Two types of kerosene heater burner designs - older type is flame spreader burner, newer type is catalytic burner design. Also, radiant and convection design for heat circulation. Great video!
The flame spreader design is the less efficient style. I believe Perfection Stove Company developed the catalytic burner design for their short chimney wicked stove burners.

Stumbled on this, I just bought a kerosene heater about 3 or 3 weeks ago. I use it in my living room sporadically, for about an hour & one half. I do plan on getting one of those little fans, but I REALLY like the big one. Winter in the desert can get a bit nippy, so it's not going to be used THAT much. Thanks for all your tips.
I was lucky to find one and bought it on Ebay. Someone from California posted it on EBay. Although, it a second hand, it was well looked after. It comes with black round plastic case to restore when not in use. It was expensive plus postage to Australia.. we are heading to winter here in Australia .The package had arrived 11th of April 23.. I know it’s expensive but I’m happy that I have got one. Cheers..
Some smart ideas here! You’ve got me thinking about sterling engine fans that use heat to power the fan without ever converting to electricity, making them much more efficient. I’ll have to get one of these old surplus military ones and convert it
I've used those before. It will heat a good sized room fine. And just leave bedroom doors open. 20,000 BTU. I didn't have a fan. The fires are from where people set them. Don't put near a window with curtains, furniture etc.
Wonderful videos glad I found them. Kerosene seems like such an economical fuel source for cooking and heating. I think it gets forgotten about with it being more of an "old school" method compared to our Mr buddy propane heaters, msr isobutane stoves etc. Ir can be a bit daunting looking at a lot of these used older stoves and tech for someone whose never seen it before. But for the cost of kerosene and how far your dollar goes its such an excellent option. I'm in the middle of Canada in a bigger city so unfortunately I don't own a wood stove. It gets extremely cold here in the prairies with minus 30 celcius or minys 40 celcius isn't abnormal in the winter. My plans for temporary heating before was just a Mr buddy running of a 20l with a fuel filter and hose. Adding a kerosene heater and hopefully a stove soon will be fantastic. I've already got some feuerhand oil lamps.
I used my woodstove fans for my 9000 BTU kerosene heaters and I noticed that even though they work just fine, the kerosene heaters get hotter than what the woodstove fan temperature is rated for. I read in your comment section that the woodstove fan will eventually burn up because of this excessive heat and for this reason, I have decided to use my ceiling fan instead the woodstove fan and save my woodstove fans for power outage use only.
I have two tower style heaters, both of which were given to me. My Kero Sun Omni 105, given to me by my dad many years ago, looks and burns like new. My other one, a Corona DKC 22, was given to me by my buddy, also many years ago. I don't have the manual for either. As I was trying to take apart and clean the Corona, I couldn't remove the wick knob. Is there something I need to do besides just pulling on it? The Kero Sun knob pulls off without much trouble. Just found your channel. I enjoy them.

I have a the model 2301 heater, got mine in 1999 use it when it really gets cold, I have never had a problem with mine, I use the long reach matchs, 75 matchs to a box
😪There was a Old Man that I knew that called the Police because the flame🔥was to high and he did not know what to do, heater was New to him. This Cop showed up and tried to push the kerosene heater with a broom to get it outside of this mans garage. The Cop knocked it over and caught the mans garage and home on fire. 🔥🔥Total loss. 15 years of kerosene devices in use is enough to offer advice. Batteries quickly die and the holder rusts. I get cheap boxes of matches at Dollar Tree. Long type butane lighters that are refillable are easy to maintain and refill.
I love my stove but can’t stand the smell. I really can’t smell any difference between K1 and diesel. My research tells me that diesel will burn longer, hotter, and cheaper than K1. I would love to use this stove more but the smell is a real turn off. Any suggestions? Love to see how you cook on K1
Which kind of stove? If the wick is level and clean, it burns cleaner. If the flame spreader or catalytic converter (depending on the type pf stove) is dirty, it will smell. Also clean the flat land area on each side of the wick. Finally I did see one heater that nothing I did would stop the smell. Something about the initial construction that was off that I never figured out. I just replaced it. I used a Kerosun Radiant 10 and then a 36 for many winters in my shop. Only problem was the limit of 10,000 Btu's when it was really cold. I increased its efficiency with a Kero-Blow (sp?) fan over the top of the heater.
I notice black smoke when flame is too high or too low? What is the secret for not rendering black smoke? Just let it run for 20 mins outside and bring it in? Sweet spot appears to be fire 1/2 inch below top of ring
Sounds like your wick has burnt uneven. With a level wick, the flame can be 1/2" above the top ring for maximum heat w/o smoke. When cold, a wick kerosene heater smokes but should clear up shortly when the flame propagates all around the wick.
The problem I see is that 1 gallon of kerosene only lasts maybe half a day. So if you had to use the heater for at least 21 days since the roads were closed as you say, that means you must have had over 40 gallons of kerosene on hand. Do you always keep that much kerosene on hand? How long will the kerosene still be good if several years go by without needing to use it?
The pink stuff for the Laser heaters, I have 3 x 275 gallon tanks and for the clear, I have a 55 gallon blue plastic drum. Kept away from light, air and moisture, kerosene can last for many years. My oldest Kero is from 1998!
What model could you recommend for not pinned wick kerosene heater? Please help me as I was paying $1500 monthly for my electric studio type apartment. Thanks in advance, appreciate it.

