Just researched the name Ionian Hetairoi, turns out "Ionian" is used to describe a member of the ancient greeks and "Hetairoi" is an elite cavalry in Macedonia and the first cavalry used in Europe by Alexander himself, meaning "companion cavalry." So, with these definitions, you could quite literally translate it into "Ionian Companions" or "Army of the King" if you like
@@archeus. Ionian is a mistranslation, although Ionians were an ancient greek tribe, Macedonians werent Ionians but Dorians as they spoke a Doric dialect. The word is aiónioi (αιώνιοι) pronounced as "eh o ni ee" but the english pronounce it as its written, hence the ionian. It means Eternal and adding Hetairoi (εταίροι - also mispronounced) which means companions or equal member of something we end up with Eternal Companions, or Eternal Cavalry as the Hetairoi were the macedonian elite cavalry that followed Alexander in his expedition and their most elite members were his bodyguard.

The craziest thing to me is that some of those people in his army may very well be powerful Servants themselves rivaling or surpassing Alexander. But they all come when their King and friend calls.
I find Fate Zero's Iskandar to be the best representation of Alexander the Great in pop culture. They perfectly captured his extravagance, his charisma, how he stood far above any standards to the ancients.
Eh... Iskandar is a bit of a whitewashed version though. You can say about the movie all you want, but Oliver Stone's version portrayed by Colin Farrel didn't shy away from showing him at his worst as well, a drunken impulsive murderous jerkass. The historical Alexander was undoubtedly charismatic, had a grand vision and gleefully embraced foreign cultures, but the dude also had some severe issues.
@@dschehutinefer5627 I absolutely loved Stone's Alexander, and Farell nailed the character imo. There's just a tiny bit missing that I found in Iskandar, that which truly made Alexander stand above all others.
@@praiza1481 Well, fair enough. Iskandar is truly written as a larger than life character. Amusingly enough, if they had drawn and written Iskandar more like his historical counterpart I guess they would have run into the trouble that he would look and act quite a bit too much like Fate's Gilgamesh.
@@dschehutinefer5627 Not sure about act though, he does appear way more humane in many ancient sources, like in Plutarch's account where he is depicted as playing ball with his friends while campaigning in Asia.
@@dschehutinefer5627 I just wanted to point out that the Grail can invoke a certain specific aspect of a person. An example is Gilgamesh:
In Fate/zero and Fate Stay Night the Gilgamesh invoked is the one before meeting Enkidu. He was an arrogant tyrant.
In Fate/Grand Order the Gilgamesh there is the one after the death of Enkidu. A benevolent and wise king.
So, the same case could be applied to Iskander. The aspect invoked was the charismatic and extravagant conqueror not the dunken impulve murderer.

Iskandar was hands down the most inspiring character Zero had on offer. The way he schooled Artoria on what it truly meant to be a king, to the moment he summoned his endless armies. He was a bro to Waver til the end. 🥲
Literally in any fate he is the only one that gave me major goosebumps when he does his speech and summon the endless army

Didn't remotely school Artoria lmao. Some real dumb people out there who think Artoria was flawed, but Britain was doomed no matter who was king and she knew that when she drew caliburn, but she did so anyways.
When you look at Fate's version of Gilgamesh and Iskandar(Alexander the Great) and compare them to their historical inspirations, You'll realize that their bodies were essentially swapped.

They address that in the show, iskandar basically says “they got it wrong but no biggy”

What I love about this guy is that he was the strongest and biggest and he was paired with the smallest and weakest of all the mages and taught that boy to stand tall on his own two feet.
Character development is hard sometimes but it was pulled off perfectly with these two
When your noble phantasm is an army of chads and your great acomplishment on the story is turning your virgin master into a chad.
He didn’t just turn him into a Chad, he made him give up on his own dreams for the grail to go onto become one of his retainers and make iskandars dreams his dreams through pure friendship, a guy who could have forced him to do anything with a few words and a seal. Waver was really the only winner in fate zero.

Iskandar is by far and away the best character in the series, at first you just think he’s this knuckleheaded loudmouth douche but slowly he starts showing his true self and earns every bodies respect from people who don’t like him like waver to people who don’t like anybody like gilgemesh to people he outright insulted to their face like Artoria to even the viewer and by the end you realize why all of those millions of people follow him to battle and why he earned the title of Alexander the Great, genius writing
I really like how instead of combining just "You are my King" and "Rule the Battlefield" as the title suggested, you went ahead and combined ALL the Iskander related themes, even the memorable yet difficult to find "The Stars are to Fall Down", which was only available in the special F/Z soundtrack released in 2017. Very well done!

Still my favorite to this day. Personality, charm, power, he had it all. Imagine if Waver came back and Iskandar became his servant again 😍 I'd bust 😫
Look up "The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II". Grown up Waver becomes a professor/detective at Clock Tower in Archibald El-Melloi's place (who's death he feels guilty for). Super cool look into Waver after the Grail War, the impact Iskander had on him,
and a look into mage society nothing else in Fate gives.

When islander uses his noble phantasm for the first time theres a flash cut and you can see adult waver among the soldiers, so in a way he was reunited
@@ikonta169 While, by design, they do look almost identical, you're likely looking at Eumenes of Cardia. He's was a real life commander under Alexander the Great (many of the unique looking characters in his Noble Phantasm were real people.)
Iskandar compares Zhuge Liang (who was summoned using Waver as a vessel, called a pseudo-servant) to him and wishes to see them compete in FGO, and another follower of Iskandar claims Waver wouldn't even do Eumenes justice in the Case Files novel.

Several years ago, I made a 10min mix that combined the different soundtracks and uploaded it onto youtube on a seperate channel. My goal was to make it as seamless as possible between the transitions because I had noticed how well the music in fate flow into one another so effortlessly. I wanted to honor the servant that I could see myself calling them a king. I wanted to honor his charge, and his journey. Recently, that youtube video got taken down, understandably, for copyright. I still have my download version on my phone, but I do most of my music listening on youtube, and I must say you did an exceptional job carrying the weight and the themes that underline Iskandar's feel that composor sought after. I love how you transitioned between things, and it was just refreshing to finally hear an even better vision of what I had once. I thought it was phenomenal.
One of the best anime characters of all time. This man was a true leader and an inspiration to so many, not only within the universe of fate but also within our harts. Reach for the dreams behind the horizon and never give up.
Please do "The Battle is to The Strong" next! :)

The theme for the king of Conquerors is really underappreciated as well, its really epic and it even appeared in another show during a feels train moment with waver. Every damn moment Iskandar was on screen was amazing! Personally I loved how when he found Casters “workshop” he told Weaver not to look. I let that Iskandar at that moment felt that Caster had to die not only to win the war but to stop that slaughter of innocents

The theme of a true king
A king is nothing without a kingdom
but a true king, is his kingdom and lives for and besides his people.
Also am I the only one who wishes Fate had done some norse figures like Ragnar Lothbrok? A 'True' berserker? As the term berserker comes form the norse. Imagine how cool a 'true' berserker could be, Ragnar Lothbrok would be one of the many Norse Heroic spirits with that status.
All other berserkers are mere immitations. Only the norse would hold the true meaning.
So basically the Berserker equivalent to what the Hassan-i-Sabbah are to Assassins ?
