    this video made me want to get into a midget more than i already did, my grandpa has had one previously (around the 70s and 80s) but he sold it when my dad was born, now that im getting close to getting a job and hes been out of a job for a few years, i really want to buy an older mg and restore it with him, my end goal is go give the mg to him and for him to cherrish it as if he was in the 80s again, anyone think thats a good idea?

    Sounds sweet, no timing chain rattles, tappets set and not too smokey other than burning off gunk. I'd say it's either low milage or been rebuilt at some time in its life.

    I had the same 1976 Midget as yours. And prior to that I owned a 1971 Midget, with chrome bumpers and wire wheels. Both were the same mustard colour. I have been searching for years to purchase another Midget. Thanks for showing your video! It brought back so many wonderful memories.

    Around 1974 MG started offering cars with really different colors. They just tried to improve sales I guess. We have a 75 B color is citron. The car colors are a bit more accepted now. Still can’t compare with the dark green and deep red colors. Got a B and. Midget.Always happy to see these cars being restored.

    I had one of these in UK in the early 80’s. 1977 model with 1275cc engine was great. Loads of fun to drive in all weathers, heater was fantastic. I think the “baby poop brown” colour was officially called British Leyland Savannah. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

    My whole family has owned or still own MGs. They are great little cars if you know how to own one. They were enthusiasts cars when they rolled off the line, but before the MX-5, was the best selling 'real' sports car of all time. Thanks for sharing this.

    I had a 1976 years ago, but it was in mint condition (back int the early 1990s). Loved the fact I had to use the Choke when cold, and once warmed up ran like a champ. We took a BUNCH of long trips with it - we're in Syracuse, and we went to Cape Cod, New Hampshire, Vermont, and throughout the northern NY territory. I was a death trap, but there was such character buzzing along at high speeds, the motor screaming, on the highways on those long trips(as well as a full set of tools for repairs that came along the way). Ah the nostalgia.........

      To meet US federal regulations, large black plastic-covered bumpers were added to the front and rear and the ride heights were increased. The increased ride heights affected handling, and anti-roll bars were added to help with the higher centre of gravity. I think these changes totally ruined a beautiful little car, ironically the little red "parts car" in this video.

    The 1275 was the best engine in the BMC Mini range. Very tuneable, very reliable with correct servicing. I had a 1275 GT motor grafted into a Mini pick up truck, a little rocket ship.. Saw a version of the Midget you have there with the full transverse engine set up front wheel drive from the Mini. Factory built experimental model, several produced but never went into full production.

    Always nice to see an old Brit across the pond. The 1275cc is the Mini GT/Clubman/Cooper engine and is as bulletproof as they come, if you can source one the MG Metro Turbo turbo charger bolts onto this exact engine and that was pretty manic to drive as it had quite good torque bands in each gear, think it was the smallest one Garrett produced. The one to try is the Triumph GT6 or the V8'd MGB both exceptional cars and you can drop a Triumph Stag V8 into the GT6 or a Rover 3.5 V8.

    You got a good deal there. I have driven a 1500 MG Midget and it is equally terrifying and fun at the same time. You feel every bump in the road and it is like you are driving with backside just about 50mm above the road surface which gives you a real rush as going 30mph feels like 70mph. Having the hard top makes a big difference in making the car usable in all seasons, as I have yet to find a MG soft top that does not leak with the water usually ending up in your lap. Have fun guys they certainly don't make them that any more.

    • @BudgetBuildz
      @BudgetBuildz  4 роки тому

      We never put the top back on ours, because we knew it would simply be a fair weather care. Now that we have the hard top we can drive it all the time! They really are a blast aren’t they! 😊

    Carb and choke cleaner is just about the worst thing to spray into a carb to start an engine, because it will instantly strip any lubricant off the bores, at the exact moment that you need lubricant the most. Pouring petrol down the carb is almost as bad, but petrol still offers a certain amount of lubrication. The only really safe way of starting a car in this way is some kind of ether spray with an upper cylinder lubricant, so that the bores don't operate without oil for those critical first few seconds.

    Damn! A lotta hate for the SU carbs! I know with the Datsun L series engines the downdraft Weber isn't even an upgrade. It's more like a band aid for folks who don't want to tune the SU's.

  • @6petrolhead6

    They do run quite well on 1" 1/4 twin SU carbs but they do need balancing
