Rachel, you CAN use sand! At first it'll look like a mess but it will settle down. I was at the beach the other day and did something similar. I let it settle for a bit and the sand went to the bottom :)

For the sand, I think you could use the water proof spray to not have that affect on the sand. Instead of making it murky.
