That was Sounds, a show broadcast on Saturday afternoons in Australia. Donnie Sutherland was a local DJ but hosted the SU show from the 70s to the 80s. It was always worth putting on as they did stray from the top 40 and he was a good presence to see. Find, if you can, his similar interview with John Cooper Clarke from around the same time.
Donnie Sutherland had his own pop sinlgle hit. So he understood what it took. Unfortunately he also lost his brother at an early age as well which kept him grounded.
Master Bates All great bands, but in the grand scheme of things...only Joy Division were at the same level as The Fall. And I’m saying this as a massive fan of all those bands.
One of them.to be fair..John copper Clark is my fav tho makes me laugh about more ..but love the fall and find mark funny as .people find him scary in the music world .it was too easy to shock .he loved that. Played up to it big Time..he ain't no different to old school guys ya meet in pubs and on building sites .there is always a small guy with a tounge of venom ..and damn he is funny .one of a kind in the music business. We need more of this again ..think for ya selfs .and be honest. That is what I have always taken from mark .and dont give a fk
The interviewer is great, I have seen him before, when you clock him you fear the worst but not that bad at all and seems to have knowledge of his subjects.
Mad Cyril He makes it about them and isn't asking redundant questions (like influences on why them formed) But asks them what they are doing with their success...he is a phenomenal interviewer I have seen so far.
Donnie Sutherland is such a cool interviewer. You can see they totally warm to him in the end despite the nervousness because he's such a no-bullshit genuine fella.
must admit at first glance i made the mistake of thinking this was going to be a cheesy interview.....but the reviewer is fantastic....complementary, says sorry at one point for speaking over Mark E smith....and is just nice and honest....and it looks like both the Marks seem alright with him by the end of the interview......great footage.
+Ady Cardiac I've come across this guy before and he is absolutely great isn't he? Just perfect for me. Although at first look you think it's going to be cheesey.
Donnie Sutherland your welcome....is this actually Donnie or just someone representing him?....as i have heard that Donnies health has not been too great.
Considering what happened the night before I think that this interview is well conducted by all involved! - Marc and Mark had a set-to and it had ended with Riley punching Smith.
The Pop Chart TV shows of Australia, from 1970-90, were amazingly accepting of the most avant garde and l'etranger groups around, a breadth of acceptance beyond down under.
Thanks for uploading- "Live at the Family Inn" ...sounds great... Strange to see Mark disarmed by niceness & the prospect of hearing 'container driver' followed by the Divynals
Donnie you did great service to music. Thank you for your influence on me. I still enjoy music your brought to my attention these many decades latter. I award you a koala stamp.
"We don't even know what we're going to do after this" - Mark E. Smith still angry from the night before, pondering whether to kick Marc out of the band or possibly split up the band right there.
Yeah that actually was one of the best interviews I've seen. You look at the interviewer and the Fall and you think they just ain't gonna connect. But hey presto; never seen Mark E look so chuffed.
Marc Riley... night before the interview he punched Mark E Smith in the eye, gave him a shiner (only slightly visible in this footage) and was consequently thrown out of the band.
They were playing later at 'The Family Inn'..Not that I eve been there especially since it was too far from my home, but now that I live in another state, I checked Google to see if that place was still operating, and it was...
Smith's mind had obviously gone to pittle by the time of his interview/autobiography. He reckons it was Deep Purple they were dancing to. That whole book reads like the memoirs of Aldridge Prior from Viz. Half remembered but hilarious bollocks. That book is brilliant. It's the comprehensive 'man down the pub' simulator. Buy some Lidl beer and kick back.
@@ennbee2051 Think so. Some good bits. The Edinburgh years sound like he was happy as. His acrimony towards ex members is phenomenal. The American lads he worked with probably knew not to hang around too long.
Remember when people used to slag off Donnie Sutherland and call him a wanker and yet here is on prime time commercial TV interveiwing a relatively unknown punk band. Doing a pretty good job as well. People are clowns.
I've been reading Steven Hanleys (bass) book on The Fall: a night or two before this the band were falling asleep on stage due to being knackered after the flight to Oz and played a shit set, then found their energy again and started dancing to Rock the Casbah in the nightclub after-party, which prompted Smith to start slapping them around and which, in turn, drives Riley to lamp Smith in the face and give him a shiny nice black eye. Then they have to do this interview...
well I've just read mark e smith biography called "renegade". He stated that they went to a terrible heavy metal after party and started playing smoke on the water, Riley started dancing to it and they were taking the piss out of him and laughing. He went over and said "get off the fucking dance floor" and grabbing hold of him. He then hit him in the face in the middle of the disco. Amusing how differently they have put it.
+Gromit Pesley Renegade is a good laugh. It's like transcriptions from pub conversations with Mark E Smith trying to remember exactly what went down and following loads of tangents along the way, which is pretty much how I reckon the ghost writer had to put the book together.
What is this, August 12th or 13th? The shows after this in New Zealand are the Fall at the height of their powers. We're lucky to have this bit of video, thank you for uploading.
Is this the interview where Marc had given Mark a black eye the night before? It's hard to tell with MES but he looks like he might have a shiner on his left eye.
As I speak , late 2017 , Mark is ill , how is Donnie ? I ask because this is a great interview , and I know that Donnie has won some awards for his journalism !
@nath909 sorry, I know I come from the land of borrowed-culture, but is Mark Riley suggesting with that gesture that he's a homosexual and likes Donnie?
Just been listening to a podcast featuring Marc, he tells the story that the night before this interview, he and Mark had been involved in a scuffle. Mark objected to the rest of the band dancing to The Clash in a nightclub, walked over and gave them all a slap. Riley reacted by punching him in the face and giving him a black eye. He was kicked out of the band a couple of months later.
+Darren Saunders yeah I listened to that podcast, Adam Buxton. Marc said he earned more money on the dole than he did being a roadie for the fall. He also said that Mark E Smith liked to intimidate and hit band members as they wouldn't hit him back. Well done Marc, ugly little runt got what he deserved
Marc Riley looks like he's in the headmasters office with his dad....
He sure does
I bet his balls haven't dropped at the this point.
The hapless boy Lard.
Marc Riley had punched him in the face the night before. Thats why smith has a black eye.
Gerry Berry really? Tell me more...
Marc Riley probably the best radio DJ still going today.
RIP MES.
Totally
What a genuinely great interviwer. Such a lack of his own self importance. Something many presenters forget.