I can't find that surplus fan anywhere online? anybody have any links? I am using a cast iron fry pan on top to keep the heat from going up to the ceiling, but that fan looks like a great idea.

On this type of Heater, you get a Diffusion flame that is Yellow / Orange. To obtain a Yellow / Orange flame, fuel (Kerosene) is on one side of the reaction zone and oxygen is on the other side. There is then an area on the fuel side of the flame where there is fuel that is gasified with no O2. This area is at a high temperature and the heat causes the Kerosene gas molecules to crack and Polymerize (small molecules forming larger molecules). Two types of molecules are formed. One, are light molecules that are burned away and then you have the heavy molecules made up of carbon soot. The carbon molecules move upward to the outer edge of the flame where there is Oxygen available. There the carbon molecules, are heated to a high temperature, glowing a bright yellow (incandescence) as they are burned, producing the familiar yellow light.

2.5 gallons of 1K kerosene at Fleet Farm in Wisconsin costs $20.99; I haven't used my heater yet but read that 2.5 gallons will burn about 15 hours; in one 24/7 week that would take 11.2 containers of kerosene, costing approximately $235.00 in fuel. That's freak'n expensive!!!
You are better off purchasing in bulk or from a "locked" pump. In my area, Northern NY, a "Locked" pump price is $3.35 per gallon. Bulk, 100 gallon minimum is $2.95 per gallon.
Kerosene is $4.29 at Speedway if you have one in your area that has K1 at the pump. It still adds up, but buying from Menards or any other retail outlet by the gallon is highway robbery. Hell, even pump prices are but they have us by the gonads..."Where else are you gonna get it from?"
Where I am k1 kerosene is prohibitively expensive and only available at box stores. There are ppl that are using ultra low supher #2 diesel w a pint of 91 percent isopropyl alcohol. The wick must be cotton to prevent clogging. Exhaust is similar to k1 as far as I have read. The cost is about a fourth of k1.
If you can find one. they used to be $250. Now I have seen them go as high as $750 which is crazy. But it is supply and demand. They have not been available for a few years now. So it is NOS or used.
There are some places in the country that there are few gas stations with the "locked" pump. You could check with local fuel dealers as to the current Kerosene price in bulk for water clear and the minimum that they will deliver. Sometimes a simple 55 gallon Blue plastic drum will suffice.
This is very helpful information, but it doesn't help showing the kettlefan since it not available. Please show us another type of fan that is available that would help to distribute the heat.
Kerosene is expensive compared to Diesel... I have found videos of people using diesel by adding an oz of 90% Isophrel Alcohol and using it for years... What say you?
I wish I did. I purchased mine when they were out on the surplus market. Now I see them here and there but for outrageous prices. Do Google searches, have a saved search on Ebay and be prepared to spend a lot of money. 'Fraid I open a Pandora's box on these Kettle fans! :(

