An amazing concert. I had no idea BBC Radio 2 had paid tribute to Gedda's wonderful career like this. It was a rare happening as I can only remembering them according that honour to one other opera singer , the soprano Valerie Masterson.
Early in 1998 I attended a recital of Gedda‘s in Hamburg. Then & in this performance here his instrument was still in remarkable shape not only for a tenor In his early 70s, but in comparison with many of his contemporary colleagues as well. By the time I saw him, the roles accompanying these arias were, I believe, no longer a part of his stage repertoire, however the timbre of his fine instrument was nearly as beautiful as ever, superb head voice & all.
