Your face will look like you again. I can see your swelling go down and the movement in your face get better each vlog. Try not to compare yourself to other people’s healing - bodies are different! You honestly look way less swollen than a few vlogs ago and it will continue to go down! You’re looking great!

      When I twisted my ankle
I forgot to place freezing ice on it
So instead I started taking Voltaren anti inflation tablets along with placing Voltaren gel on the swollen areas and it helped a great deal

When I had this surgery it felt like it took 3 months for it to look normal. But our sense of normal is different from a strangers because we hyper-analyze our own face in a way other do not

The problem is we live in a world today we’re people think having major trauma will heal instantly... It gives people such unrealistic expectations.

  • @arielion1niol
    @arielion1niol 4 роки тому +321

Your face is 100% still swollen, that’s not what it’s going to look like!! Your face went through a lot of trauma, you just have to give it time to get back to how it was! I would def continue with anti inflammatory foods and also perhaps see if there’s any type of light massage you’d be allowed to do? Not sure about that. But Your jaw was one way for 2 decades and then in a couple of hours it was completely changed, you gotta assume it will need a little time to adjust and chill out!

      When I twisted my ankle
It took multiple weeks maybe even months to start to recover properly so obviously won't get better in a super hurry.
One day at a time, I suppose

I looked weird for at least 2 months after my jaw surgery! Like, at a certain point I *thought* all the swelling was gone, and then several weeks later I looked back at pictures from that time and was like nope, I was still swollen. Just try to be patient! You're already looking much better, but you've still got a ways to go.

Hi Shelby - I have had this exact surgery twice. My first maxillofacial surgery was in 7th grade; bottom jaw went back and top jaw came forward and I became the proud new owner of screws and plates in my jaw. I had a small growth spurt not long after and went back for a second “tweak”my senior year (a total bummer, but a blessing nonetheless). I can only assume the algorithm gods brought me here for a reason so I’m leaving you as much positivity as my fingers can type.
IT IS GOING TO GET BETTER.
IT IS GOING TO GET SO MUCH BETTER.
YOUR BODY WENT THROUGH SOME MAJOR ISH AND YOU ARE HANDLING IT LIKE A CHAMP!!!! Seriously, like no bruising, amazing speech...documenting every step and editing?!?!
    Did I mention...
IT IS GOING TO GET BETTER. Truly.
You already know all of this. I’m just future-Shelby, 18 years post-op popping in to remind you that you did an incredible thing for yourself and you won’t regret it.
Get some sunshine, grab a few extra potato cakes for me because they look bomb, and get your arse in bed.
    Subscribed.

I had major oral surgery recently as well and it is really hard. I feel like everyone is telling me how good my teeth/jaw looks...but I’m grieving the face I’ve seen in the mirror for last 37 years. It’s been harder emotionally I think than physically at this point.
It’s ok to feel that way. Give yourself time to process. ❤️❤️

Yup - you hang in there too :) In 1978 a girl I worked with had jaw and bite stuff done early winter, maybe right after Christmas - I didn't see her for almost a year - she had to tell me who she was, I seriously didn't recognize her face at all - but she looked great and a year or two later, she was totally accustomed to all the changes and was doing fantastic. Hope you can find some comfort in knowing that as well.

You broke my heart when you got sad towards the end of the video. Please don't get down... it is all part of the process. Everyone heals differently. I had sinus surgery and my face did not move for almost 4 weeks! Everyone else I spoke to was fine after a week!
You will be fine and will look back in a few weeks and wonder why you ever even worried.

I’ve had my double jaw surgery one year ago now. Some days I still have to get used to my face! It takes 1 year to get rid of all the swelling, so please don’t judge your face by how it’s looking now! I was on a liquid diet for 6 weeks, which was, next to the pain and accepting the changes in my face, one of the hardest parts. This surgery and the recovery is absolutely brutal and nobody really understands what you’re going through, but just know that I completely understand you and everything you’re feeling is normal! Stay strong and patient, it will get beter! It just takes such a long time. You got this! ❤️

