I can't imagine these days having a cigarrete brand sponsoring a tennis event 😂 3:52
Well they have gambling companies sponsoring tennis events today. What an improvement 😅
No Chung vs Djokovic?
I guess they didn't want to feature Djokovic twice and the Istomin match was definitely the bigger upset.
@@MMM18092but they could feature Nadal twice. Hmm
Djokovic was injured and shouldn’t have played the event.
Not greatest
@@mysticnomad89 they had two matches of nadal to match the 2 times he won the event.
Rafa losing to veradasco R1 2016
Murray losing to M Zverev R4 2017
Stan losing to sandgren R2 2018
Serena losing to Wang R3 2020
Sharapova losing to Kirilenko R1 2010
rafa losing to verdasco is not an upset did you see there 2009 epic match that went 5 hours , and the rest are legit .
@@malcolmnorman5694 2009 verdasco was a top 20 player who reached SF beating Murray & tsonga. In 2016 he was in bad form without reaching reaching 4R of a single slam in 2015 , beat #5 Rafa in R1 only to lose to an unknown Israeli player in R2. It was a huge upset with worst result of rafa @ AO in his entire career.
@@NR-ov6po ok
Nadal was poor 2015-16@@NR-ov6po
Nadal was poor 2015-1😮6@@NR-ov6poand he's barely got 2 titles at the Australian open. Not like he was some dominant presence in Australia
Amazing atmosphere at the Sampras v Philippoussis match.
That ball was in. Safin match.
Johansson acting like he won an ITF 15K lol
Well, most days on court he looked like he was filling out his tax return so this was a step up.
Off the top of my head i remember Boris Becker having a few shockers.
1985 as the reigning Wimbledon champ he lost to a no-name dutch guy Schapers.
Also remember him losing to Wally Masur one year.
The handlebar tache and mutton chops need to return. I can see Tsitsipas, Khachanov and Meddy pulling it off.
As an Uzbek, I’m so proud of that Istomin victory over Novak! 🇺🇿🇺🇿
Why Wozniacki-Dokic is on this list ? Wozniacki was 17, outside the top 10 and had never reached a quarter final in a Slam in her career before
I think it has more to do with Unranked Jelena Dokic making a comeback.
Yeah, that is just sloppy by the video editor.
Tsonga beating Nadal in 2008 in a SF was not a "great upset". Same with Fernando Gonzalez, he was top 10 in the world when he beat Nadal in 07.
Not Tsonga who wasn’t even seeded
@@franbatista9062 Tsonga was top 40 in the world and he had already beaten Murray, Gasquet and Youzhny so while it was an upset ranking wise, it wasn't as big as they make it out to be. Nadal was also unproven on HC up to that point. Chung over Djokovic was a much bigger upset and they didn't even include that.
The 2017 R4 match between Murray v Mischa Zverev should have been added here. All cards were in Murray's favor being world number 1 at the time, and with Djokovic out. Of course, its anyone's guess if he would have beat Nadal or Federer.
He would have never beaten roger in 2017 never
Roger would likely have beaten him in the next round, but losing to Mischa Zverev was beyond ridiculous. One of his worst matches.
Murray never won the Australian Open. So maybe he is not a factor anyway in that Major. And it would be foolish to think Murray beating either of Federer and Nadal when the guy couldn't even beat Mischa. Also we all know how Murray became number 1 and hence the results proved.
@@danielmacdonald9287not ridiculous. He got beat. There is a reason why Murray never the Australian Open. Just not good enough in that Major.
@@loyedloyed6602 I don’t think we give enough credit to the amount of finals and semis he’s reached. Although he never did win it, he was coming off a phenomenal run from the latter end of 2016.
Absolutely love the Johnny Newcombe tash
Mark Edmondson (back in 1976) is still to this day the last Aussie male to win the Australian Open.
Since then none of McNamara, Cash, Rafter, Hewitt, Philapoussis, Kyrgios, De Minaur etc could achieve it.
Wouldnt feel too bad though, by comparison the last Englishman to win Wimbledon was way back in 1936, Fred Perry, 88 years ago.
Women's defeat are not called upset
So what is it called again?
True Federer fans like❤
Really fernando gonzalez vs nadal is a upset?
3:09 Yes Australian Open was once on grass.
All grand slams were once on grass except for Roland Garros
@@marianogonzalez9248 Incluso el USO se jugó en arcilla varios años durante los 70.
@@AlejandroGarcia-wz1qionly for 3 years. US Open was traditionally on grass as well.
I mean, Nadal was just outplayed by 2 excellent players that reached the final, were top 10 for a good period of time and M1000 winners, but man, Djokovic just can't lose to Istomin. Definitely, the most disappointing defeat here in Australia and in GS in general.
Sukova over Navratilova was the biggest
broke her 74 match winning streak
Istomin beating djokovic Uzbekistan W
I would have included Wang over Serena in the third round of AO 2020.
Venus Pironkova 2006 R1
Jung beating Djokovic in 2018,Nadal lost to Verdasco in 2016, Murray lost to Misha Zverev in 2017 should all be up there
Alberto Martin def. Lleyton Hewitt 2002 R1
How can you not include chung
Wozniacki vs Dokic is so random 💀
Woz wasn't a star back in 2009
Woz reached the final of USO 2009. Wasn’t a star?
