Sorry Barnaby. I disagree. If players need the roar of a crowd to perform, they are the wrong players. This squarely sits with player mentality and intelligence. They need to bottle up the frustration of these losses and head out on the pitch with fire in the eyes. This is what top teams do.

It breaks my heart that we can’t push ourselves forward in the league when others drop off. I may be alone on this but we should either bench Romaro for awhile or let him go. To me it feels like the players aren't fully invested in the way Ange wants to play and they are still, under the surface, nervous or anxious about playing the way he wants (probably thinking "I can't make a bad pass because our defensive line is so high that a single intercepted pass from me and a good ball in behind from the opposing team could be our undoing..." or similar thoughts) and I think that, coupled with the fact that Ange doesn't want our players to indulge in the same underhand tactics and dark-arts in order to get feedback from the manager/coach on changes they can make during the game, is gimping us severely. Like you mentioned, the CL final that we got to and those "good" seasons under Poch were due to the gritty players that we had digging their heels in and refusing to lose or draw games...they fought and ran through walls for Poch because those players believed in him and the way we were playing football, and it was getting results nearly every time - now though we go 2 games and play reasonably well and win, then we lose to teams we should be putting to the sword - ESPECIALLY at our own ground.
I still have not forgiven Levy for not keeping Poch and backing him properly - we had the opportunity to push on, revitalise the team and really go for glory, but instead our owner just saved the pennies and sacked off the best manager we've had in a long LONG time. Ange will be no different, albeit I don't think he's going to be given the time it might require to turn us into a team anywhere near the level Poch's team played at, but my other worry is Ange is being found out by other managers/coaches and doesn't have an answer for how to combat the way teams play against him. He talks about how teams come over to the coaches and ask for adjustments they can make during breaks in play and how he doesn't want to do that stuff himself, but when teams are literally doing these things and then taking us apart minutes later, surely we have to ask how naive Ange can be? Why he doesn't tend to coach the players from the sidelines or indulge in the chats with players in longer breaks of play due to injury etc is beyond me - surely he should be doing anything and everything to try and win? I know he's 'oldschool' with his approach and he hates the way modern teams do this stuff, but there comes a point where you can't complain about it or use it as an excuse as to why your teams are losing games they should be dominant in any more. I don't think the players have bought into things fully with Ange, and it shows with the way that we lose these games right before International breaks - the players are already thinking "I can't wait to get away from this ridiculousness and play for my country" I reckon, and thats probably why we keep falling flat in these games prior to breaks - they're just not in it for Ange or don't feel we are doing the right things tactically and that our style is so fragile that a couple of bad spells of play could end up with us being 2 or 3 goals down.

Pep won a treble and he will tell you that this league is the most competitive and hardest to win in the world ! It is ANGE's job to prepare the team mentally, he will NOT slag the players to the press if he does he will lose the dressing room, my feeling is he has lost some players already. What Ange is beginning to realise is that he faces the biggest challenge of all. It's not our ability; we beat City and Villa in the same week. We made Brighton look like a championship team for the first half. At an individual level and at a team level, we don't respect the opposition when we feel we are above them. This is a true cancer and one that could cost Ange his job because the organization hasn't been able to change the culture and Ange won't give up trying to change it.

  • @gesslertoon
    @gesslertoon Місяць тому +1

Hi Barnaby. good shows as usual.
Thinking about Ange he is all about philosophy, which he has said he will die for.
The thing about philosophy is the same as can be said about religion and politics. Everyone has a different opinion.
So Ange is changing the philosophy/mentality of the club as we are constantly told needs a lot of time.
Ange has also said that we don't do defence, we don't have to consider how the other team plays, set pieces will take care of themselves and amongst other things all we have to do is score more goals than the opposition.
So here we have this Guru who has this winning formula that the players have to adapt to and work it out between themselves during each match.
No instructions from him, he is only an observer who can see how his philosophy progressing.
The problem is that without any specific game plan for the occasion, you have 11 players who have heard the philosophy and are being coached to score more goals than the opposition with the high-line. However if the players don't 'mind-meld' they all have differing interpretations of what to do and when to do it. They are not being coached tactically because 'that's not who we are mate' so most of the time we use the KISS (keep it simple stupid) method, short passes etc. which usually comes unstuck because we haven't been coached to do what comes next.
Occasionally a player will have a moment of brilliance, or a bit of hard work pays off, and that's about it. So without proper pre and in-game management we end up looking absolutely stupid.
And I should add that we lose to a lot of lower ranked teams because they do the KISS method better, so Ange is being out managed just with the basics alone. He is not Premier League standard so doesn't understand what players he needs to raise Spurs to a proper P/L standard team.
It is also evident that he is offended to easily, and so would not be approachable constructively by the players or anyone else. COYS
    .