I had jaw surgery about 3 years ago... there's a number of things you're probably going to go through:
    - You'll feel very low energy: it's difficult to eat since you can't chew (I lost 10 pounds in the first week after surgery) + your body just experienced trauma ... this was only for about the first few weeks for me
    - Some swelling is normal for up to a year post-surgery.... by about 6-months after my surgery was I no longer to tell that there was swelling. If you're not happy with how things look now, don't worry too much, things haven't settled yet
    - You're really going to question your decisions at the beginning, I remember when the post-surgery depression hit, I almost broke down crying... "Why did I get a surgery that alters myself? Why couldn't I be just content with what I had?!" My case was bad enough it was causing me pain / deemed medically necessary, regardless of the reason... you still feel like you made a bad choice
    - You're going to find it difficult to see people that know you. "Did you get a new face?" was a question I got asked by one of my college classmates... already fighting with the post-surgery depression, having that phrasing made me think I did it for the wrong reason. I was in my final semester of college when I had the surgery... there were many final presentations... I never had a problem with speaking in front of people in the past, but with the fact that I was still swollen, was relearning how to talk probably, and fighting a heck-load of mental problems with self-confidence because of the surgery... I remember having a rush of anxiety any time I had to stand up to present. People were constantly commenting on "you look different", or "you need to present with more confidence!" (which was never a problem I had in the past)
    - You may end up having permanent numbness... if you do (which I pray you do not), it will take awhile for it not to be the main thing you "feel"... I never regained feeling after the surgery, it sucks... but amazingly enough, after a couple years, it's actually not so bad... I can sing the "I can't feel my face when I'm with you" song... and it's always true ;)
    Now... to a positive....
    - You probably won't regret the experience.... it will take time to accept your new appearance, but once you do, you will love it. My jaw is so much more functional now (plus the more defined jawline was a plus, hehe)... every time I bite into something without pain, it makes me extremely giddy. If I could go back in time and change my mind about going through the surgery, I 100% would not... I'm more confident now, I don't have jaw pain, and I have a smile that I love.
(If you want any more details, feel free to PM me)

@Cylian Barichard I have partial feeling in my lower lip and gums, and anesthesia like numbness on my chin (minus the fact that I can feel temperature differences). I think prefer the full numb over the partial numb... my nerves don't know what to do with pain and so they freak out and send rushes of feeling to the entire partially numb zone. Not exactly pleasant... but surprisingly, I'm used to it now.

Hi Shelby! I had double jaw surgery back in December and completely understand all your feelings - and they are totally valid. I was EXTREMELY swollen. The first week was the worst. I felt like I was swollen forever. By the 4 month mark for me, I noticed my “old face” coming back. My face doesn’t look the same as it used to, but I am GRATEFUL for the change and the procedure, and I think you will be too. I understand the fear of not knowing the final outcome, and it can feel isolating looking in the mirror week by week and not recognizing yourself. I see the difference in your swelling every vlog, so keep your head up and don’t stress :) You are beautiful inside and out and will have absolutely stunning results, I promise! xo

If you ever worry about how much struggle the surgery has been. Think of this, my mom had upper and lower like yours in the ‘80s, the doctors screwed up and had to redo it two weeks later. Few years later one of the doctors lost their medical license and the other went to prison for killing his wife. Now her case is taught in medical school as malpractice.

