Nelson in Atlanta 1988: Picking up The House Fairy

- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- Nelson had accompanied the Pop Tarts to Atlanta for their show at Atlanta's prestigious Club Rio. To site-see around the city, Nelson rode with his friend Dick to run a errand and pick up Atlanta DJ The House Fairy and take him to his day job. Video by Nelson Sullivan July 2, 1988
These videos are national treasures.
Lee Journell it should belong to the Library of Congress.
@@unknownunknowns
I believe they have been articled with a few education institution's archives but they really do need to be submitted for LofC consideration.
Literally the first we saw of what became a national obsession when the technology was put into everyone's hands (not to mention a very organic look at a cloistered community that will all but disappear in this coming millenia, by way of love or hate).
In addition, you can relax or sleep with them on. The airport vlogs are one of my favourites.
When I'm feeling low , I watch these video's and get lost in that time again.Nelson had no idea what he was creating.A lovely man . The quiet in the background( no cell phones pinging) always gets me.
Yes he did.
Same here. I always feel better after watching his videos.
"A Time Machine" Exactly! That's exactly what these are!
❤
Nelson Sullivan was a genius who supported and encouraged people around him. He knew precisely what he was doing when making these films; this excellent documentary work captures scenes people need to see.
Even though Nelson has passed he deserves more than 27,000 subs, share this out! He was a pretty awesome guy
What? Did he passed?
well there's a bit more down here after 4 years:)
170K
Almost 200K subs now
@@ricarellan Wow that’s incredible! Nelson would be very happy about that I’m sure
It's so beautiful to watch this. no cellphone, no computers (well you know what I mean), they are just enjoying the moment. Wow. These videos are AMAZING.
My thoughts exactly!!
Nelson's style brings so much wonder to watching something as mundane as someone making calls and looking for keys.
Mandi B you mean someone actually holding something to talk on.
He truly does.
Amazing!!! Just seeing all of this makes me want to cry. I currently still live in Atlanta and it's crazy to see how much all of these locations have changed.
The sound of a rotary phone brings back so many happy memories...Not to mention going to Turtles to purchase your electronic needs .. Priceless
It’s so much more entertaining to watch these video of the REAL 80s rather than those Hollywood stereotypes.
Stefan Unson what do you even mean by that?
Chris M When I said ‘stereotypes’ I’m talking about all that exaggerated big hair with loose exercise clothing, along with the dynamic synthesizing music. What I see here is more interesting than what I see in movies and TV. It’s different to me.
I love 'em! What do you mean by Hollywood stereotypes? Do you mean movies now?
Lee Sure but also the ones made back in the ‘80s. I just noticed the difference, to me.
@@unknownunknowns I notice the difference too. The films are more cinematic and that's what I love... But yeah, I do like old films too. Like The Godfather films and most of the dramas. Old horror films are alright, but I prefer the new generation. Like The Grudge films, The Ring films, etc... But there are some really mint films out now. Like The Gentleman, The Irishman, 1912, etc... How old are you? My grandparents likes old black & white films that have cowboys and indians in them. I will watch an old black & white film with my grandparents and sometimes by myself. I don't know why, I just love them kind of films... Marlon Brando films. ❤
These are good Saturday morning videos!
The first two minutes of this is crazy! Record shopping, the spinny dial phone, checking the plane time over the phone…
I was born in 91 so my parents were in their 20s in the 80s. I’m so jealous of them in a lot of ways yet I know we have a lot of conveniences now that they would have been jealous of!
I totally get cha. I was born in "84" and I remember the 80's but I still wish I was at least a teenager back then so I could fully enjoy the 80's. Only problem is I'd be even older than I am now lol.
My Honda was born in 1991!
Something about these videos, the wave to his reflection, the long lingering shots of the owl ornament, give me such a rush of home video nostalgia
I just love Nelson he makes the most ordinary things seems so interesting I even love it when he is just walking Blackout.
Who remembers buying your tickets at turtle,,,,,wow....long time ago...loved living in 80's..i guess those home's are know more....1988 i was 19
Camping out for the Stones was one of the best times I had as a teenager. I even found some of those old Turtles Stamps that you would receive after purchasing a cassette tape.
I remember visiting family in Atlanta in the 80s and hearing the House Fairy on the radio... I have often wondered about this person as I later in my life got exposed to techno and house music. But seriously Nelson just seemed to know all the right people wherever he went. How very interesting!
We used to have house fairy's at the Sushi House in Bellingham, Washington when I lived there. Folks who couldn't afford much rent did all the chores (dishes, clean bathrooms, sort through the dumpster goodies, etc.) It was a fun way to combat homelessness. This isn't the same kind of house fairy, but I love Nelson's videos. Makes me feel like I'm right there with him. RIP
Enjoyed this. I always enjoy the videos where Nelson gets to snark about the people around him - he does it so well. I did shake my head when Stephen said he looked better without the mustache - that mustache is a work of art. Oh and Dick has great taste in music.