You are right about our fans. We have this weird expectation that we should win home games like this just by turning up. When we don't some fans get vitriolic and abusive. That type of supporter should stay away from the ground and fester somewhere else. It will never help the team and is really unpleasant. This is our team and we should support rather than the opposite.
As for the mental attitude of the team for many years we are so slow to get going. How many times do we go crazy when the team only start playing with aggressive passion after half time when we are behind again? We have to come out and imagine we are 1-0 down from the whistle. No side passes, just attack. We have tried the opposite and it invariably always fails. To do that however requires a captain with fire in his belly like Graham Roberts (I was there in 1984 to see him do exactly that in the Eufa cup final), Alan Mullery or Dave Mackay. As much as Vic is a great shot-stopper he has yet to show that he can dominate the box which is a must for any successful team.
I am not interested in a change of manager. I have seen far too many come and go with very little return. I would give Ange to the end of next season and then we can have a conversation about whether that was right or wrong.

    1. Older season ticket holding fans seem to be generally miserable. Can’t even blame them: the repeated gut punches of disappointment like Sunday played over 20,30,40 years has to be traumatising to the point where you develop protective mechanism not to allow yourself to get too excited or hopeful. It’s a form of trauma 101.
    2. The owner’s greed hiking up ticket prices, banning standing, pandering to day trippers: doing all the things that have ruined match day atmosphere across the premier league. Support fan tifos, flags, lowering concessions, safe smoke flares - like they do in places like Germany. Club won’t though

I based this on our Jekyll and Hyde performances throughout this season. I'm not changing that after 38 games. In fact we could easily finish 15th. Forget about winning a trophy. Arsenal Liverpool, City will share the domestic trophies. Bilbao should easily win the Europa with a home final and one of the best defences in Spain and Europe. Keep bashing away as Ange happily proves me right. No doubt we will go out and beat City, but we will be nailed on to lose at home to Fulham a week later.

    1) buy more established players: Neto, Eze, Murillo, etc, 4-5 or more stablished starting level players.
    2) adaptable tactics (Slot) -provide options depending on what the opponent is doing, BUT, it's for sure is gonna be less entertaining
    3) wait, develop our youth
if not, we have to be ok with this being a process when we can hit our stride in about 1-2 more years with good growth and development of our youngsters, but we'll peak perhaps in 2-3 years to 5-8 years ahead. We'll hit one strong cycle.

We didn't see 11 players on that pitch playing for the badge. All I personally saw was 11 headless chickens running around the pitch, thinking about making a name for themselves in internationals rather than playing for the badge they are wearing and the club that are paying them wage week in and week out. Alongside them, a farmer standing with his arms crossed by the pitchline, unable to do shiet when the fans needed him the most. Our backline was a joke as I have stated during the live reaction and I'll stand by it. Look at Arsenal ffs! It pains me to admit they have the most quality of a backline than our pityful backline full of cowards who wouldn't take a risk for the ball or a foul. You would have thought against all superstitious odds and even the ref's bias towards Ipswich we'll still turn around, but by the time the scoreline was 2 - 0 by half time, it was done and dusted. Dr Tottenham strikes again, and even Spursy at that. How many times will we bottled a golden opportunity like that when other teams are performing badly and the gap is super, super tight? Embarassing, this deadbeat of a club. Come back to me when you establish a better form and a much, much better consistency. I may not be Ange Out but I'm sure am not a Spurs fan anymore today. Wasted my money buying a Spurs kit to support the team and wasted my time staying up till 9 in the fuckin p.m to watch this clown show. Better sail off than to sink with this ship I'll tell ya😡😡😡

People said Spurs had not change so many years, after so many managers and so many players, and still being Spursy. Who is to blame ? To an outsider, the constant factors in all these years are the fans, not the managers and the players. The problem could be the fans. Are the spur fans most demanding of all clubs ? When results are not good, they want to sack the managers. They abuse the players. Too much demands and too little care from the fans.

A thought provoking game indeed. We can’t keep going behind, losing to bottom table teams, losing before intl breaks…But despite the new bottom I honestly believe Ange is doing a job moving forward with tilling the toxic wasteland that has become Spurs in preparation for planting a new mentality, club culture and young talent.
On paper players like Bentancur look good and you can’t help but wonder if they would perform under another manager, but imho the “Don Paratici” signings were scatter-gun, overrated and ill-suited and continued to add to a confused and mediocre squad since the end of the Pochettino era. Bargain-bin players who might be likeable and able to put a good game together but are inconsistent and just not good enough. Unfortunately under Ange and Lange we have missed out on first choice picks on almost every transfer, but we have secured some young talents.
To agree with the tactical criticisms, we have some good players but we can never seem to get them to click. Parts of the squad seem unequal and ill-fitting to the style of play. For example Udogie and Porro in the inverted wingback positions that have left us so defensively vulnerable. Udogie has pace and physicality but poor passing and crossing while Porro has good passing and crossing but poor pace and physicality…and despite their Liverpool-esque nimble/diminuitive characteristics they hardly put a cross in or contribute to the game. We’ve also got Venom in goal but not an ounce of venom beyond the back line and in the back line itself Dragusin is ill-suited and the fans can’t decide if Romero is a Spurs legend or just another player going through the motions at Spurs daycare.
Sell Romero, Richarlison and Dragusin if they’re being eyed, let go of Werner, and begin phasing Son, Madders and Biss out for the younger talent. I love Porro and if he stays a back 3 would be nice but Ange will likely stick to his back 4. Sign a new defender, a great holding midfielder like Baleba and better GK and ST backups.
    Vicario
    Porro, Vuskovic, VDV, Udogie/Spence
    Baleba, Gray,
    Johnson/Odobert, Kulu/Bergvall, Moore/Yang
    Solanke

