When Vietnam was under the UN embargo, the US supported China to use the Pol Pot regime to turn Cambodia into an aggressive region. After killing thousands of Vietnamese people in the border areas, the Pol Pot government, with the support of the Chinese government, prepared for a major attack on South Vietnam. On the Vietnamese side, after going through two wars with France and the US, we were completely exhausted. We wanted to rest. No mother wanted to lose another child. But we were forced to act once again before the opponent. Vietnam attacked Pol Pot and invaded Cambodian territory. The UN and the US said Vietnam was an aggressor. In 1979, when the main force of Vietnam was fighting fiercely on Cambodian territory, the Chinese army with about 2 million soldiers invaded North Vietnam to attack. Vietnam was caught between two wars. I cannot believe we won both battlefields. Too many people sacrificed to maintain peace. @@TomHuynh-x9l Pol Pot was an idiot. He ended up fucking up Cambodia. And destroying much of Khmer culture. In terms of ethnostate, there was none, his ‘communist’ ideology was based on social Phnong primitivism, the Phnong are not ever Khmer, they are just one of many ethnic minorities of Cambodia. They are what you call Montagnards, and for centuries they have resisted Central Khmer authority. They are known for their resilience thus why during ancient times, the empire would have employed them as labourers and soldiers. Most Khmer Rouge units deployed to the Eastern Zones, and the Eastern frontiers bordering Vietnam were of ethnic minority composition. During Cambodia’s independence from France, and the subsequent reforms from a colonial to modern post colonial government. The Cambodian government would enact policies to deny citizenship status to ethnic Vietnamese, so we had 3 choices: being stateless or the better option of foregoing our Vietnamese ethnic identity and become Khmer, or integrate into the already established Chinese-Khmer culture. And during this time, another policy was enacted, the integration of Cambodia’s tribal ethnic minorities such as the Kuy, Jarai, Phnong etc, who have long resisted Khmer cultural hegemony.

