    True story. I went to my first wedding. I wanted a drink. I ordered this. It was fantastic. I went to work the next day and could not remember what this drink was called. I told my boss, “It was Russian and its white.” Still one of my favorites.

  • @Soundpolitic

    Great video & recipes as always! The comparison to the Alexander family of cocktails is apt. I could never get my White Russian recipe quite right (they always seems to be a bit boozy and unintegrated, and I never liked it with heavy cream or milk) until it clicked with a different favorite cocktail of mine: the Brandy Milk Punch.
    The classic recipe for that one is two ounces of half-and-half, a standard shot of brandy, and a single ounce of simple syrup, shaken with ice and strained over fresh ice, perhaps garnished with a dusting of nutmeg. I found this to be delicious with other spirits like bourbon, rye, and rum, but never considered using flavor-neutral vodka.
    Then it hit me: the White Russian is a Milk Punch using vodka as a neutral base spirit and swapping out the simple syrup for flavorsome (and slightly proofy) coffee liqueur. I plugged the ingredients into the ratio, shook them together with all my might, and strained out a perfect frothy White Russian. I've made them that way ever since. Give it a try and see how it compares!

    • @DistinguishedSpirits
      @DistinguishedSpirits  3 роки тому

      Glad you liked the video. Confirming your recipe: 1.5 oz vodka, 1 oz coffee liqueur, 2 oz half & half. If so, I tried your ratio in my testing of this drink for this video. The only difference is that I didn't shake it or strain it.

    this one can definitely differ in stiffness. i’ve seen 2 oz vodka & 1 of coffee liqueur with just a small topoff of half and half (far too stiff for me, it’s a pile driver). or a 1:1 combo of the liqueur and vodka with around an ounce of the half and half. black russian varies too.

    Dude! Extra Film Noir Points for calling it "Los Angles County" -- With out the "J" sound the Networks [with HQs on the Easy Coast] forced all announcers and actors to pronounce it with. If you listen to early Dragnets, it's "Los Ankhless''. But later forTV, Network made Jack Webb say "This is the city, Los AnJeles California...''
    All the early Noir films used the hard G in the place name. When I lived in LA in the late '60s, some locals still said it that way.

    • @DistinguishedSpirits
      @DistinguishedSpirits  3 роки тому

      I wish that’s what I was alluding to. That was more of a direct reference to the VO in Big Lebowski. However, the Coens were certainly influenced by film noir in the bulk of their work, not just Lebowski, so it’s probably a reference of a reference.

    • @HootOwl513
      @HootOwl513 3 роки тому

      @@DistinguishedSpirits Well it works. I like your vocal quality. Do you do professional Voice Overs? Your passion for quality cocktails makes me think you're not a professional bartender. Big fan of Tiki drinks, but I'm going to mixologist hell for using Cinnamon Schnapps instead of Donn's #4 in my Zombi. Funny, you can't buy white grapefruit in stores, but in the suburbs of Tucson, people put cartons of the surplus fruit in front of their houses, free.

    • @DistinguishedSpirits
      @DistinguishedSpirits  3 роки тому +1

      Professional VO? No. I’m just the cheapest voice I can afford.
      Yes, you are going to mixologist hell for that. But the stairway to heaven couldn’t be much easier: make it yourself (ua-cam.com/video/LHoCSuYkKck/v-deo.html).
      And white grapefruit is super rare in the supermarket, even in Los An-GLISS. The best place to get them is at farmers markets (or off neighbors’ trees). And if you live in the southwest, you have no excuse! After all, you wanna avoid the fires of mixologist hell.

    How would you describe the difference between Mr. Black and St. George NOLA coffee liquer, as I know that is another favorite from your past videos.

    • @tombaker8500
      @tombaker8500 3 роки тому +2

      Mr Black is big big coffee, so holds up well in cocktails (as well as by itself). So while they both say "coffee", they're actually pretty different liquids. NOLA is tasty as, but has a big hit of chicory and less coffee. So it makes cocktails quite "woody". I am biased obviously, but Mr Black for me ;-)

    • @DistinguishedSpirits
      @DistinguishedSpirits  3 роки тому +1

      Basically what Tom said. Both are pretty dry for coffee liqueurs, which is important so you can control the sweetness in your drink. You can always add sweetness but you don't wanna be a spot where you wanna take it away. Both very flavorful. Good mouthfeel. Both have a pleasing amount of bitterness, but that's were the difference comes in. NOLA's bitterness mostly comes from the chicory, which is kind of woody and herbal. Mr. Black's bitterness comes from the espresso-like roast. However, overall impression, I'd say the Mr. Black leaves a more chocolatey impression and the NOLA leaves a little more oaky one.
