Following up on this. I went through with getting this board. Namely because the Gigabyte options would conflict with my H1v2 (due to the audio port). This board is more than enough for me. I literally use 3 usb ports and nothing else. The BIOS is familiar to me as I came from an Asus B550i and adjusting everything was super easy.

Like you I think the B series will crown supreme. Although I love my X670E-I, I don’t use it fully, especially in my SFF builds.
To be honest, I still only use gen 4 m.2 with because they generate way less heat and use less energy. The speed is still good enough for regular work stuff and gaming.

Any thoughts at a glance on the Gigabyte X870I that's at the same price point in the US? I've been leaning towards that - i have the same question, the white Gigabyte X870 ice is at the moment even cheaper than the Asus b850 in Austria… greetings from Österreich! :-)
I am.planning a build with the 9950x3d and 5090. I have a brand-new B650E-I, which I can still return. Should I pay 130 USD more and get the B850 instead? I don't care mich about Wifi and PCIE5 SSD support. Any other reasons to chose the B850? Maybe better support/bios updates from Asus in the future?
TBH If you can wait for reviews to drop. On paper it doesn't seem as though there is that much of a diff besides price and an extra pcie x5 lane but hey testing can prove the board might be better then a B650. We shall see.
I'm returning mine because I'm still within my return period and the price is the same. If it's $130 more? I wouldn't bother. Everything is almost the same with the exception of PCIE4 4x -> PCIE5 4x for one of the m2, the clear bios button at the back (which I was surprised it didnt have), theres also WiFi7 but its still realtek which you can just buy an intel one for what like $20-30 and its much better. The B650E-I already has the latest bios which is the same, only thing different would be like chipset drivers etc... IMO this looks uglier than the last version but I'm only getting it because its newer and I'm still within the return period/same price. If it was $50 more I probably wouldn't bother in my case.
Basically the exact same situation here as it was with 650/670 ASUS ITX boards a year ago - there's simply no necessity to go for a higher end model 🤷🏻♂️
For $20 I would do it just for the clear CMOS button, but you also get the nicer touchpoints plus newer Wifi spec and faster m.2. If you ever have to do "minor surgery" on your build to get to your header the $20 will be well spent. I actually had to do that once and because I did a custom loop with the B650E-I (in the T1 Ref the rad sits over the board), it was not something I want to repeat.
@@shusui9665 I'd like to add that pricing on this board has been a common knowledge for some time now, you can't just say "ohh I expect it will be 225" when everyone already knows it's nowhere near that. It just looks silly.
Seems like a decent board and will try and review. At glance of the specs the Gigabyte's fastest port is 10gbps with only one USB-C form factor, no clear CMOS button, M.2 setup is 1 gen 5 + 1 gen 4, two fan headers requiring a dongle (total 3). One thing they have done well is passive cooling on the power delivery/chipset. I think for $20 difference the Strix board does offer good value though.
@MachinesMore thx for response . i was wondering how the vrm cooling is. i want to order but cant decide between the asus or aorus both are available in my country. the price difference is not huge its similar here.
Last board to do that well IMO was the MSI Z690-I. One thing is that storage size has gotten a lot cheaper so board partners may be moving away from three on the ITX form factor.
Improvements over the B650E-I seem non-existent. With B650E-I boards readily available well below MSRP I can't imagine anyone paying more for this B850-I?
@@sentryion3106 Good point. The Asus B650E is the same price on Newegg as the Asus B850i right now at 299 USD. You could find some variants in pricing with Gigabyte, Asrock, etc but yea looks like the B850 boards are close in price to the B650 boards for now.
No coil whine reports? Previous ASUS models were plagued by this issue so it would be great to hear - or better not - your thoughts on this topic. Thanks
Better than x870? Hardly. Lack of usb4 = hard pass. Plus the rear m.2 gets no benefit from gen5 since it simply can't handle the heat. Either pay more for the x870-i, or go with the gigabyte itx x870 in the ~$300 range (although it only has 1 usb4 port).
After the chipset fan on my last Asus board started making noise and Asus refused to sell me another fan, I learned my lesson (besides never buy another Asus board): no fans on the motherboard. Do other manufacturer's B850-I boards have fans as well?
You couldn't swap out the fan on your own on the Asus board? It was a 60mm? no other manufacturer has announced / released their B850 boards as of yet. Correction: per another commenter Gigabyte dropped their B850i board. I didn't even see it announced. Just popped for sale on newegg. Not seeing a heatsink fan. Nope. Fan present on VRM heatsink. Immediately ruled out. I will never compromise on this. Building in such an obvious failure point is absurd. They can just design the heatsink properly, but they don't, because it couldn't carry their logo.
