Torque Tuning with BROADHEADS

  • Torque Tuning is a method of gaining forgiveness in your archery set up by moving your sight or your arrow rest forward or backward to cancel out any misalignments due to torqueing your grip. Broadheads throw a wrench into the strategy however since different broadheads will plane varying amounts based on their geometries. Torque tuning with broadheads do seem to change your optimal results compared to field points. Tuning like this would help boost forgiveness of your hunting set up, although there are other tuning areas of greater importance for clean arrow flight. I recommend doing this after you've achieved clean arrow flight. If you ended up moving your rest, re-test your arrow flight.

    As an engineer myself, that was a very good video, Garrett. As a bowhunter, you are getting pretty far down the rabbit hole! Keep it fun, keep it simple, and have a safe and successful season.

      Yea, I'd agree with both of you. I had the same issue with my V31 and just ignored it, because I was never torquing the grip enough that it really mattered. This project finally allowed me to test that theory regarding braodheads. I'd venture to guess that for people with poor grip control, they'd benefit more from firstly tightening up the technique.

    The MBG mountain lite back can get pretty close. You would sacrifice the inline of the pic mount but I would bet it gets you close on your distance. Good video!

      So, interestingly, I have an ML3 base as well, and when you measure it out it's really not too much shorter. You can see it at 4:35 compared to the modified EZV. When I was initially designing a 3d printed part for the Black Gold, it was essentially a shortened ML3. I went through two or three revisions of it before realizing I could do the shortened picatinny design that I ended up putting in the video.

    I've been using the ezv sight and it has really helped me with target panic issues. I can comfortably take deer to thirty yards and fill my tags. It really works great!

    I’ve never tried this on my hunting setup. I’m sure it would/might? be relevant at like 30+ yards. Under that I’m thinking a little torque might put the hit 2-3” off the mark? On my target bow I have spent a few hours on different days playing with this and this experiment will help you get your grip correctly. I’m not an engineer, just been shooting for 50+ years. There’s really not much I haven’t tried. I may check my hunting bow out after seeing this vid. 👍👍

      I think I'd agree that for most people who know what they're doing with a bow, it's unlikely to make a huge difference at normal, close hunting ranges because it'd be very abnormal to torque a bow so much that you would get one of those wild impacts. And for someone newer that doesn't have good grip control and could benefit, they'd likely benefit way more from first improving technique and consistency in their shooting.

    One thing that drives me nuts about most slider sights, and especially pic mount sights, is how far out they place the housing away from the riser. Not just for torque tuning, but also for peep size. For Hunting I want a big 1/4 or 7/32 peep, but have found that in most cases I have to go with a 3/16 because I can't mount the sight close enough.

    Love your videos brother. But from a engineering prospective, if the sight is directly above the arrow rest, this would eliminate the most. You can simply test this by just holding your bow (without being at full draw) then simply torque the bow, watching the pins. You can simply see that the more direct over, the less the pin movement. Try mounting the sight on the back of the riser.

      So I'd imagine that might be the case if both of those were mounted above the pivot point of the grip, but if they're both swinging the same direction behind the grip, I'm not sure we can assume that would cancel out the effects of the movements. If it did, I probably wouldn't have gotten the results I did in the video. I do remember seeing a site a while back that was intended to be mounted behind the riser and marketed for exactly what you're saying.

      @@DIYSportsman I think we are in the same page. But like u said, if the sight was directly above the rest and you torqued the bow, the sight and the rest would remain in alignment with each other. So your assessment is correct, the closer to the pivot point (arrow rest) the less that torque would appear.

    Does FOC change these results? What was your arrow weight?

      Arrow weight here was 450 grains. I wouldn't imagine FOC would play a hule role, but there could be some influence with how quickly your out of tune shots stabilize for a given broadhead and vane combo.

    Hi Thanks for the video. So basically, the 3 " pin distance helped with torqing in general it seems considering we all will torque either left or right. I don't see how shortening the distance will actually hurt.I believe you hit on something that might help archers, especially in hunting situations where you are more prone to torque.Thsnk Again

      Just remember, on my scenario that's what worked out. But it will vary based on bow riser geometry, rest position, and probably things like draw length or cable rod influences. I know on target bows it's not uncommon to have to move the rest backward or sight forward in comparison.

    What size peep are you running with the sight in so close?

      I have a 7/32 total peep. Keep in mind my sight housing ring is also the 2" version. The sizing is good in daylight but of course changes a little in low light. 3/16" might be better for low light alignment but a little tight in broad daylight.

    what do you think of the ezv after all the time you have used it? i have hard time seeing pins older i get.

      I think it's a decent option for hunting, especially for guys who like you, are having issues with standard pins. I never really got fully comfortable using it to range with. I often just used the tic marks and shot it that way. For more technical (longer range or steep angles) I think there are better options.

      Kind of. It isn't quite the same, but the forward/back positioning of your shelf hump or rest can impact your left/right forgiveness with torque. In the Push precision tuning course they do talk about this in more detail.
