- You are watching me replace my Kidde / Firex / Nighthawk Smoke Alarm System (Model#'s KN-COSM-IB and i4618 ) with First Alert / BRK SC7010B and 9120B units.

I agree with you that the sc7010b is better than the Kidde unit due to its photoelectric sensor. But I recommend the sc7010bv as even better. For two reasons- the voice will tell you what the beeping is for. This is because not everyone understands the difference between 3 beeps and 4 beeps. And secondly because it will tell you the ppm of co when it alerts. In my house I used 7020b in the bedrooms instead of the ionization version. My research found that the photoelectric type is best in all locations.
I only use the first alert alarms. Kidde has had quality issues like you brought up. Also Kidde is currently having a massive recall for their fire extinguishers. I was able to contact Kidde on line and they are going to replace my kitchen extinguisher for free. Your helper is very good!
I am very partial to and would like to use Honeywell alarms if I could get them but I think they exited the residential market in the U.S. a while ago. I didn't really know Kidde was having quality issues, thanks for letting me know. I have one of their extinguishers and will check it out to see if it is covered under the recall. I really ought to be more up on this stuff as I sort of work in the fire protection industry!

I have all 9120B's in my house with Kidde 7CO CO Detector
Edit (2 years later) I replaced all of my 9120B’s with the Kidde i12010SCO.
Good to keep that kind of equipment up to date.

In my house i also went from kidde smoke only alarms to all smoke and co alarms from first alert

It depends on what you have now and how old it is...

Most smoke alarms use both ionization and photo detection for a more less false alarm
Can you simply use the battery and rely on the battery's power?
You'll have to look at the manual on line to verify but I think they will work without the wire. I'm pretty sure that they won't "talk" to each other if you don't have them connected via wire.
In other words, if one goes off it won't signal the others to go into alarm unless the wires are connected

Why didn’t you just use wire adapter between Kidde and BRK detectors . That would have saved you a lot trouble and time.
It's not that hard to change the pigtail and its really the right way to do the install.