I was born 1993 and i love it to see clips from the 80s. The decade before my birth is so interesting for me😍😮.
I wish i could travel trough the time to see the world in the 80s. Thank you Sullivan! You make it happen 🙂❤️
Best time in history the 80's I was a teenager and it was the most wonderful time in history at least for me!!
1992 baby here! I feel the same way. These videos are true treasures
I dearly love everything about this
I freaking love these
So fascinated with this
Damn good time machine here for da city💯
There all such handsome guyes im glad they all found eachother
*That's so crazy and so sad at the same time that this was filmed July 2nd 1988 & basically one almost exact year later on the night of July 3rd 1989 going into July 4th 1989 Nelson Sullivan died in his sleep from a heart attack at the ripe young age of 41. Such a cool dude I was only born in 1986 but after discovering Nelson Sullivan videos on here and watching a lot of them I feel like he's one of my good friends that I always known. These videos are proof Nelson will always be missed forever and never forgotten*
Didnt he die from Aids?
@@mysteryman2219 no he didn’t.
Me being 22 turning 23 enjoying this… 🙏🏽🥺
Bro he was vlogging before vlogging was a thing
Halloween! … pumpkins. Omg this is so endearing
I have an owl just like that in my room. Got it from my grandparents.
Beautiful video
Nelson talking smack about Dick when he's in the tape store 😂😂
He was so disappointed with the day so far,,I,ve never seen him so bummed behind the camera
He changed the subject as if he were talking about something else LOL
@@summersees lol I was laughing so hard at that!
I have been watching these videos for about a week now (and they're fascinating), but it appears that all these men in these videos had one thing very much in common............none of them kept house. YIKES!
What do you mean?
Olga the dog!! Loved her
The dog that was chained up outside 😕
ICONIC
LOL.. 20 hours later dude still in the kitchen making salad 😂😂😂
Intriguing to watch
Strangely cool.
The shopping center (Turtles Records) is the Plaza located at 1049 Ponce De Leon Ave NW Atlanta. Steven (wanted a record) was picked up in vicinity of 1150 Blueridge Ave was dropped off at Wax N Facts Records 432 Moreland Avenue Atlanta (Little 5 Points). And next door to Wax N Facts was Stephan’s Clothing which had vintage clothing (lapel).
Miss Stefans...but I thought it was around the corner from WNF close to the Crystal Blue store.
Oh yeah, you are right! Around the corner. I can’t pinpoint where Dick Richards house is located.
@@charlesfosterkane8034 His house is on Adolphous, in Candler Park. Someone either here or on another video found it; I have seen it too, recently. In one of the videos when they arrive in ATL, they talk on a payphone with Dick to get directions, and then later, they mention turning on Adolphous. In one of the other ATL videos, they go to Candler Park Market, near Dick's place.
Clockwise Cat Thanks for letting me know. In the 1980s I was all over the places in the video. Even went to Club RIO several times. I am sure I crossed paths with these persons but never knew it. When I watch these videos I return to being a naive young Georgia Boy roaming the city.
@@charlesfosterkane8034 That must be pretty fascinating. I was living in Austin, Texas in the 80s; I moved to Atlanta in the early 90s. I missed out on Club Rio and a whole lot more, it seems. I had a blast in Austin, though, but I am enjoying seeing 80s ATL and 80s NYC through Nelson's lens. What a fascinating persona he is. And how fascinating ATL must have been in that time. It was fascinating when I moved here, too - I miss how it was.
It’s like Napoleon dynamite In real life 😆
He's still making that salad!!lol
I wasnt expecting a rotary phone! Thats pimp
That’s the quietest Alberts been in these vids
"BYYYE!" ::SLAM::
OMG BeCkY I see you everywhere. Lol
For realsies!?
@@OMG_BeCkY yes we like the same content
That rotary phone though.
Wow my old 1bed rm apartment,Right across the street from the flying biscuit,And Blake's night club...Good Times💖..P.S...Piedmont Park as well!
JEEZ, that's guys office. Lol 😆 Can we get some organization going on here. Turtles lol
The fact that one one is on their phones. Cause it doesn’t exist... and the fact that they aren’t wearing seat belts since it wasn’t enforced or made yet
9:49 bruh is that a datsun 240?
D's house is still there in Atlanta - 1714 Adolphus ... (the street number has changed since 1988 which is why it doesn't match the number on the column in the video) I'm from Atlanta so knew that area pretty well. Most of the homes around it are still standing, too. If you look across the streets on maps that one and the one next door are still there (next door is painted a new color, though)
Duck always has that same shirt 👕 on lol. Just like folks do now on UA-cam.
DIICK
GOOD LORD.....Steven's apartment building is on Somerset Terrace...or should I have said "WAS"....LaMonte Cotrell and Gary Kelley lived in the same building I met him many times when we all lived in Atlanta
30 years ago today
Poignant. A year after this, he was gone.