    Hi Shelby! ❤
It's so GOOD to see you again!! ❤
You're recovery looks to me like it's going quite well.
You're up and around, going places, etc.!
These are all very good signs!!!
I understand how you must be feeling about your face looking different. This is to be expected. You've had major surgery! And it's only been a handful of weeks. Healing takes time, lots of time.
Perhaps your expectations of being healed in just a few short weeks was not realistic?
I would like to talk with you truthfully, so if you're not up to it, you should probably just stop reading right now.
    Positivity.
Please try not to think of the negatives - these thoughts, about "what might happen" can turn into fears, and the reality is that they haven't even happened yet.
Worrying about things that "might be" will not change the outcome of these things.
It's just a waste of your precious energy.
Your body needs the positive energy to heal.
If looking in the mirror makes you think negative thoughts, then stop looking in the mirror. Really. Not even kidding.
The ONLY time you need to look in the mirror is when you're checking for positive signs of the swelling going down. As soon as that chore is over, walk away!
You don't need to keep the old habit of looking in the mirror to brush your teeth.
    Just turn away while brushing.
And you're so naturally pretty, that you don't even need makeup to look presentable on a daily basis. You can do your hair without a mirror too.
Just takes making some new habits, that's all.
Also, you are such a beautiful young woman!
    Ok...
Let's put things into perspective for just a minute...
Let's pretend for a minute (emphasis on PRETEND) that your face DOES stay just as it is right now.
(Which it won't! We're only pretending!)
However, if it DID stay this way - you would STILL be a very beautiful young woman! Seriously.
It may not be your old face, but even at the stage your in right now, you are still HEAD AND SHOULDERS above most of the population as far as beauty goes. It really is true!
    Plus - you're smart too!!!
You've got the WHOLE PACKAGE !
Today - Right Now - YOU are one Completely Fantastic Woman!
    Do you believe that?
    Your viewers know it.
    Your friends know it.
    Your family knows it.
You just have to remind yourself of it.
    And often!!
Ok - the pretending about your face staying this way is over now.
We all KNOW your face is NOT going to stay this way.
It seems that YOU are the one who needs some convincing.
So here goes, I'll take a shot at it!
The swelling, and your facial movements are improving DAILY. DAILY!!!!
Not just a tiny bit per week -
    But DAILY Improvements!
So the important thing is to keep positive thoughts running through your mind as much as possible. As often as possible.
When we get bored, it's easier to let those pesky negatives in, and they tend to overstay their welcome!!
So something that helps is to try this:
For every negative thought, counter it with a positive thought!
    Over, and over, and over.
    Just keep doing that!
    All day - EVERY day.
Which sounds simple, but it really does help in the long run.
You have SOOOOO many positive things going for you!
SO MANY positive things in your life too. From what we see in the videos, you also have a very loving family who is quite supportive. There are many people in this world who don't have even that. You have so many good & positive things in your life!
AND it looks as if you're healing quite well. So you must have very good medical people helping you. Even if there are hiccups along the way, you can count on them to see you through it.
Just the fact that you were able to HAVE this corrective surgery - is in itself - a positive feature of your life!
Remember how hard it was to chew correctly before?
Well, now you've taken the positive steps to correct that situation, which is going to be a positive Life Improvement. How lucky you are to be in that position! Think of all the people who cannot do what you've been able to do.
You've built a life that allows you all this good fortune.
Bcuz you've built such a good life for yourself, you and Monica have the good fortune to now own another property!
This is a very positive thing!
This surgery is a good choice. The way your face looks today is a good, positive thing. Beauty is really measured by your personality anyway.
You are more beautiful inside, you are more than just your face! You show that to us all the time!
    (I'm just reminding you)
You, and your face have nothing to worry about!
    Why?
Bcuz you're already ahead of the game!
I know you can think of many more positive things to fill your brain with. Push out those negative thoughts with all the positives in your life.
    Positive thoughts,
    create positive energy,
    creates positive healing.
    🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️🧘🧘‍♂️🧘🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️🧘🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️🧘
    Smile from the inside -
Love is all around you ❤🧡💛💚💙💜❤🧡💛💚💙💜❤🧡💛💚💙💜❤🧡💛💚💙💜❤

When you started the series on the surgery, I noticed before the operation there was a visible underbite. When you're recovered, I think you'll be better off. It really just looks very stiff right now and swollen. When that goes away and you are able to move your face normally, it will be fine. This has been just a long process. They told me I'd have to wait at least 6 months but when I look back at the 6 months post op pictures I think I looked so swollen then. Please give yourself time and don't feel discouraged if it feels like it was a bad decision!

Shelby these vlogs are so interesting and I love the dog footage. I know what you're going through is super hard, but I promise your viewers are seeing so much improvement in every vlog. Especially toward the end of this one, I noticed massive reduction in the swelling and your voice sounded nearly back to normal. Keep pushing through, you're a trooper!

Shelby, Your brain stresses out when it is unable to predict what is going to happen next. (this is why you are most comfortable at home where you can predict almost everything). For your entire life your eyes have seen a certain thing when you look in the mirror. Your brain expects to see what it has always seen in the mirror. When it does not see the same thing it stresses you out (by actually releasing stress hormones) It does not matter how it looks (good, awesome, super awesome) your brain is failing to predict what your eyes will see in the mirror.
Give it time and your brain will alter its expectation and stop stressing you out. While you are healing, it is changing every day... so it will be stressful until it settles down.
And you're going to look awesome. Keep using the arnica gel. We use that in the dojo for lumps and bumps and it is awesome. Note that arnica quickly loses its efficacy when exposed to air. So small fresh batches - however you have to do that.
    Hang in there. You rock.

