Des Grieux's solo from the first scene of Kenneth Macmillan's Manon, recorded c.1980. Anthony Dowell seems to 'speak' with his whole body when he dances this piece.
Dowell and Sibley were the original Manon and Des Grieux. I fell in love with this ballet--and them. It remains my favorite ballet, to this day. I was 13, when I saw it premiered in 1974 at the Kennedy Center in DC--and I probably started ballet class the next week. lol. Dowell became my role model. He made dancing look so effortless and simple, yet it wasn't. He was a great actor and partner, too.
He is the one and only. There is a multitude of dancers who can dance this role brilliantly, but there is only one Anthony Dowell.
Absolutely. Still today, nobody compares to Anthony Dowell's beauty.
even Dowell's fingertips are perfect and expressive in this gorgeous adagio. I swoon.

WOW. Such timing and musicality and passion. Truly moving and beautiful. Today's dancers should study this.
Yes men, take note of this advice from a wise teacher.

I adore Anthony Dowell - he's wonderful and especially in this difficult solo that he makes look so easy. thank you for posting this.
Every dancer who has performed that solo since has regretted how good Dowell's technique, especially in adagio movement, was!!