10th place form probably means you wont win any cups is my issue with people making that claim. We are a 7th-4th (if ultra consistent) place team based on recent history. A more realistic aim is to finish minimum 6th and progress well in the cups and maybe win one if luck is on our side.

Many problems Barnaby, but I have been saying this from the start, the idea of possession/progression football does not stand up to scrutiny, it does not work, it slows the game, it allows the opposition to slide back and set their defense.
You watch what we do out of defense, Romero plays his usual prima Donna role of holding the ball, stopping play, passing around and back in and out to the midfield, going nowhere.
It is pure b/s and has got to stop.
Nothing beats a long ball to the wings ,every time, it cuts out 3 sometimes 4 players and 20 passes .It's basic , it's simple, but it works.
Poro for me never ever marks up on his man, it's always up to Johnson, and if he does not do it you always get a man free up that side and they usually score .
I would sit some of these defenders on their arse, sit them on the bench, read them the riot act and give them an ultimatum either turn up and face up or go onto the transfer list.
Of course we need more players to do this, so lets buy more players.
Look at Burgess for Ipswich, a tall defender, a bit slow, but he makes our high priced buys look second rate.
Why do Ipswich get bang for their bucks, simple, they are desperate to play Premier league, they have motivation, they want it.
Luongo refused to play for the Australian team because he wanted to pour his efforts into getting Ipswich into the premier league, and they did but Luongo spends more time on the bench then he does on the field but the attitude is still there, they want to be there.
I look at our lot and a lot of those players need to be shown the door , they go through the motions and they get paid more then the y deserve , Sonny is just not performing , I don't think he is a good leader because he wants to be liked, we need a mongrel for captain and the only mongrel I see is the goal keeper Vicario , maybe Ange needs to revisit the role of players , Kulusevski would be my choice as captain , he could turn into the mongrel we need.

I don't want Ange sacked… I want him to stay… Keep him till the end of the season… and then make a decision… If, by then, he’s not turned this team around or shown substantial progress, then there’ll be no excuse.
Personally, I feel that all the fans that are going “#AngeOut” are just toxic.
They just need to be patient. Believe me, I’m frustrated too… But this team needs time…
I think Ange is a fantastic manager. He has proven the Spurs, under him, are capable of amazing things… Just that it has not been consistent. Give him time.
I also hope Levy doesn't get trigger-happy and sack him. Give Ange till the end of the season. Sacking him would mean Spurs just are back to the drawing board.
I also don't think winning trophies should be the yardstick… Yes, great if they do win… But I’d rather have a top-4 finish in the league and no trophies.
A good finish in the league is a sign of consistency… Progress… Just look at MU - they won the FA Cup… But that is but a distant memory.

When a fan base is split on a manager that's never a good sign. All I can say is Levy sacked Poch and didn't back Jose or Conte that are world class managers then Levy brings in Ange backs him and there is no consistency and some of our fan base back an under performing manager when they said Conte and Jose were negative. In my opinion Levy should backed Jose. We scored over 100 goals in all competitions gets us to a final and is sacked by Levy 5 days before a final. How serious are we as a football club? Does it really matter what manager we have in charge? Do we ever have enough quality in the squad? Why back a manager that has never managed in the top 5 leagues? Ange isn't good enough but the recruitment team and the chairman should be sacked as well. We are not a serious football club. Cut the wages down rise ticket prices build a hotel and not build a team capable of winning trophies. Not statues or stands named after club legends. Its the ENIC way. No ambition

Johnson simply isn't good enough, he's too physically weak plus his decision making is abysmal. As for Werner, I'd glady pay for his one-way flight back to Germany, he's dreadful. I'd drop Johnson, put Porro in his place on the right wing, and play Spence at right back.

Barnaby have to agree with you the fan base attitude and feeling of entitlement amongst them . Not blaming everyone but it is an issue . Quite sure it impacts the players when it is not going right .
The international break issue is very real too , 5 or 7 pre-international break matches we have lost is a pattern without doubt .
Without question Eze would be ideal now that Maddison is not achieving his level in any game .
