@High Times That’s every race and nationality of people in that struggle brother, of course they’re not going to show the downside. This video isn’t about that, that’s a whole separate discussion.
Those Puertoricans who arrived in New York in the 40s were received with racism..not speaking the english language they were called spicks by others like italians and irish.. all they could say in english was No Spick inglish...however we learned fast and fought back..each nationality kept to themselves..the NYC blocks were divided by races each group kept to their area or if violated then fights would break out..blacks too had their areas. Those early arrivals were more humble and not educated Puertoricans the main reason why many who were born or raised in NY do not know much about their Puertorican heritage and are misinformed and misinterpret and dont understand their culture. Fortunately Puertorricans are a small but strong culture and slowly but surely have instilled a strong bond with our island and heritage and no one will ever be able to change or break that bond.
Speak for yourself buddy but my parents came to New York in the 1940s and being born and raised in New York we were steeped in Puerto Rican culture and traditions and spoke Spanish in the house and the streets and we also visited the island twice a year every year and given the fact that we lived in Chelsea which at the time was a Irish Neighborhood with Puerto Ricans living in only selected blocks. Not all Puerto Ricans lived in East Harlem or the Lower east side.!!! And not all Puerto Ricans danced Salsa or Bomba or reggaton, we were from Jibaro people in the central mountains of Puerto Rico.
my great grandmother moved to spanish harlem in the 60s and so did a bunch of moved from puerto rico and my grandma grew up in spanish harlem and my dad and I grew up in the bronx moving to nj been mad years in nyc
I was born in Manhattan in 1946. That makes me an authentic Neorican , and very proud to be Puerto Rican. I majored in Puerto Rican Studies (not offered anymore) at CUNY during the early 1970s. It was my process of personal decolonialization. Later, I taught Puerto Rican history at the college level in CUNY. Today, I'm very prepared to deal with Puerto Rico's socio/economic/political problems in a very analytical and intelligent fashion. I was visiting the LES during the late 40s to party at Uncle Miguel's and Tia Olimpia's home on East 2nd Street. That makes me an original in Manhattan's Lower East Side also.!!!!!! QUE VIVA PUERTO RICO LIBRE !!!!!
Representing Puerto Rican culture as PRIMARILY something, other than European has become an obsessive effort to mislead. Such an effort to mislead is characteristic of New Yoricans who primarily identify as Afro Americans culturally and racially, and so strive to describe Puerto Rican culture as being primarily West African. In that very cunningly deceptive way, the predominantly African-Americanized Newyoricans, can feel more culturally comfortable. Otherwise, they would tend to feel totally alienated from the part of themselves that totally contradicts their adopted self-image.
Beautiful comment. 1st gen PR here and it's sooooooo difficult around many ppls here. Looks can be deceiving. Many whites think I am some kind of mix between white and black, other Spanish speakers are surprised that I come from my own Spanish speaking culture annndddddd.... [since this is America] Americans really try to make me choose sides in their race war against each other[blackvswhite]. Puerto Ricans are not African Americans or white!! We are primarily just Borinquens no matter what we look like and Taino proud.
I would go a step further to say that we are mostly European culturally. Many dont know about southern Spain. We are a combination of Andalusian and Canarian Spaniards mostly even in the way we speak. African and taino culture is super important to us and most people have some mix but I think that has become black washing in the USA. Up until the U.S annexed P.R from Spain it was almost identical to Cuba’s population but because the US agreed not to colonize Cuba the two went their separate ways and here we are with no idea or interest in our truth.

Puerto Rico is not a US territory is a colony of the United States. The United Nations have issued over 40 resolutions telling the United States to grant independence to Puerto Rico immediately and the US has ignored all of them. So much for democracy and gratitude, for Puerto Rico helping the United States get their independence. American citizenship was also imposed and thousands of Puerto Ricans have paid with their blood for a forced citizenship.
What happen to us it's not the same and we don't help each support each other any more we have to go back to what we were and then we ask why everyone else grows and we don't we owned the stores we owed and fought alot I Guess they say hard times make strong man and good times make weak man we are down and I am Puerto Rican we have to wake up sister and brother look were you come from we are family ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
1st riot in Harlem where Black owned business thrived was by a Puerto Rican boy who stole a pen knife. The catalyat had ramifications for the next 50 years as racial tensions were increased. Changing the peaceful racial co exstience that had been established during the Harlem Renasaince
I was born in New York City's Harlem Hospital in 1955 and I grew up in East Harlem. I am proud to be an Afro Nuyorican with roots in Santurce, Puerto Rico. I left New York City in the early 70's to attended HBCU's Howard University in Washington, DC. I later went on to attend graduate school at Georgetown University. I am Boricua all day everyday and I have never forgotten my Puerto Rican roots. However, I wish more Puerto Ricans moved to Washington, DC because we have mostly Salvadorans/Central Americans here. I cannot relate to the Salvadoran culture and many of them are racist and ignorant towards Afro Latinos. If you're Black and speak Spanish, many Salvadorans/Central Americans look at you as if you're from another planet. 😀 😃 😄 😁Philadelphia has a large Boricua population.
Why would you go to a HBCU its for American Blacks. Afro Latinos have nothing in common with American Black history or culture. You have a diffrent and distinct story. Also most Puerto Ricans are very xenophobic and racist themselves. Racist against Caucasians and actual racism on the Island. They also think they are better than other Latinos/Hispanics cause of there citzenship. Have you ever seen a Puerto Rican raise the American Flag? Or Fly it? Why are Mainland Puerto Ricans fairing so poorly compared to other groups when they have more oppurtunity then others?
Harlem used to be Black and Italian. Before Puerto Ricans moves in. Most do not know the true history of Harlem and what de gentrification and subsidized housing did to Harlem.. It was ruined.
PUERTO RICO NEEDS TO BECOME INDEPENDENT!!!! IF WE BECOME A STATE WE WILL CONTINUE TO LOSE CULTURE AND MORE WEALTHY PEOPLE WILL CONTINUE TO BUY OUR LANDS AND OWN OUR ANCESTRIAL HOMES!!!! SAY NO TO STATEHOOD!!!!

Great I think that Virginia Beach Virginia would be better fitting as a main go to area for Puerto Ricans And Dominicans then New York City New York yeah it is closer to the island and feels more like the climate and temperature too yeah
