It was obviously just supposed to mimic the things we're told to do these days that lack subtlety. We're told everywhere to wear a mask, told everywhere to vote, and nearly ever UA-camr begs their watchers to subscribe. It's propaganda, no two ways about it. I wouldn't necessarily call CineFix anti-science though, just inserting some relevant propaganda within a movie about propaganda. Most of the alien's messages within the movie aren't terrible, and to be sure, worse things have been commanded of people to people in the past. The crime of propaganda, even well-intentioned propaganda, is denying people the ability to choose for themselves and live free lives. If you want the movie's themes to still make sense and not sound like a hypocrite, you have to identify today's propaganda too and point out how they limit people's individual choices, even if it's for the best on a larger scale. You're not as smart as you think you are.
@@thebigdawgj Evidently not. You couldn't even come up with justification to your original comment beyond 'no u'. John Carpenter is one of the most underrated directors around. He tells amazing stories on a very low budget. They Live is one of my favorite sci-fi movies.
A classic, activism served the purpose of history and not the other way around. A skill that has been completely forgotten by entertainment these days.
I love this movie more with each viewing! I saw this in the theater when it first came out. The six minute fight scene, and the hokey soundtrack were my only complaints. Why didn't the late great Roddy Piper just tell the guy "Dude! Check out these badass sunglasses that someone threw out! You can have a pair if they fit. Try them on!" I apologize to everyone likes that scene, but it REALLY slowed down the pace and the hokey slow music added to that. With those two things changed, it would, in my opinion, be a better film. Don't get my wrong, I still love it and consider it one of the best ever made, but does anyone agree about the points I made?
I kinda felt the exact same way watching it, but upon reflection it's doing a lot of story work and is a multifaceted metaphor for the things that keep the poor and oppressed down. Frank is cynical and knows the system is rigged against him, but he still doesn't want to interrogate it too closely or fight against it because of sunk cost, fear, misdirected anger, etc. etc. It can be a long, exhausting, brutal fight to wake people up out of complacency and despair and the brawl symbolises that. Totally agree with you about the music, though. So plodding and repetitive.
Change this from 80s greed to how corporations, with the government, socially manipulate the masses (particularly IT companies), and this story is still relevant.
I was thinking the same thing, but from a different point of view. Or to put it this way: Those "at the top" have always wanted, well, wanted it all. They are the "greedy" folks who do indeed run the world. Always have, always will. And those in the middle? They haven't changed all that much, either. They still work, do the best they can, while being taxed, yeah, almost to death, to benefit both those at the top and then those at the bottom. So this is about those "at the bottom". Yeah, for a long time they were quite content to settle for "something for nothing". These days? That's funny. Those "at the bottom" are now demanding that they have the "right" to, well, anything and everything, all that both those in the "middle" and at the "top" have by either their simple power and greed or through the old-fashioned notion of "hard work". Those at the bottom don't care about any of that. They simply want it all! So re-do "They Live" today, here in 2020? You'd have to change the plot only to show that it would be the "poor" people, the "homeless," those in the "inner cities" who would be the ones killing our "heroes" in the sunglasses....
@@jackmorgan8931 This could be remade with different characters, updated issues with the whole illuminati angle, CGI wouldn't be out of place with drones and what-not. You can't replace the actors or classic lines, though. Would have to be a re-imagining like with Fury Road.
I bought the comic after I saw the film and noticed the resemblances between them. I didn't know about the short story that started it all. Thanks for posting this.
Part of the success has to be attributed to Carpenter recognizing Roddy Piper's acting limits and using them wisely. Piper also had a veteran crew to play off of which always helps. This movie scratches my old Twilight Zone/Outer Limits itch - in style.

It's unsettling how relevant this movie is, considering it applies even more now than it did then. I'd love to see how a modern remake of this movie would express it.
In typical Hollywood fashion, a remake would be the polar opposite. The hero would be non-binary or transitioning and the aliens would be far right extremists.

I used to think of this in an exact opposite manner when I first watched this in the theaters. What was once the Conservative mindset in the 80’s, is now those perpetuated by far left liberals. Taking both prospectives through the lenses of a non biased set of They Live glasses, it’s easy to see, that one can watch this movie, and have no doubt, it is referring to all the regular news networks, upper class liberals, and the lives they all seem to follow. I’ve always loved this move! It’s just crazy, how the meaning had completely flipped!
The rapid projection of sequential video images from an electronic display induces a trance-like state in the engrossed viewer during which deeper parts of the mind become more susceptible to suggestion. This process changes the neural network structure of the brain as artificial memory traces accumulate over time forming a strong drug-like dependence upon the medium for constant electronic stimulation producing a mind out of sync with nature and increasingly rewired for the frequency of the machine. Vibrating diaphragms and transient glowing screens repeatedly broadcast professional entertainers singing jingles and reading scripted dialogue in a carefully composed world of dramatized make-believe. The only difference is that They Live still works even if it is set in the '80; while Josie is already dated although the message is basically the same.

Loved this movie as a kid
Piper said that it was a documentary, scary stuff, but this is a amazing film
John Carpenter is one of the most underrated directors around. He tells amazing stories on a very low budget. They Live is one of my favorite sci-fi movies.
It took me decades to become aware of why I loved that film so much as a kid.
A classic, activism served the purpose of history and not the other way around. A skill that has been completely forgotten by entertainment these days.

I fucking love you guys for turning this whole thing into a get-out-and-vote plug. Seriously, thank you. 🤘
I was just on a They Live binge yesterday trying to find any content weird :0
I remember watching it in 1988 and looking past the cheese to the message. How true it rings in so many ways today.
I always liked this take on that ua-cam.com/video/TVwKjGbz60k/v-deo.html
Because the longest fight scene set to film is just... awesome and fun.
Don't know if it is still now, but the fight with Piper and Kieth David was one of the best fight scenes ever.
Change this from 80s greed to how corporations, with the government, socially manipulate the masses (particularly IT companies), and this story is still relevant.
I was thinking the same thing, but from a different point of view. Or to put it this way:
Those "at the top" have always wanted, well, wanted it all.

The magic of Carpenter is he doesn't make a complicated plot or characters but still weaves an insightful, thought-provoking tale. This film is a scathing attack on bad Government, or the NWO. People are enslaved to the system when it should be the people being served by it. The enemy (or Devil) is at the top of the pyramid and has an all-seeing eye on us. Surveillance technology at an all-time high. Not so far from this movie with its "paranoid" themes. "They're all about you, all around you!"

It's capitalism in the modern era that people should be worried about.
It is the same it has not changed the deregulation and tax cut and privatization made in the 70s - 90s were leading here that was the point of the movie

A world of corporate propaganda designed to promote, not just the brand names of consumer products, but also the way of life and mental attitude that maximises their consumption...