rest in peace to the greatest thing manchester has ever produced.
+Michael Robenalt What you on about - the original line up of New Order are all still alive.
You forgot Joy Division, The Chameleons, Happy Mondays, New Order, The Stone Roses and The Smiths?
Master Bates All great bands, but in the grand scheme of things...only Joy Division were at the same level as The Fall. And I’m saying this as a massive fan of all those bands.
Mark E Smith was the only punk to keep to what was real . Noone came close

saw The Fall during the Hex InDuction Tour was awesome
The tension is palpable...

rip Mark E Smith, another one like you will never be found. Respect due.
Donnie Sutherland is such a cool interviewer. You can see they totally warm to him in the end despite the nervousness because he's such a no-bullshit genuine fella.
May Mark E Smith soul be resting in eternal peace in heaven and still writing and playing his rocking soings
Last time Mark drank water....
"Fish fuck in it." - WC FIELDS
... can you be certain it’s water?
It's Gin.
Ask Shane MacGowan - pretty sure he knows!

Countdown wasn't. Sounds. That 's because Donnie is intelligent and respectful whereas Molly was only interested in the big acts.
Donnie, Interviewing "the Fall", what a dude! Gold!

Getting a contact hangover watching this.
A blast from the past.
Same tour that 'Fall In A Hole' was recorded in NZ (by Sir Chris Knox) ?
I love this interview so much

The background music is nice.

Oh how I miss him...
That was so sweet
I saw them in 2010 - FANTASTIC!
Smiths face looks like someone's set fire to it and then tried to put the flames out with a golf shoe.
Yeah but Marc Riley had punched him in the face the night before. You can see the shadow, so not a black shiner
Donnie was fantastic.
"The fall - Lovely blokes!" haha
lol

The man who's head changed shape.
David Dickinson hasn’t aged at all since then - (MES = my hero)❤
Donnie has an interview on youtube with JCC and INXS are there too.
Marc was fired after this tour.

I just finished reading that part last night. It makes for some good visuals.
Marc Riley, he has a joker-hysterical face
It’s the Boy Lard! Oooh my life!
Donnie is great. Watch his interview with JCC - he truly loves his guests it seems. MES looks fuct here - ha, those were the days.....
he was and still is.

mind blowing footage. Wow. That tank-top he looks like a northern computer geek
MES seemed to cheer up and mellow out an awful lot later in life. I guess most people do.
Has Donnie ever been on Marc Riley's "Who's On My T Shirt"?
@YouGotWoodRolled Just look up their discography, they released like three albums in '82 (one a live one), one in '81, 2 in '80 and 2 in '79.
RIP Mark.
Proud to say I have never heard Jeff Beck and don't want to. And now I'm quite old. I know OF him and I feel that, that's enough.
Good to see Dr. Bruce Banner branching out into other career opportunities.

Do you all sing along to the jingles too? ;)
How am I only just discovering lard was in the fall?
All Mark e Smith's band members looked terrified in interviews including his wife! Not a secret that he was a bit of a tyrant.
They are always different, they are always the same..

did the Fall tour Oz again i 1983?
not till 1990
ace interview, happy chappy the radio presenter, MES black eye must've been a good one for Make Up not able to cover it up?

Did Riley get a half day from school, the fuckin state of him ,why dosent he fuckin speak?
As a previous consumer, I would say coke or amphetamine.
He also seems a little tense, to say the least.. I think he is _Totally wired_ ;)
Why does Mark always rub his nose? Is it a speed thing or does he just have an itchy nose (all the time)
Has MES a got an impacted orbital bone there?
the little pipsqueak looks older than me now.. ha ha ha, now look who's laughing.
Was never in the gang and never pretended to be either, RIP plastic man