You do realize that just removing that fan leaves you with same style of passive heatsink everyone is using? There is no issue unplugging it (At least if you are not pushing wattage to something crazy like more than 200 watts which you shouldn't do on a passive VRM anyway)
@@ivey77426 OK. If that "passive heatsink" design is so good why didn't noctua copy it for their passive CPU cooler? I think you just didn't understand what was being said.
@@ivey77426 Well designed VRM heatsinks don't cost $40 more than poorly designed ones. I’ve been wanting a better ITX board! Without all the extra frills like the daughter sata board thing, and that silly command hub. And the double gen 5 SSD ports is great for longevity.
Why the vast majority of the AM5 ITX board only have 2 (TWO) SATA ports, unlike the AM4 where it is 4? On Pcpartpicker, there are literally only two options! While all of AM4 ITX have four! I have been expecting these upcoming B series AM5 would finally fix it, but, NOPE!
So 1 more fan header and 1 more rgb header over the B650E-I. Just get the B650E-I as long as you can for a reasonable price. These new boards are such a bullshit show. It's even the exact same design with just some changes on the coloring.
TBF you do have the new mounting system for the gpu and ssds w/ the new board, but I hear ya. I've always preferred Asus's software (minus the bloatware) to other manufacturers and their fan header placements on their itx boards specifically but that Asus tax....can sting.

New to the AM5, is this one a good pair with the 7800x 3d?
Does it have any flaws like the B650E-I itx mobo?
Do you recommend this over the B650E-I?
Any concerns with the VRM heatsink conflicting with CPU coolers such as the NH-L12S?
Nope! It's sculpted away nicely and hasn't been a major concern in the B series.
@@MachinesMore Great to hear, thanks for all your work!
Any thoughts at a glance on the Gigabyte X870I that's at the same price point in the US? I've been leaning towards that - i have the same question, the white Gigabyte X870 ice is at the moment even cheaper than the Asus b850 in Austria… greetings from Österreich! :-)
I should get the x670e-i or B850-i ?
B850-i for most builds, for sure.
Any thoughts at a glance on the Gigabyte X870I that's at the same price point in the US? I've been leaning towards that
Went to a micro center equivalent near me and the rep recommended asus since gigabyte was turning up with issues recently for them
I am.planning a build with the 9950x3d and 5090. I have a brand-new B650E-I, which I can still return. Should I pay 130 USD more and get the B850 instead?
I don't care mich about Wifi and PCIE5 SSD support. Any other reasons to chose the B850? Maybe better support/bios updates from Asus in the future?
I wouldn't. Especially since you don't care about the minor upgrades
If you got it for $130 less then no way!
Does it need a BIOS update to support the 9800X3D?
It has flash back so even kf it doea it will be simple.
I have 2 questions ‐ does this board have coil and would I be able to use m.2 4.0
is this compatible with the 7600x?
If you have 2 gen 5.0 M.2 installed, do you still have full 5.0x16 lanes?
Basically the exact same situation here as it was with 650/670 ASUS ITX boards a year ago - there's simply no necessity to go for a higher end model 🤷🏻♂️
3*m2
I have fully installed the B650e-i, but I am still within the return window. Should I swap to the B850i for $20 more?
For $20 I would do it just for the clear CMOS button, but you also get the nicer touchpoints plus newer Wifi spec and faster m.2. If you ever have to do "minor surgery" on your build to get to your header the $20 will be well spent. I actually had to do that once and because I did a custom loop with the B650E-I (in the T1 Ref the rad sits over the board), it was not something I want to repeat.
300+ EUR is "more affordable" now. OK.
350 in germany
@@shusui9665 Ah, affordable it is.
@ivey77426 its very expensive you are right
@@shusui9665 I'd like to add that pricing on this board has been a common knowledge for some time now, you can't just say "ohh I expect it will be 225" when everyone already knows it's nowhere near that. It just looks silly.
It's is if the other option is way more.
except i need usb 4
Any point going from a B650E-I to this one?
No, not really unless you want/need the second gen5 m.2.
@@MachinesMore I think no one wants a gen5 m.2 ssd on the backsite of an itx board :D
Wow it has an audio port and mic unlike the 870 board which is a total gimmick
thx for all infos. the b850i aorus pro os released too. will there be a video about it too?
Lovely. Will it fit a Noctua L12S though?!
nice review and real nice looking mobo but hesitant to ever buy ASUS again
Cheers!
Dang, was hoping it would have 3 M.2 slots :(
Last board to do that well IMO was the MSI Z690-I. One thing is that storage size has gotten a lot cheaper so board partners may be moving away from three on the ITX form factor.
@@MachinesMore Yeah I guess so, Im just a hoarder when it comes to memory. Already gonna go with 2x 4TB nvme's and was hoping for a 3rd.
Improvements over the B650E-I seem non-existent. With B650E-I boards readily available well below MSRP I can't imagine anyone paying more for this B850-I?
