Kyle, this has to be the single most in depth video on APRS I’ve found on UA-cam yet. I’ve watched tons of videos getting little bits and pieces of APRS capabilities and I still learned more from this one video. Thank you for sharing! It was a huge help!

Thanks Matt. Glad you stuck through the video. When I was presenting this video, about 95% of the attendees' were fast asleep!!!! LOL

This is what Al gore really said:Former Vice President Al Gore is frequently quoted as claiming credit for the invention of the internet, but what he actually said in a 1999 CNN interview was “I took the initiative in creating the internet.” Gore was widely mocked for this statement. But the men who did invent the internet, TCP/IP designers Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf, wrote in Gore’s defense in 2000. They argue that Gore was “the first political leader to recognize the importance of the internet and to promote and support its development.”

So god damn confusing. This is why you see 6 msgs on aprs.fi when mobile stations send in dense areas. Two or more digipeaters hear the original msg, and send it to the internet, and repeat it, and two more digipeaters hear the high repeater, and repeat the process. I've seen a single msg, especially over the ISS, pop up 6 to 10 times in a row milliseconds apart on aprs.fi

Aprs is a confusing protocol. Hopefully this video cleared some of it up.

@@AA0Z I still don't understand why only two HTs (kenwood $600, and yaesu ft3dr $400) allow users to set path, send msgs, beacon gps. Seems like all these people are just position reporting, because %99 of the manufacturers are only including the ability to position beacon. In reality, the system would be so much better if everyone knew msging was possible. The DMR networks (brandmeister) seem to be implementing the whole thing much better. If your doing digital aprs via DMR, you already have the ability to msg too via a formatted DMR text, and nothing requires a path, because it goes straight into the aprs network, and seeks out the callsign you put in at the last place they were heard. I've tested it with non gps DMR radios too, and my buddy can send me a msg, and it pops up on my HT straight from the last DMR repeater I keyed up. Works perfectly.

@@paaao Probably comes down to software research and how much the manufacturer wants to spend on developing that function. Many factors on why they don't include that function...who knows???

As of 6/24 the use of the codes in my area is a cluster fuk. There is a mish-mash of icons and SSID's!!!
Makes APRS less useful than it could be.
