive into the opposite end. They look for inclusion and a way to fit in, they end up doing what they never would have thought they would and end up regretting it. I have seen communities pray on these people first hand with people becoming red pilled incels, and some going to LGBTQ+ desperate to fit in and believing everything they see online about it, trapped in the circle of yes men going deeper and deeper. The one thing they have in common is that they regret being part of these communities that pray on the lost and looking for answers. All communities can be toxic, some more than others. Remember true friends and communities will be there for you and NOT force you to become what you are not. Non toxic communities won't form sub groups of sub groups based off of how committed you are or how much or little you believe. True friends won't ditch you just because you have different options on politics, or if your gay or trans. Build a base with good people, be open to new things but don't let it destroy your convictions.

I was raised Catholic, but I'm an agnostic now. My politics just don't mesh with the Catholic church. My personal views don't mesh with the Catholic church. I also had to go to the same church that the kids who bullied me went to. Its funny because religion once gave me a sense of peace and security, but put my bullies in the same place as me, my sense of peace shattered. I'm confirmed and everything, but the last time I went to mass was at a Christmas mass in 2005. I've been an agnostic since I was 20, and I only went to the important stuff. I haven't set foot in a church since 2015, which was my grandfather's funeral. Like I said, I only went to the important stuff- weddings, funerals, holidays- and even then, it reminds me of why I choose to be an agnostic.

If anyone in the church tells you that, they are wrong… still it is best to tread lightly when living in this fallen world. But living a life in relationship with God will give you a safe place… I am a Christian and do believe that Gay sex and being trans is not what God wants, but I do believe that it is ultimately between you and God on that one..

Not me but 2 distant cousins on my maternal side. He was raise by one of this. It sickened me because his religion were bloody sucking to his mother, and his mother devolved because of this. Is even worse because both are from different dads ... both dads literally died when they were kids (even was in the wedding of one of them). This distant aunt was best friend with my mother and her sisters, specially the one after rmy mother. Seen her devolving into a fanatic mess just hurt my mother, my aunt and even my great grandmother who was still alive at that point, all thanks to the religion who introduce the prick she marry long after. His kids hates her because of the a-hole who became their step-father and the religion they were in. He controls her money literally. Last time i heard was almost 11 years ago, both kids literally escape from their mother thanks to their grandmother (one of my great grandmother's sisters), who was guilty of introduce her that guy in the 1st place. My great grandma died in 2011 , her sister in 2016 if i don't mistake, and that distant aunt was never to be seen again.
The funny part is, i was raised catholic but i choose to be atheist, not because of hate, because i had good religious people who at least were understandable instead of nutsos (at least some relatives and other figures). My parents are still but they are just tired of going too. I'm all if people wanna exercise their religion as long as is nothing shove down the throat. HECK! my family became less and less religious after a while. Keep just the minimum as my parents still believe, specially my dad who believes in San Cayetano, the saint patron of work, since the 2 times he was unemploy, the 2 times he finds job not so long after. He still gives me new stamps, even if i don't believe, to conservate for "luck" in case i need work.
