Although its not exactly exciting now, every subsequent generation will be able to use the driver support they are building now and should support a larger variety of games. Regardless, its good to have a third player in the gpu market. Glad GN is the one to be able to get the initial coverage of these cards as I know its always going to be legitimate and unbiased.

Or intel will abandon it like they've abandoned their other video card efforts. They're about a year late to jump into the "low GPU stock" sales boom. GPU's are becoming available and the Intel offerings don't look competitive. I mean I hope they become a decent competitor but, they seem a day late and a dollar short.

I hope Intel continues to press forward with their GPU program in the coming years, even if it isn't that competitive right off the hop. The duopoly in discrete graphics is terrible for consumers and companies like Intel are the only ones who can reasonably enter this space and not go bankrupt immediately.

That type of heatsink is very cost effective to manufacture, because it is extruded aluminium profile and then cut & machined to length. Tooling costs are greatly lower than with a heatsink cut and assembled from individual plates.. With extruded profile you have some design limitations, such as fin density and thickness, and you cant get those fins go all the way through as the profile needs a solid area to keep it in one piece.

In fairness, the Gunnir card is about $160. What Tom said in other video was that the expected price for the A380 would be $129-$139, but that doesn't limit the upper price (same as with Nvidida/AMD). That said, it's likely that if you ever see an A380 for $129 it probably won't be built with such high quality as this Gunnir one.

I think you’re right. I’m a fan of aarch64, run 3 generations now of AMD Zen, and have been team green since the RivaTNT. But I think Intel, under Gelsinger, is about to go on an industry rampage the likes of which we haven’t seen since the last time he was de facto boss (and Intel was wounded… after Itanic, NutBust and the shame of adopting AMD64). GPU wise, they have two successive generations already in pipe, they’re pouring money into the foundry side of the shop (and while they got lazy in this space, they know just as much about applied material science in semiconductors as TSMC, so I’d advise TSMC to cut the cocky remarks because their 5nm isn’t that impressive).
Lisa Su’s AMD is reasonably well fortified to deal with Intel, because she’s built a strong roadmap (very much taking a page out of Gelsinger’s 2000’s product planning book) and has diversified the business, now consisting of three computing businesses, CPU, GPU and FPGA (incidentally, the same alignment Intel is pursuing).
But Nvidia? Nvidia is very, very vulnerable. The ARM deal collapsed, largely due to mismanagement by Jensen (announcing too early, not understanding how to play the geopolitical field, poor PR management, etc.), which now leaves Nvidia with basically their one business: GPU’s. And Intel, who in real terms is bigger, run by a more experienced CEO, is coming for your market, and they’re going to do it by first grabbing share, and then crushing margins as they push to the high end.
Meanwhile, Nvidia is already facing a brewing margin crisis, due to a bubble collapse in crypto creating a product glut, a huge market valuation collapse, a management credibility crisis due to the ARM debacle, a customer revolt due to their recent pricing policies, and partner fractures due to how they’ve interacted with TSMC and Samsung.
The worst part, speaking as a long-time Nvidia shareholder, I don’t think Jensen gets it: he can’t see the perfect storm forming, because Nvidia has been at the top for so long, and they’ve gotten remarkably lucky (despite huge missteps in the past). While I think Nvidia will survive it, I’ll bet real money that Jensen is done as CEO in the next 24 months.

@smakfu I agree with you on Nvidia having tough times ahead. Lovelace looks like it is going to be a furnace while Intel has 4 generations planned out (but not all designed) and RDNA 3 is predicted to give Radeon the GPU crown for the first time in over a decade. If Intel can get products out on schedule (no simple task for Intel), I believe the next 3-5 years are going to have exceptional growth in PC performance and diversity. Even if Intel dominates the desktop quickly and becomes a relevant force in the GPU space, it still has its work cut out to take on AMD in the mobile and especially server spaces.
As for Intel making professional workloads a strong suit of the ARC GPUs, I think the reason for this is several fold:
      a) it is a neglected segment of the market since low end Quadro died which means Intel will have at least one USP, even if the rest of the performance is ranging from mildly competitive to "needs a lot of work".
      b) it is easier to optimise the drivers for the 5-10 most common production workloads than 100s of games.
      c) people building low end workstations have less chance to complain. If gaming was buggy as hell and poor performing, LTT, GN etc would shit on the cards and significantly damage Intel's chances going forward.

    • @ChrisPkmn
      @ChrisPkmn 2 роки тому +3

The quadro P2000 (& P2200) have been replaced by the RTX A2000. In terms of MSRP, power draw, performance, & features (tensor cores & ecc) the a2000 is better. Plus Nvidia recently released low end tensor quadros with the T400, 600, & 1000.
That said, if intel has good tensor core equivalents, gets validation similar to AMD's W series & Nvidia's quadro / RTX A series, then going intel at this price point is a no brainer. Av1 encoding could take the home theater crowd by storm.

Your teardowns have really helped me through the years when repasting a card. The bit I find especially helpful is the type of memory thermal pads
A couple of mistakes in this one though. There are clear channels cut in the heatsink to allow a tiny amount of air to blow over the board components. It's not all a solid block like you mentioned. Also the fans are Ecotherm and the logo of the company is what you confused with the letter G. It's a misleading logo but the website at the bottom of the fan sticker makes it obvious

I still don't understand the insane amount of hate for the RX 6400 (included in this video). Then again, I've lived through being broke in the late ATI days. If it's cheap (by current standards), can play popular games at playable frame-rates, AND can fit in a used SFF OEM case (with its included PSU), it's gold. In regards to those cheap/garbage fans included with the lowest end LP cards.... if you leave them sitting for long enough, they're going to be worse than running them at 50-100% daily, since release in an OEM build.
This GPU tear-down is awesome, but there's no need to trash the budget option, that was actually a viable option before the recent GPU price drops.

For those who bother to actually read comments and want to make a little bit more of the knowlege, one of the niche things this class of GPU's tell you is what to expect from high end integrated graphics, as the die on a APU will roughly have the same layout with a slower memory bandwith(for obvious reasons)
the RX 6400 has the same core/CU count as the AMD 680M inside of the 6800U APU. If you have a remote interest in any high end pc handhelds, these gpus will roughly give you the ceiling of performance to expect.

I think the A380 is really interesting. I'm putting together a new HTPC setup which should do high-resolution high-framerate video playback, support HDMI 2.1, and not struggle too much with some casual gaming and video game emulation. It's gonna be running as a VM with some PCIe devices passed through on my home server, which already utilizes the iGPU on my CPU for media transcode. I want the HTPC VM to be able to play the raw media files though, so I want a dedicated GPU to pass through. Seeing as the lowest-end models Nvidia and AMD have on offer with support for AV1 decode and HDMI 2.1 are the RTX 3050 (not really the same price range) and the RX6400 (same price range but not close to competitive), I'm really looking forward to the A380 launching as a retail model in the rest of the world as it's actually pretty unique in its value proposition, assuming the price stays somewhere around the $150 mark.
