DId you hear their early stuff? I suggest you listen to the earliest versions of "Murder Angels", "Zombie", "Black Mummy" (harsh vocals version), the last part of "Terror". The ones released by Paul Chain (some of which are unfortunately featured in a very rare cassette tape released by his Fan Club in the late '80s). Check that stuff out and you'll understand why people say it's early black metal. The demo version of "Zombie" sounds like a song from Under a Funeral Moon.... After the departure of Paul Chain they became more and more melodic and poppy through the years... But the early years were very harsh. Also the song "Black Mass" by the "new" Death SS is actually pretty dark.
Even if the riffs have a black metal feel to them! Its not the 'classic' type of black metal riffs, but still the type of riffs you hear in black metal.

Yeah they pretty much say a much. SLightly different take musically (and clearly a bigger budget) but you can definately see the influence.