@@teasellermodi5897 Exactly, Us Open in September... AO is in january
@@djordjenikolic9059 Yeah I feel some of these are retrospective based on what their careers became.
Whoreniacki wasn't, isn't and will never be a star
@@pepe3797I mean former world number 1 but ok
The biggest upset of all Mark Edmondson was 22 yo at that time
I would have put Verdasco over Rafa on here. Even though neither were at their best: Verdasco avenged his loss seven years later + came back from 2 sets to 1 down + bageled Rafa after being down 0-2 in the fifth + this was the only first-round Major loss of Rafa's career besides 2013 Wimby
Not greatest ever upset caliber. Nadal hardly won 2 Australian open titles. He was very human in Australia. Verdasco a once great player peaked that day and beat him. Had it been fed or Novak, that's different
@@joniljoseph2934 But he reached the finals six times. The bad thing for him is that he faced good versions of Djokovic and Federer
Once Soderling defeated Nadal in French open
This video is about the Australian Open.
chang beating lendl. graf losing to aratnxa. serena williams vs vinci. graf mcneil. nadal darcis.
This is only about the Australian Open.
10:34 that is not out
Swiatek and Rybakina being feature here as main upsets in the tournament's history(!) together with the likes of Navratilova, Capriati, Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic seemed rather odd IMO. They are good players but nowhere near to the status of the others, mostly considering how inconsistent the current WTA tour is
At 22 Swiatek have won as many slams as Capriati won in her entire career. I can see the argument for Rybakina (even though it's not shocking for me to see her in that list) but Swiatek is already an all time great
Also McDonald he beats Nadal last year
Not upset at all...Nadal could lose also in the first round against Jack Draper who got injured...
He tore a hip muscle. Then missed a whole season. Not an upset at all
I was there for the Rybakina v Blinkova tiebreaker, it was unreal, pure chaos throughout the last five points
How about Verdasco beating Nadal in 2016.
To be honest, Rafa's losses before 2009 at AO were hardly upsets. I mean, IT was before he fully developer as a hard court player at the major level. Both od his losses in 2007 and 2008 came before his first hard court Gs final and also correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe Rafa did not even beat a top 10 player at AO before 2009.
I agree. Some of these seem retrospective based on what their careers became.
Istomin vs Djokovic?
It was upset yes, Djokovic was coming from 2 consecutive years having big winning streaks and he was also defending champion!
cant forget about istomin over djokovic in 2017
the biggest upset is Vincent Spadea beating Andre Agassi
Any nadal match outside of clay from 2007 to 2016
so that soldering match wasn't an upset ???
@@malcolmnorman5694 it was an upset because it was on clay and at Roland Garros, a best of five set tournament, but one thing that was an Achilles' heel for Nadal is any player with a huge forehand. Another example where he was beaten by a player who has probably the strongest forehand ever is at the 2007 Australian Open where Fernando Gonzales beat Rafael Nadal in straight sets.
That's basically what this video is saying... Any Nadal loss to non big 4 is the biggest upset ever. Even though he was only ever dominant at 1 slam. This video is silly. Thumbs down from me
@@joniljoseph2934 I agree that its silly but to say he was only dominant at 1 slam is ridiculous. He has 4 US open titles that's only 1 less than Federer and Sampras and tied with Djokovic.
Anyone went on to win GS?
Tsonga, Sukova, Gonzalez, and Moya went on to the finals.
Moya won Roland Garros the following year.
@@josephciccolini1590it is about winning a major. Not just finals which is a loser nonetheless.
Sharapova lost tooKirilenko at 2010
Nadal lost to Verdasco at 2016
Serena lost to Wang at 2020
Andrescu lost to Hsieh at 2021
woman are capable of everything
10:54 That's not Mark Edmondson. That's Jesus. God gave him the win(d).
Women handshakes are so cold 🥶🥶🥶
Really? Fernando Gonzales defeating 2007 Nadal outside clay is considered as a great upset? Seriously? What a bonehead pick.
If we're going with finals, I was astonished Wawrinka beat Nadal in 2014. Yes, Rafa was injured, but I gave Stan zero chance as he never took from Rafa a set in 10 previous meetings. Misha Zverev beating Murray was also shocking.
Stan is a 3 time slam champion. Not that big an upset in hindsight, which matters as well
@@joniljoseph2934 in hindsight sure. But then you can say that for ex in hindsight Safin could lose to anyone at any stage so him losing to Johansson is not such a big upset. I gave Stan no chance against Rafa and that's the case for most. I didn't give Stan a chance against Novak in 2015. Only in his 3rd final with Novak I thought Stan has quite good chances to win.
Mischa Zverev beat Murray not Sascha.
Nadull faked that injury, he was running like a rabbit in the match, and he was simply outplayed
@@pepe3797 he beat a healthy Djokovic in 2 slam finals. That win against a hampered Nadal is not one of the biggest upsets ever. Stop it
Novak Djokovic is still the goat. THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME. CHAMPION, A TRUE LEGEND. ALL HAIL NOVAK. ❤🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸
What you mean still? He never was