I don’t see them under msrp anywhere at the moment. For the same price I am not complaining with the changes
@@sentryion3106 Good point. The Asus B650E is the same price on Newegg as the Asus B850i right now at 299 USD. You could find some variants in pricing with Gigabyte, Asrock, etc but yea looks like the B850 boards are close in price to the B650 boards for now.
There were quite a few holiday deals on the 650E-I which makes it attractive next to the 850, as of now the price is steady though.
No coil whine reports? Previous ASUS models were plagued by this issue so it would be great to hear - or better not - your thoughts on this topic. Thanks
I haven't heard it but I have only tested one. Haven't experienced with the B650E-I either.
£350!!! LOL.
I bought the Asus B650e-i Gaming for £170 3 weeks ago. These new x870 boards are a con😂
Cant wai to get it in 2027!😂
Better than x870?
Doesn't seem to be promoted in their product page for the board @Gigabyte. Looks good. $275 usd though.
@@ivey77426 they are starting to roll out heavy now.
@@trembledust6819 Nope. Couldn't find a replacement. I tried linking to the video I made about the problem, but UA-cam just deletes the whole comment the link is in. But, in case you're interested, the video is called: "Chipset Fan on Asus ROG Strix X570 Crosshair VIII Hero (non-wifi) Motherboard".

Oh. Its THAT type of fan smh. I see why you had issues finding a replacement. That is one of the main reasons I avoided x570 boards specifically Asus when they were announced cause they had the chipset fans when some where saying it wasn't necessary. I think when Gigabyte released their high end x570 board and it didn't have a chipset fan people rejoiced lol. I did some research and found some possible replacements but yea on 400+ usd board you really shouldn't have to do all that imo.
Asus wouldn't sell me replacement parts either ironically on a Crosshair x470 board way back when. Honestly w/ the x570 board I myself would probably would of just RMA'd the board especially if they offered cross shipping so the downtime in not having a rig was minimized. That use to be a thing with their high end boards back in the day but I don't see it offered as much or at all these days. smh.
Sorry for the issues you ran into.
@@nommindymple6241 Ok thats weird. I posted a response to your comment but now its gone. I linked video I found that you mentioned. Hmm UA-cam really doesn't want traction on that vid lol.
Just to summarize what I said...watched vid. Ugh @ that fan. I see why you have issues with finding a replacement. Asus refused to sell me replacement part ironically on a Crosshair x470 board I had. I did find some replacement fans but yea for a 400+ usd board imo you shouldn't have too.
Is the wifi 7 a real „wifi 7“ or just a downgraded version? Yes, its a difference!
B850 mATX SFF FTW
seen a few already up on newegg. Decent prices. Sub 200 usb. Gigabyte has their Aorus Elite ice matx board. No black variant as of yet I can see.
TUF B850 mATX review coming right after CES!
The previous b650e-i did cost 300€+ for a long time
"As for why they don't design a proper fin stack for VRM I don't know"
I do know; manufacturers have all decided that VRM heatsinks should be used to visually disguise the rear IO, instead of effectively cooling the VRM.
I’ve been wanting a better ITX board! Without all the extra frills like the daughter sata board thing, and that silly command hub. And the double gen 5 SSD ports is great for longevity.
yup no FPS-II or Hive here. Just a well thought out board.
so the asrock b850 itx is better :)
$300 straight from Asus estore.... Interesting.
Indeed, was asking for a number earlier but probably too much going on with all the launches.
Miss
Why the vast majority of the AM5 ITX board only have 2 (TWO) SATA ports, unlike the AM4 where it is 4?
On Pcpartpicker, there are literally only two options! While all of AM4 ITX have four!
I have been expecting these upcoming B series AM5 would finally fix it, but, NOPE!
£365 in uk lmfao x870i £400 what a joke.
You should disable auto-translating of video title and description. It's not nearly accurate enough to make sense.
thanks for the info. TBH I don't check the translation (but should!).
Way too expensive
Agree. 150 tops.
Damn $300? For an extra USB-C port? :D
nice board but if you have stretch budget 😞 ther are cheaper and better options
So 1 more fan header and 1 more rgb header over the B650E-I. Just get the B650E-I as long as you can for a reasonable price. These new boards are such a bullshit show.
It's even the exact same design with just some changes on the coloring.
TBF you do have the new mounting system for the gpu and ssds w/ the new board, but I hear ya. I've always preferred Asus's software (minus the bloatware) to other manufacturers and their fan header placements on their itx boards specifically but that Asus tax....can sting.
The 650E-I is a solid board, ultimately it comes down to price/availability. You do get the nicer touchpoint and extra gen 5 m.2 but that seems less applicable to the general user ATM.
Asus's ITX fan header placement is the best.
ITX you pay MORE for LESS 😂
"The more you buy, the more you save!"
ew asus
The MB looks good with good spec. Although since its asus, it probably going to cost a lot here.
