  • Join me as I get dressed from head to toe for a winter promenade in the 1840s!
    I made every part of this Victorian ensemble except for the shoes, stockings, gloves, bonnet, and cloak -- and in the 19th century, these products would have been purchased, rather than made at home!
    I used Laughing Moon 114 for the fan-front dress and Simplicity 2890 for the chemise and corset. The petticoats were drafted.

    Could you tell me what class would have worn dresses similar to this one? I love the look btw

    • @Pour_La_Victoire
      @Pour_La_Victoire  4 роки тому +15

      Thank you! We can assume that middle class women and up wore dresses like this. In this time, the style of dresses was rather uniform across classes, with the differences in materials and decoration denoting class. This dress is made from printed cotton, which was affordable and widely available in the mid 19th century. A more luxurious dress may have been made of printed wool or silk, or used a print that featured more colors. There are many photographs (daguerreotypes) from this time showing women in similar dresses, and daguerreotypes were rather affordable (they ranged from 25 cents to $2, based on quality and size). An average daguerreotype cost 50 cents, which is about $10 today.

    Were bonnets necessary? Would it be inappropriate to go out without a bonnet?

    • @Pour_La_Victoire
      @Pour_La_Victoire  4 роки тому +2

      I try to avoid "always" and "never" statements with regards to historical fashions, but wearing bonnets was very common if not socially expected. There was no sunscreen or sunglasses, so bonnets helped shield the wearer from the sun; they also provided warmth. I've worn this entire ensemble (bonnet included) to go ice skating when it was below freezing, and I was warm and toasty for hours!

    • @Pour_La_Victoire
      @Pour_La_Victoire  4 роки тому +2

      Further, I believe if you omit a bonnet, you'd still have your hair "dressed" in some way, with a cap or flowers or something.

    in the 1850s and 1860s they had hoop skirts didn't they? when would they put that on?

    • @Pour_La_Victoire
      @Pour_La_Victoire  10 місяців тому

      The hoop skirt was patented in 1856-57 (with of course variations of the design patented after that). They would be worn on top of the drawers, sometimes on top of a short underpetticoat (for warmth and modesty, should the wind blow up the skirt), and underneath the regular petticoats.

    • @Pour_La_Victoire
      @Pour_La_Victoire  3 роки тому +2

      I used my 18th century style pomade from LBCC Apothecary on Etsy 🙂 and I styled my hair when it hadn't been washed for a few days.

    Thx so much. I'm researching the clothes from 1840. And this was very helpful. Do you think in the Wild West between 1840-1860 the clothes around that time might have looked similar?

    • @Pour_La_Victoire
      @Pour_La_Victoire  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, even in the western US women's clothing styles would have been up-to-date with the fashions :) From 1840-1860 we'd see the waistline of dresses change from pointed to straight, and the sleeves change from narrow to full.

    Just curious, but is this middle class or lower class? For writing references

    • @Pour_La_Victoire
      @Pour_La_Victoire  Рік тому

      Excellent question! I think this ensemble would be appropriate for middle class and the upper end of the lower class - not dirt poor, but could have been someone's Sunday best. The absence of lace, silk, feathers, and other expensive adornments makes this ensemble attainable.

    So basically only your face is showing. Looks like you might have a problem if you have to look sideways. That hat would obstruct your vision.