Rembrandt van Rijn what do you mean
Veldin yeah I found his wiki page that sucks HD had such big dreams
If he is dead, then Who is uploading these videos??? And why??
His friend who he partnered to make a TV show.
@@denverdeans why? To share what Nelson wanted to share. These 80s videos take me back. I love them dearly
.
Is that owl still there?
Yeah,Nelson was gay,but what i like I when watch these videos it isn't about being gay,it was about being alive and so was I.And wow can that guy toss a salad or what?RIP Nelson.
Dude that's gay as fuck!
Right on
Missed all the garage sales,,says so much, laughing, but this is the most bummed I,be ever seen Nelson.
Plaza Theater at 4:15, where Lady Bunny took tickets.
anyone know where stephen (steven) is now?
I just sorta skimmed it and will watch fully later, but were they dropping him off at Wax N Facts?
Steven lived in Little Five Points, so I think you're right.
In this video, you see the neighborhoods of Candler Park and L5P, and the Poncey-Highlands area. And yes, that's WNF.
is stephen stubbs still alive? i've tried looking him up but havent found anything.
CACTUSJACK try spokeo
no. he died July 4th 1989. heart attack
Miss Mary that's when Nelson died.
Anyone see that Cordoba?
Uh huh!
God, I hated fanny packs, but DJ House Fairy was cute.
I use to love them especially when I went to Six Flags because back then you didn't have a place to put your stuff, next to the ride or go to the fair with it. Lol
I like how Dick confused LSU with Clemson. Relevant in 2020.
I know.right...Dick is from South Carolina. He’s definitely not a sports guy. LOL! Great video tho
Is Steven flirting with Nelson?mabey a little hey?couldn,t blame him!
Were all of them from Atlanta except Musto and Fenton?
Pick me up!
Steven is soooooo cute. Is he still around?
todd dixon no he died in 1989 sadly
That’s Nelson Sullivan who died in July 4th 1989. Nobody has never confirmed about Stephen the young cute guy with glasses whereabouts.
Stephen joined a Mona s t ery
I was 8 years old and living in Albuquerque when this was filmed!
Ur a baby omg I was 22 same as them!
Just happy to know that I was a alive at the same time. I can tell he was a beautiful soul. ❤️
@@lendalee2451 Nelson wasn't 22 back then, he was 40! and I guess his friends weren't that young neither.
That poor dog being tied up on the porch all day 😔
Watching this Halloween weekend and Nelson's orange socks 🎃 9:55 10/30/2020
The poor Owl it looks like a bird or some other critter got his eye!
I couldn’t imagine Megan the stallion playing in that car. Lord everything has changed!
She’s better than most singers nowadays. She reminds me a little of Salt-N-Pepa or something.
Omgawd...who's on first???
Yes.
better world
That poor dog they have chained up out front for no reason, that's horrible 😥
That dog was probably a right bastard
I noticed that and yea that sucks..
Helga was her name and there's other videos of her in the house. Don't worry she was well loved.
i think it was the law that dogs be on a chain attached to the house if outside unsupervised
Nelson what up tho!!
he died
When did he die? I just found these videos?
Coach July 4th 1989
Wasn't 1988 kind of late for rotary dial phones?
Nope. They were still being sold at that time. Also they were made well and lasted forever.
@@Twinklez63 Cool! I was born in 1987 and I think my parents only had touch tone. The only time I ever saw a rotary dial phone was in my grandma's basement whom I visited a few times a year. I liked to play with it, but it wasn't connected so I didn't get to ever make an actual call with it. :(
@@moccalou rotary phones were cheaper but once the touch tone showed up everyone just HAD to have them lol.
Judith Barsi only had 23 days to live
There's only 23 days in a year? Damn.
Just a year befo he dies
Whos got Nelsons camera? I want to buy it
No one moat likely. Nelson died in 89 and his friends all moved on to either prison, big time star stuff, or died. Dick ran the channel up until he died a year ago.
@@genericwhitemale1114 : How did you find out Dick died?
@@lauramc5688 google. Google his name
@@genericwhitemale1114 : Thank you.
This isn’t really vlogging, this is someone recording their last days because he was dying of AIDS ,lots of people recorded back in the day but material get lost or never been uploaded to internet
Frank Nitti he didn't die of aids supposedly
hearts truth it was a heart attack
Ryan Stroup I know
so he was filming himself bc of aids...
His first video on youtube dats 1983 and the last video was in 1989. That doenst make sense considering people with aids diagnose back then couldn last that long with such a good look.
He wasn doing that bc of aids. at all.
Doesnt make sense.
It wasn't AIDS. He unexpectedly died young from a heart attack. He was just ahead of his time and made these awesome videos (basically Vlogs).
Ok so the hanging one eyed owl was creepy.
Agreed
Rotary phones ugh
Hes making it look like the 80s cause he's flim with 80s cam
