Exactly my technique, all my organization relies on metadata. Once you discribe your photos you can do whatever you nee.

David, I've been using Lightroom since beta in 2006 and teaching it since 2011 and appreciate your clear, straight-forward approach. You're right: organize folders chronologically; and put your better stuff in Collections. I emphasize that Adobe (italics) wants (end italics) you to put your better stuff in Collections since Folders are unavailable in other modules. I thought that strange at first, but now understand and support their logic. And yes, there's a lot of boneheaded advice out there too.

Thank you for the positive feedback on the new tutorial and my organizational system. I started teaching Lightroom when it was still a beta product back in 2006 at a photography school.
I have watched thousands of users try and try to build their own folder structure using words and themes. Almost every attempt eventually went bad. The idea was correct- to organize by memorable things, by names of places and things-but File Folders was the wrong tool.
I think that Adobe learned this lesson too eventually which is why the user has no control over their folder names, if they can even see them, in more recent products like the cloud-based version of Adobe Lightroom.
For the Classic user though, Collections are one of the greatest "secrets" that can make working in any Module, and keep track of your favorite photos, so much easier!