Another ripple effects the Sino-Soviet rivalry during the height of the Cold War. When the US was sure to withdraw from Vietnam in 1975, China was greatly anxious that a reunified Vietnam would become a Soviet Ally, thus China felt that it was being encircled by the Soviet Union and its allies, India to the West, North Korea (although neutral during Sino-Soviet rivalry but would lean to the Russians cuz of the massive subsidies and defence aid it recieved from the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact Countries), and finally Vietnam in Southeast Asia which meant that the entire political influence of China would be highly restricted and Moscow would call the shots. To counter this Soviet influence the Chinese began to court the US, Japan and the West, even Mao was not opposed to the complete withdrawal of US troops from Vietnam, however the US President Nixon was determined to bring back the US troops from Vietnam and he had been elected on the promise of ending the Vietnam War. The Chinese played a gamble in Cambodia Pol Pot of Khmer Rouge came to power in 1975 and with that a reign of terror and infamous killing fields started in the country. The Vietnamese invaded Cambodia in 1978 and kicked out the Khmer Rouge from power, in 1979 China invades Vietnam to punish Vietnam for its actions in Cambodia. Nevertheless Kudos to the Vietnamese for ending the murderous regime of Pol Pot.
Vietnam and Viet cong being allies with the Khmer Rouge during the war in Indochina and until the mid seventies? Vietnam harbored and supported the Khmer rouge and helped overthrow the Kingdom of Cambodia during the Cambodian civil war. The North Vietnamese overran most of northeastern Cambodia by June 1970. The North Vietnamese invasion completely changed the course of the civil war. Cambodia's army was mauled, lands containing nearly half of the Cambodian population were conquered and handed over to the Khmer Rouge and North Vietnam now took an active role in supplying and training the Khmer Rouge. All of this resulted in the Cambodian government being greatly weakened and the insurgents multiplying several fold in size over the course of a few weeks. As noted in the official Vietnamese war history, "our troops helped our Cambodian friends to completely liberate five provinces with a total population of three million people... our troops also helped our Cambodian friends train cadre and expand their armed forces. In just two months the armed forces of our Cambodian allies grew from ten guerrilla teams to nine battalions and 80 companies of full-time troops with a total strength of 20,000 soldiers, plus hundreds of guerrilla squads and platoons in the villages." On the day the incursion was launched, the North Vietnamese launched an offensive (Campaign X) of its own against FANK forces at the request of the Khmer Rougeand in order to protect and expand their Base Areas and logistical system. By June, three months after the removal of Sihanouk, they had swept government forces from the entire northeastern third of the country. After defeating those forces, the North Vietnamese turned the newly won territories over to the local insurgents. The Khmer Rouge also established "liberated" areas in the south and the southwestern parts of the country, where they operated independently of the North Vietnamese. documents uncovered from the Soviet archives revealing that the North Vietnamese offensive in Cambodia in 1970 was launched at the explicit request of the Khmer Rouge following negotiations with Nuon Chea. It has also been argued that U.S. bombing was decisive in delaying a Khmer Rouge victory. Victory in Vietnam, the official war history of the People's Army of Vietnam, candidly states that the communist insurgency in Cambodia had already increased from "ten guerrilla teams" to several tens of thousands of fighters only two months after the North Vietnamese invasion in April 1970, as a direct result of the PAVN seizing 40% of the country, handing it over to the communist insurgents, and then actively supplying and training the insurgents. I noticed several comments expressing confusion about why some Cambodians appreciate Vietnam's intervention in Cambodia, while others, particularly the younger generation, do not. The root of this hatred dates back to ancient times. In short, they are bitter about the ancient history when what is now South Vietnam used to be part of the Angkor Empire (primarily inhabited by the Khmer people of present-day Cambodia). The ancient Vietnam was expanding South and taking over this land between the 12th and 18th centuries, 200+ years before the Pol Pot event. However this bitterness is hypocritical because: 1. The southern part of present-day Vietnam was originally not part of the Angkor Empire but belonged to the Champa Empire. The Angkor Empire conquered the Champa in the 11th-12th centuries. Therefore, for modern Cambodians to claim that the land was originally theirs and to be bitter about losing it to ancient Vietnam is super hypocritical. 2. Ancient Vietnam's southward expansion occurred many hundreds of years ago, yet the younger generation of Cambodians often misleadingly associates it with Vietnam's intervention during the Pol Pot regime, which was less than 50 years ago. Unwritten fact: Much of the hatred is fueled by political propaganda, controlled by the Chinese government, to maintain cultural and social conflict between Vietnam and Cambodia. China has always sought to establish Cambodia as a puppet government to exert more political pressure and control over Vietnam.
Thank you for understanding. The problems of those young people really make me sad, but I know there are still people out there who think differently and a more objective view. They saw their comrades fall, their blood and bones scattered everywhere, the rotting corpses of enemies lying across the forest, and skulls and bones piled high. They witnessed the barbaric atrocities committed against the innocent people of both Vietnam and Cambodia. The Vietnamese volunteer soldiers - they are heroes.
During the late 1970s, Vietnam faced significant challenges as it had to fight on two fronts simultaneously: The Southwestern Front (Border War with the Khmer Rouge): After Pol Pot took power in Cambodia in 1975, the Khmer Rouge launched a series of attacks on Vietnamese territory, massacring civilians and committing heinous atrocities. In response, to secure its borders, Vietnam launched a military campaign in late 1978, eventually toppling the Khmer Rouge regime in early 1979. Vietnam then maintained its military presence in Cambodia to support the new government, leading to international tensions, particularly with China and some Western countries. The Northern Front (Sino-Vietnamese War): Shortly after Vietnam overthrew the Khmer Rouge (an ally of China), China launched a brief border war in February 1979. This conflict was intended to "teach Vietnam a lesson," but it also aimed to reduce the pressure on the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. The war spread across a wide border area from Quang Ninh to Lai Chau. The Vietnamese People's Army fiercely resisted, forcing China to withdraw after about a month of fighting. However, tensions along the northern border persisted for several years afterward.
I wish that the Vietnamese army did not have to participate in this war because it caused too much loss of life, material and suffered from embargo. While other countries ignored the genocide of the Khmer Rouge, only Vietnam acted and was criticized and embargoed. After expelling the Khmer Rouge from Phnom Penh, if it were not for the help of China, the US and its allies, Thailand and some Southeast Asian countries, the Khmer Rouge would not have existed for so long and the Vietnamese army would not have had to fight for 10 years. It is infuriating that many years later, the crimes of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot were recognized and tried.
After Vietnam withdrew its troops from Cambodia, the United Nations forces(UNTAC) took over and ensured security in the area. Unfortunately, the number of prostitutes and the rate of HIV/AIDS infection increased significantly.
That's actually true. Back when the UN was there, everyone was whispering about the shady behavior going on. Now I almost never hear it. Its one of those dark realities that has been erased from history.
Everyone must have fear, but everyone must put it aside. because: "losing the country is the biggest fear". Fighting to protect territory and protect peace requires eliminating all other fears.

We do not care about communism or capitalism; we care about the independence and freedom of the Vietnamese people. Communism or capitalism is merely a tool for us to achieve that goal, and history will decide which tool we use. If the U.S. had not helped France return to reoccupy Vietnam, directly intervened in the war to divide Vietnam, but instead helped Vietnam rebuild the country, perhaps we would now be a capitalist nation. Our leader, Ho Chi Minh, wrote a letter to the U.S. president after 1945, but that letter was never read. And the Americans would never help us fight against French colonization. Only the Soviet Union and China supported us, so following communism was inevitable

@@TomHuynh-x9l

In the war with Pol Pot, Vietnam actually had better numbers and quality of equipment. The advantage here was that the Vietnamese army knew how to overwhelm and end Pol Pot's persistence quickly, perhaps because they understood the quagmire the United States had when fighting them.
However this bitterness is hypocritical because:
History is history, historical reality is one and only. Only human perception of history is diverse and multidimensional.

During the late 1970s, Vietnam faced significant challenges as it had to fight on two fronts simultaneously:
The Southwestern Front (Border War with the Khmer Rouge):
After Pol Pot took power in Cambodia in 1975, the Khmer Rouge launched a series of attacks on Vietnamese territory, massacring civilians and committing heinous atrocities. In response, to secure its borders, Vietnam launched a military campaign in late 1978, eventually toppling the Khmer Rouge regime in early 1979. Vietnam then maintained its military presence in Cambodia to support the new government, leading to international tensions, particularly with China and some Western countries.
The Northern Front (Sino-Vietnamese War):
Shortly after Vietnam overthrew the Khmer Rouge (an ally of China), China launched a brief border war in February 1979.

Vietnam was never meant to be a communist country until American leaders turned their back against them. I guess that’s the fate of the nation.
