Custom BMW R 80 builds are no strangers to the motorcycle world, but it’s rare to see one that stands out with a unique and refreshing design. Enter this incredible custom creation, crafted by the talented Massimo of La Motocicletta in Italy. Starting with a 1983 BMW R 80, Massimo combined vintage style with a modern twist to create a bike that blends the best of both worlds-classic looks with cutting-edge performance and handling upgrades.
The project began with a complete teardown of the original bike. Massimo knew the R 80’s boxer-twin engine had potential, so he completely rebuilt it, using high-spec internals from an R 100. To help the engine breathe better, the intake system was equipped with replacement Bing carburetors and aftermarket pod filters. For the exhaust, a heat-wrapped system was added, terminating in a pair of chrome-plated reverse megaphone mufflers that not only enhance the performance but also deliver an unmistakable sound.
Taking things a step further, Massimo gave the bike a new bobber-style subframe, complete with a sleek black leather saddle. He then attached a circular LED taillight under the seat, and repositioned the license plate to a swingarm-mounted bracket. As if that wasn’t enough, Massimo built a new electronics box from scratch, neatly installed between the bike’s frame center posts.
Handling and ride quality were improved with the addition of a new swingarm from an R 80 GS, paired with an adjustable aftermarket shock absorber for better performance on any terrain. The front end received a modern makeover with custom billet aluminum triple clamps holding a set of inverted forks. Premium Tokico calipers and floating brake rotors ensure that this bike stops as well as it goes.
The bike’s laced wheels, wrapped in dual-purpose tires, are finished with chrome plating that adds a touch of elegance. At the front, a vintage-style headlight and LED blinkers provide excellent visibility. The cockpit features a low-rise LSL handlebar, a multi-function gauge, and CNC-machined foot pegs to complete the modernized yet classic feel.
Finally, the standout feature is the minimalistic bodywork. A retro-inspired fuel tank and simple custom fender were both wrapped in a stunning blue base color. The tank is adorned with black horizontal stripes and classic BMW lettering, giving the bike a unique and timeless appearance.
