Without a wife and kids, I am happy to live a minimalist's life. Small apartment, not many possessions, almost everything is paid for, got very little debt. If I had a family - even a good one - I'd be saddled financially even if I made more money. Since I get paid by the total amount of hours worked, I am gradually reducing my weekly hours and enjoying some free time as I grow older. I work only 36 hours per week and in the next year or two I will make it 30 hours. Got a little investment portfolio too. Nothing too big or impressive since I prioritize cutting work before growing money but the money still grows in frugal hands. I am quite happy with my life, works for me.
The only hobby I have is playing chess which is not an expensive hobby at all. I may travel here and there once every other year but if I have time off I'd stay home most of the time because I am happy with what I have. Peace & Quiet.
Just as I imagined it, really looking forward to that too.

My gf of 20 years and I have own transaction account (for my own spending and my bills etc), savings account (with money I save aside for rain6 day or treating myself or my gf and a joint savings account (both must sign to withdraw funds) for our utilities, joint bills, holidays etc) and I pay for groceries, car maintenance etc.

Don't know what it's like in the States, but here in Europe (Belgium, France, Germany...) it's impossible for an average couple to survive on one income - more so even if you have children. The economic reality is geared towards two-income housholds.
My attitude is make them work. If they divorce, they have their own money/retirement, and shared custody (no child support). With the extra money you can put the kids in a decent private school. It takes a lot of commitment from the man, but it is a good insurance policy.