Girl, I know it's hard but keep reminding yourself that the reduction of swelling in the face takes time. Skin on the face heals rapidly. But the jaw and the rest of it will take as much time as if you had broken your arm or leg. Give it the full 6-8 weeks. Your face will NOT be like this forever. Promise. You're doing great! Also, my dogs name is teddy too but he's a standard white poodle and perks up just like your pup when he hears the W-A-L-K;)

I promise. Your swelling has gone down so much and it seems so much easier for you to talk. Cant wait to see your progress in the next video! 💕

I can understand the worry of not knowing the end result. You are progressing so well and it is definitely still swollen. This was a major surgery and your body is recovering from the trauma.. Not only of the surgery but from the anesthesia and meds. Give yourself some grace and allow your body to heal. Rest, drink plenty of fluids and let time do its thing. I hope all went well w your checkup. I look forward to seeing future updates!

I had major surgery and I don’t thing I was close to myself for 8 weeks and the majority of my swelling wasn’t gone for 12 weeks. Your beautiful face will be back and probably more beautiful with your jaw aligned properly. 💙💙💙

I got my wisdoms all out last Wednesday ( I know, nothing compared to Jaw surgery but still lol ) and since 2/4 of my teeth were impacted and fully covered by bone, the surgery was a bit more extensive than expected and I now have several stitches going on in my mouth.
You’re doing great Shelby! Swelling is temporary!

Sending love to you, you’re handling this like a champ!! You face is looking a lot better, but it is definitely still swollen and I think it still has a way to go before you look normal. I understand it’s frustrating, and it probably feels even more so because the initial swelling went down pretty fast, and now it’s going at a slower pace. I fully believe it will settle, suit you and not look too different from your old face. Xx

Shelby - I know exactly what you are going through! I had this surgery several years ago and I really think they need to prepare patients for the change in their face more so than they do. It's like looking at a completely different person in the mirror. It's crazy what just a few millimeters of change can do to an appearance. If you ever want to chat, I'm here for you. I just came across your channel the other day. I will say that it does get better - not on a daily basis, but more on a weekly/monthly basis. I can answer any questions you might have since I am completely healed now. Peace!

I also had the same surgery done with me. Best decision I have ever made! It was so weird with how much of a change it was because all my life having an underbite, and finally getting it "where it should be" and almost having to re-learn how to eat. I was weirded out for about a month or two after surgery and wasn't sure what to think about the change. Also had something happen and my lower lip has been numb ever since. This was about 3 years ago, and I'm glad I did it, even though my lip is still numb. You'll think back to your surgery and be glad you did it after about a full year or so. Enjoy your recovery and take it easy! You got this! :)

I've heard that swelling after double-jaw surgery take soooo long and everyone's response to swelling are different, some people's swelling took 6-12 months. Be patient it's so early to judge your looks, i saw a lot of people talking about how much they hate their new face after the double-jaw surgery but after 6-12 months their opinion completely changed.

My best friend had the surgery when we were teens and her face was swollen the entire summer. She had surgery first week after school was done and she finally started looking more "normal" probably around September or October. I am an ortho PA and we tell our total knee patients that they may have swelling up to 9 months after surgery...so I am not too surprised at all that you have so much swelling in your face still at this point. It has only been a month! Plus, my knee patients are up and moving day one after surgery. You have been so limited in what you can do. The more you're able to start chewing and using your jaw again, the sooner the swelling will go away. You've got this Shelby!!!

Hey Shelby! I just wanted to let you know my BFF got the same surgery and she said hers took a while for the swelling to go down to. She said she went through the exact same feelings especially watching other people on UA-cam healing quickly but she wanted me to tell you that the swelling 100% will go away and that you will def get your smile back and The Who look will for sure go away and to just hang in there. Her doctor said she also had a little infection and that people are just different the way they heal so don’t compare your progress to any one else if you can manage 😟. Also she said it takes a little while for your jaw to figure out it’s new resting place and the best thing to do is to do some face and jaw exercises the doc prescribed and it will naturally align in the new way. Your doing great! I am sending you healing vibes. Aloha love from Kauai! 🌺🏝❤️
