I never learn statistics with english language until starting Master's degree, then soon I watched your videos I feel like you are the best teacher ever in statistics. I appreciate your work and every single video you did for us.
Thank GOD for you. A lot of instructors on here assume people remember how to do this stuff. I AM SO HAPPY that I found someone to take me step-by-step. God bless you and thanks :-D
i was taught a diff way to do this. I really like the way you solved this problem. That i will be using your method. Thank you so much for explaining!!
Oh my goodness! This was so helpful! Thanks so much! I have my first college exam tomorrow in Stats and was freaking out because I didn't understand standard deviation! Sir, you deserve an award!
Very cool. You may want to double check your link in your video description. I have noticed that UA-cam often truncates links if the video description is edited.
Good question. The third column is the distance between the observation and the calculated average. The objective of calculating the standard deviation (or variance) is to minimize the distance between the mean each observation. If you have one observations that is 1 unit away from the mean you need another observation that is -1 distance from the mean. By definition - the distances will always add up to zero. Make sense?
Thank you so much for your very easy to understand video. I swear youtube teachers like you save me from really struggling through my online statistics class at BYU.
You are welcome! Good luck in your classes. Make sure you like MyBookSucks on FaceBook (see link in video description). This will help others find the educational videos.
You are very welcome and good luck in your class too! Make sure you like MyBookSucks on FaceBook (see link in video description). This will help others find the educational videos.
Thank you very much! My teacher doesn't break the information down in a chart so it was rather confusing. I'm definitely able to understand and retain this information better!
Wow! Thank you so much for that. Make sure you like MyBookSucks on Facebook (see link in video description). This will help others find the educational videos.
Amazing guide, ive understood what my stats teacher have taught me for the last 6 months in 5 mins, thanks of you. But i got a question; What would be the procedure if we are given a big number of samples (lets say 35 samples) is there a shorter way to do it, or do we have to do that same step for all 35 samples? Thank you, got stats test tomorrow >.
kisolee Kisolee I know this is 5 years too late, but there is an alternate way for large data sets. 1) Square each data value and add the resulting squares. Call this number A. 2) Add all the data points together, square this sum, and divide the result by the sample size. Call the result B. 3) A minus B is equivalent to the top part of the formula in this video. So (A - B) divided by n - 1 is the sample variance, and the square root of (A - B)/(n - 1) is the sample standard deviation. This certainly requires less calculation than having to calculate the sum of (Xi - Xbar)^2 for each data point. Just to demonstrate, (17^2 + 15^2 + 23^2 + 7^2 + 9^2 + 13^2) - ((17+15+23+7+9+13)^2/6) = 1342 - (84^2/6) = 166. Divide by (6-1) to get 33.2 as the variance, just as in the video.
the question is,the test and is graded on the typical 0 to 100 scale. distribution is symmetric, has a median 56, and a range of 93. Estimate the standard deviation and justify your estimate. thanks
Absolutely brilliant, so very useful but what i want in order to help me understand this is 'why'? In other words I need to understand why the formula is what it is, I need to understand the concept behind the maths. Could you direct me to a suitale tutorial please?
2) St ambulance report that the average time it takes to respond to an emergency call is 25 minute assume the variable is approximately normally distributed with a standard deviation is 4.5 minute. If 80 calls are randomly selected, approximately, how many calls will be responded to in less 15 minutes? Solution;
adalcy quintin You are welcome! If you get a chance like MyBookSucks Facebook page (www.Facebook.Com/PartyMoreStudyLess). This will help others find my videos.
I was looking for the meaning of the standard deviation, so here it is: it shows how far a value is from the mean on "average". BUT this is not calculated like the Average, just easier to picture it that way. So it is "standard deviation" instead of "average deviation"
Viktor Gyebrovszky Yes, standard deviation is a mislabeled idea. While the calculation is different the concept is the same.... taking the distance from the mean.
Pls can you kindly take an example from a survey and relate it to the calculation of Standard deviation? I think that will really clarify some of the doubts I have about it.
Thank you so much for your lesson !! ... but i have important question ! why its MUST To be zero ? what IF i add them and were not Zero .... what should i do in this case ?? please answer me as soon as possible i have quiz tomorrow ...... Thank you and appreciate your help !!

Thanks for the question. The 6 is the number of observations (n).

Wow. Please post anything you want. I'll watch it, even if its not my course to learn.
Currently in Algebra 1, in 7th grade. This videos are so helpful. You are the best teacher on UA-cam, and your videos are very professional

Voice volume is very low in this vid. Headphones are almost required!!!
This just taught me better than a 50 minute lecture did. THANK YOU LIFESAVER!
This is hands down the best video I've seen on the subject. Very well explained and beautifully presented. Thank you very much!
This was the best! Perfect Explanation! The only difference between your formula and my tutors formula is that you have n-1 while my tutor just has n
