    Good question. The third column is the distance between the observation and the calculated average. The objective of calculating the standard deviation (or variance) is to minimize the distance between the mean each observation. If you have one observations that is 1 unit away from the mean you need another observation that is -1 distance from the mean. By definition - the distances will always add up to zero.
    Make sense?

    Amazing guide, ive understood what my stats teacher have taught me for the last 6 months in 5 mins, thanks of you. But i got a question; What would be the procedure if we are given a big number of samples (lets say 35 samples) is there a shorter way to do it, or do we have to do that same step for all 35 samples? Thank you, got stats test tomorrow >.

    • @woodchuk1
      @woodchuk1 4 роки тому

      kisolee Kisolee I know this is 5 years too late, but there is an alternate way for large data sets.
      1) Square each data value and add the resulting squares. Call this number A.
      2) Add all the data points together, square this sum, and divide the result by the sample size. Call the result B.
      3) A minus B is equivalent to the top part of the formula in this video. So (A - B) divided by n - 1 is the sample variance, and the square root of (A - B)/(n - 1) is the sample standard deviation.
      This certainly requires less calculation than having to calculate the sum of (Xi - Xbar)^2 for each data point.
      Just to demonstrate, (17^2 + 15^2 + 23^2 + 7^2 + 9^2 + 13^2) - ((17+15+23+7+9+13)^2/6) = 1342 - (84^2/6) = 166. Divide by (6-1) to get 33.2 as the variance, just as in the video.

    the question is,the test and is graded on the typical 0 to 100 scale. distribution is symmetric, has a median 56, and a range of 93. Estimate the standard deviation and justify your estimate.

    2) St ambulance report that the average time it takes to respond to an emergency call is 25 minute assume the variable is approximately normally distributed with a standard deviation is 4.5 minute.
    If 80 calls are randomly selected, approximately, how many calls will be responded to in less 15 minutes?

    I was looking for the meaning of the standard deviation, so here it is: it shows how far a value is from the mean on "average". BUT this is not calculated like the Average, just easier to picture it that way. So it is "standard deviation" instead of "average deviation"

    • @statisticsfun
      @statisticsfun  9 років тому

      Viktor Gyebrovszky Yes, standard deviation is a mislabeled idea. While the calculation is different the concept is the same.... taking the distance from the mean.