When I got into Kerosene, it was quite cheap. Then it became expensive and people started dumping their Laser Kerosene heaters for Propane. Then when Kerosene was cheap again and Propane was expensive, why didn't the same people dump their Propane heaters for Kerosene again?? You stick with what you have because of the great expense in changing your heating system every few years depending on the price of fuel. I can store a year and a half of Kerosene for winter heating and my Kerosene water heater. So, I am not affected by seasonal market pricing. Can't do that with Natural Gas, Propane, Electricity, etc. Plus for an extended electrical power outage, if you were smart enough to have Kerosene on hand, that is better than empty Propane tanks with the stores closed or the Natural Gas flow is stopped because there is no power to run the pumps.
Some models of Kerosene heater have riveted pins that insert into the wick raising mechanism. With this type of wick and heater, you can't raise the wick to compensate for the burn down of the wick over time. If the wick and heater use a sock type, you just disengage the wick from the raising mechanism and then raise the wick back to the factory specification. This gives you additional life from the wick.
Glad I found your video. I have been looking at kerosene heaters. Used one in Japan years ago and I don't know why they have a bad rap. How do know if it has a pinned wick or not? or did you mean to buy one to with the heater that is not pinned.
It depends on the heater. But on average 8 - 10 hours for a wick heater with an output of 10,000 btu per hour. For the Japanese fan heaters that turn the liquid Kerosene into a gas that is then burnt, 12 hrs thereabouts.
I have seen video that say to light and extinguish outside but the info on heater I just bought said not to move a lit heater...imagine if you tipped a lit heater over in the process of moving it!
Your army "direct heat to electricity" fan sits directly on top of the heater. All the heaters I see for sale have the wire grid over top. So, the solution is,,,,?
Yes as long as you keep a window cracked 1" for fresh air to replace the O2 used by the heater. This recommendation dates back to circa 1900, when Kerosene heaters were first in use. Still applies today!
I purchased it from an on-line military surplus store. I did a search for everywhere they used to be. And found nothing! However I found a company that, right now, claims to have new units in stock and that is most likely because they have raised the price 250% over what I originally paid. $800 for a thermo-electric fan? What a ridiculous proposition. At that price better to buy a portable generator to run a $30 fan, a fridge and a bunch of lights as well.
Run it on diesel. It's cheaper and burns hotter (diesel puts out more BTUs because there's no wax in it) Kerosene stinks and is too dam expensive. And if you can, install a ceiling fan above it (or small fan blowing down from above) really helps distribute the heat.
@@greghall_The_TechEditor Injector pump lubricant? Diesel fuel for diesel engines. You don't breath it (like stinky kerosene) it burns clean (if you have your heater set right)

A pinned wick has metal pins sewed into the wick cloth that slide into slots on the burner to raise the wick. A sock wick uses pointy teeth to grab the wick and raise it. The pinned wick can NOT be raised any higher than the manufacturer wants you too and when it is burnt down it must be replaced. A sock wick can be raised pulled a way from the pointy teeth and raised 1/4" and and re-pressed into the pointy teeth to extend the useful life of the wick. I would refer you to milesstair.com for images of pinned and un-pinned wicks because I simply do not deal with nor do I own even one pinned wick to show you. Sorry!

Usually that is true except when trying to level a wick that has burnt lopsided, or the carbon is so bad that it needs to be burnt dry. Yes it will eat wick but you are trying to save a bad wick at this point so a dry burn is worth a try.

Im confused about the cost. At 4 gal per day and $10 a gal for 1K thats $40 a day or $1200 a month!

Cheap lighting replacement is a piece of spaghetti, which keeps you from getting burnt

Can you use high-grade diesel fuel? Someone said that with a bit of rubbing alcohol in it one can use diesel.
It has been done before but I prefer NOT to burn Injector Lubricant that is in the Diesel.

If the wick is clean, the chimney bleed holes are clear, using clear kerosene and there is no breeze blowing on the unit, there is very little smell.

That fan is impossible to find now. Not sure why it was discontinued.

I have no idea where to purchase one. They have been out of production for years and out of the salvage market for years too. Only hope is a used unit somewhere on the Internet.
2.5 gallons of 1K kerosene at Fleet Farm in Wisconsin costs $20.99; I haven't used my heater yet but read that 2.5 gallons will burn about 15 hours; in one 24/7 week that would take 11.2 containers of kerosene, costing approximately $235.00 in fuel. That's freak'n expensive!!!
You are better off purchasing in bulk or from a "locked" pump. In my area, Northern NY, a "Locked" pump price is $3.35 per gallon. Bulk, 100 gallon minimum is $2.95 per gallon.

Kerosene is $4.29 at Speedway if you have one in your area that has K1 at the pump. It still adds up, but buying from Menards or any other retail outlet by the gallon is highway robbery. Hell, even pump prices are but they have us by the gonads..."Where else are you gonna get it from?"
Where I am k1 kerosene is prohibitively expensive and only available at box stores. There are ppl that are using ultra low supher #2 diesel w a pint of 91 percent isopropyl alcohol. The wick must be cotton to prevent clogging. Exhaust is similar to k1 as far as I have read. The cost is about a fourth of k1.

If you can find one. they used to be $250. Now I have seen them go as high as $750 which is crazy. But it is supply and demand. They have not been available for a few years now. So it is NOS or used.
Finding Kerosene is hard to find. Can't find a gas station that sells it and it's about $10 a gallon in stores.
There are some places in the country that there are few gas stations with the "locked" pump. You could check with local fuel dealers as to the current Kerosene price in bulk for water clear and the minimum that they will deliver. Sometimes a simple 55 gallon Blue plastic drum will suffice.
Gotta ask: can I burn jet A fuel in my heater? Kerosene is impossible to find unless I'm at lowes and 1 gallon is $14.00

Sorry but all the other fans that are made for wood stoves, can't take the heat of a Kerosene heater and will eventually burn up!

