If you think his accent is thick, try talking to someone from Newfoundland. They not only run all their words together at a rapid fire pace, but they use colloquialisms unique to the town or village they live in. It took me a long time to get the hang of their dialect when I lived there back in the 60s.

Just a reply to that. It's not for me and doesn't seem to be for many other non-native speakers, judging by the comments. I think some people just have a better ear for this stuff, both in their native language and in foreign languages. And, hence the reference to Trainspotting, it also in large parts depends on how the person enunciates and how much slang they use. This is kind of the ideal starter Scottish accent to be exposed to - authentic, but learner-friendly.

His brogue goes down much easier when using a headphone. I understood every word and I'm Flemish/Dutch speaking with no English schooling but from movies and pop music. I do have 60 years of listening and watching experience.
He's speaking slowly enough that the accent isn't really an issue. It's when the delivery gets ramped up to conversational speed for me with Scott's that english turns into a foreign language. 🤣
