    Dart frogs, also known as poison arrow frogs, are very misunderstood. They are actually NOT poisonous and are easier to care for than a goldfish. A properly setup vivarium (which is easy to do) is like having a saltwater reef aquarium with 1/4 of the cost and none of the work or maintenance. This video outlines basic dart frog care tips and the different types of dart frogs.

    Been wanting Dart Frogs for a long time...I just travel for work too much...2-3days at a time. it gets hot where I live, don't like leaving the AC on when I'm gone so not regulating outside Vivarium temp would be difficult, plus feeding etc. Plus I get power outages a little too common.Guess I'll just keep away from taking the risk.

      There are ways for someone in your situation to keep darts but it's going to require more of an investment for you than others. There is plenty of automated equipment, small cooling systems, and power back ups available but yes, they cost money.
      I know a hobbyist that also travels for work and has every aspect of keeping frogs automated. His system can even notify him by email or text message if there's a problem such as temps out of range or power outages. He has a friend that he can call who can check on his frogs if he receives such a notification.
      It really depends on planning and what you are willing to spend.

      Thanks for the info. I figured where there is a will there is a way, especially with automated environmental control units, Aux Pwr, Batt Backup, accessories available. I may change my employment in the next 3-4months where I'll be home daily like a normal person so going to wait and see.

    Hi there, I love these frogs so much. They look awesome! I have 1 question, what is a recommended size for a pair of Azureus'? I'm planning on getting 3 or 4 eventually (When they breed). I have looked online but it's just not clear D:

    • @Ali-mj2gm
      @Ali-mj2gm 7 років тому

      Wes Jellema minimal size for a pair of Azerus would be a 20 gallon to be truly comfortable. It may even be a 10 gallon but your springtail and isopod culture better be large to keep up with more waste from a pair of Azerus in a tank that size. Overall a 20 gallon is better to avoid any errors.

      It's not recommended.
      Usually, the environmental requirements between darts and other herps or reps vary too widely to make multi-species vivariums practical.
      Also, feeding and territory will present other issues.
      Best to keep vivs with a single breed of darts.

    • @vermillion2083
      @vermillion2083 5 років тому +11

      Its my understanding that it's not whether they are captive breed, but whether they are captive... This is due to the fact that they obtain their poison from their food chain... The frogs eat ants which eat poisonous plants, and the poison works its way up the food chain. So even a wild caught poison dart frog will become completely harmless with time as its removed from its native food chain.

    • @BigRalphSmith

      Chloe Octopus
      *This is a cut and paste of a previous response:*
      Cross breeding is possible but that practice is _highly_ frowned upon by experienced hobbyists because maintaining the breeding lines is important to the conservation side of the hobby.
      The idea is to maintain the color morphs as close to the original color morphs as possible.
      Most people who have been in the hobby for a while won't buy or trade frogs with you if you don't maintain good breeding records for each frog that shows that you've made every effort to avoid diluting the genetic line.
      Hybrids are something to be avoided in keeping dart frogs.

    • @angelthegardevoirdamsel6962
      @angelthegardevoirdamsel6962 7 років тому +1

      Thankyou very much for the information, I'll keep that in mind because there are two species of dart frogs in the video that I liked but I guess I can buy males and females of both species but not cross breed them just only keep the original pairs they came in. (in other words I mean only breed to the same species) Dart frogs are one of my favorite types of frogs besides horned frogs and tree frogs. I love frogs and I definitely want to keep the species from going extinct. Is it frowned upon if I breed the frogs (no cross breeding) and released the babies into their wild homeland canopies of the amazon rainforests? I want to help Dart frogs :(

    • @BigRalphSmith
      @BigRalphSmith 7 років тому +2

      Your desire to help the frog population in their wild habitat is admirable.
      Getting your frogs from a reputable domestic breeder rather than wild caught is probably the best way to help these animals today. Anything that can be done to reduce the taking of wild frogs from their habitat for the pet industry is probably the biggest help you can give.
      There are already breeding and rehabilitation programs going on right in the frogs own habitats. While I'm sure that you could breed and reintroduce your own frogs, it's probably safer and much more efficient for you to simply support those already existing programs by contributing financially (or with volunteer work if you are willing to travel to remote parts of South America. Not many are). The breeding programs and conservation efforts are also highly regulated by the countries where these frogs live.
      One problem is the introduction of disease, non-native bacteria and viruses, and congenital defects back in to the native population so breeding them from the wild population right there in their area is the best way to rehabilitate them without risking contamination of the local frog population.
      One of the Golden species literally no longer exists in the wild. They were plucked from the edge of extinction as their last wild colony was completely removed from their last remaining habitat and put in to a captive accelerated breeding program to try and save that particular morph population so that they can one day be reintroduced.

      putting different colors or species of frog in the same tank is not recommended at all. point being is that they can fight and interbreed which are both very bad when it comes to dart frogs. best practice is to stay with one type of frog for each tank.