Kerosene is expensive compared to Diesel... I have found videos of people using diesel by adding an oz of 90% Isophrel Alcohol and using it for years... What say you?
Diesel has injector lubricant in it. I, personally don't care to burn or breath fuel injector lubricant
I've tried diesel with the alcohol. Doesn't work, the wick gets screwed up.

I wish I did. I purchased mine when they were out on the surplus market. Now I see them here and there but for outrageous prices. Do Google searches, have a saved search on Ebay and be prepared to spend a lot of money. 'Fraid I open a Pandora's box on these Kettle fans! :(

When I got into Kerosene, it was quite cheap. Then it became expensive and people started dumping their Laser Kerosene heaters for Propane. Then when Kerosene was cheap again and Propane was expensive, why didn't the same people dump their Propane heaters for Kerosene again?? You stick with what you have because of the great expense in changing your heating system every few years depending on the price of fuel. I can store a year and a half of Kerosene for winter heating and my Kerosene water heater. So, I am not affected by seasonal market pricing. Can't do that with Natural Gas, Propane, Electricity, etc. Plus for an extended electrical power outage, if you were smart enough to have Kerosene on hand, that is better than empty Propane tanks with the stores closed or the Natural Gas flow is stopped because there is no power to run the pumps.
What do you mean by "PIN" - what is it?
Some models of Kerosene heater have riveted pins that insert into the wick raising mechanism. With this type of wick and heater, you can't raise the wick to compensate for the burn down of the wick over time. If the wick and heater use a sock type, you just disengage the wick from the raising mechanism and then raise the wick back to the factory specification. This gives you additional life from the wick.

Some wicks have metal pins that fit into holes in the wick holder. Thus there is no adjustment of the wick up and down in the holder.

Glad I found your video. I have been looking at kerosene heaters. Used one in Japan years ago and I don't know why they have a bad rap. How do know if it has a pinned wick or not? or did you mean to buy one to with the heater that is not pinned.

how long does a gallon of kerosene last?
It depends on the heater. But on average 8 - 10 hours for a wick heater with an output of 10,000 btu per hour. For the Japanese fan heaters that turn the liquid Kerosene into a gas that is then burnt, 12 hrs thereabouts.
Do you light the heater outside and then bring it inside?
I have seen video that say to light and extinguish outside but the info on heater I just bought said not to move a lit heater...imagine if you tipped a lit heater over in the process of moving it!
I personally would not move a 22,500 btu heater while running. A small Perfection at 11,000 btu, no problem.
Your army "direct heat to electricity" fan sits directly on top of the heater. All the heaters I see for sale have the wire grid over top. So, the solution is,,,,?
If you notice, I removed the mounting screws and discarded the top cage.

Yes as long as you keep a window cracked 1" for fresh air to replace the O2 used by the heater. This recommendation dates back to circa 1900, when Kerosene heaters were first in use. Still applies today!

I purchased it from an on-line military surplus store. I did a search for everywhere they used to be. And found nothing!
However I found a company that, right now, claims to have new units in stock and that is most likely because they have raised the price 250% over what I originally paid. That's a lot of coin, but they really do work wonderfully.

Run it on diesel. It's cheaper and burns hotter (diesel puts out more BTUs because there's no wax in it) Kerosene stinks and is too dam expensive. And if you can, install a ceiling fan above it (or small fan blowing down from above) really helps distribute the heat.
While it may burn hotter, I prefer not to breath injector pump lubricant!

What is a pinned wick ? Be nice is you showed it.
A pinned wick has metal pins sewed into the wick cloth that slide into slots on the burner to raise the wick. A sock wick uses pointy teeth to grab the wick and raise it. The pinned wick can NOT be raised any higher than the manufacturer wants you too and when it is burnt down it must be replaced. A sock wick can be raised pulled a way from the pointy teeth and raised 1/4" and and re-pressed into the pointy teeth to extend the useful life of the wick. I would refer you to milesstair.com for images of pinned and un-pinned wicks because I simply do not deal with nor do I own even one pinned wick to show you. Sorry!

Don't burn cotton wicks dry, only fiberglass.
Usually that is true except when trying to level a wick that has burnt lopsided, or the carbon is so bad that it needs to be burnt dry. Yes it will eat wick but you are trying to save a bad wick at this point so a dry burn is worth a try.
