I wasn’t prepared for the emotional response I had upon watching Unification. My mother introduced my sister and I to Star Trek in December of 1979 when she and Dad took us to see The Motion Picture. Mom passed away in January of 2004, and the theme of this short about life and death really spoke to me, and made me grateful that Mom thought enough of us that we should know these characters.
To answer some of the questions about what's happening, Gary Mitchell, possibly hovering outside of the Nexus, is apparently aiding Starfleet in their attempt to resurrect James T Kirk from the remains recovered from the planet he died on and stored at The Daystrom Institute black site, as we saw in Picard season 3. People speculate that Yeomen Colt from the original Star Trek pilot is a traveler like Wesley Crusher from the previous short videos and that Spock has shared his experiences with V'ger with her, explaining the shape of that pond on that plateau that looks like the opening of the massive probe. Gary Mitchell and The yeoman basically help a Kirk Resurrected at the point that he died 30 years ago and goes to a memorial for Spock where Kirk sees Savik and Spock's son they had together on the Genesis planet. Then he sees the time traveling Universe hopping alien last seen in Star Trek Discovery season 3 who is from the Kelvin universe and transports Kirk to that alternate timeline universe where his past selves starting with the version of himself that would be the current version in that universe and then a future version as his body adjust to the pressures of going back in time and then to another universe. Then we see the reason for all of this which is to go to Spock's deathbed shortly before he died in an alternate universe so he didn't have to die alone and could be reunited with his dearest friend as they spent final moments together. We can only speculate what happens from here on out but this is official and William Shatner and his Kirk have returned to the Star Trek universe, possibly for the final time but who knows? This was an absolutely incredible way for both characters to go out if it's the last time we see them in his capacity and the fact that William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy family was involved every step of the way was just beautiful.
The only thing i would've added would be Kirk telling Spock, as he grabs his hand, " I have been, and always shall be, your friend." But honestly speaking, this is perfect as-is.
Thanks for doing this reaction video. Together with the Comments section, the reaction video has increased my appreciation of "765874 Unification". I have learned a lot about the symbolism and significance of several scenes. More importantly, I have learned how powerful TOS (and the six original cast movies) is even for those who were not original Trekkies. I am an original trekkie from 1966. Old Trek is an important part of my life. I am delighted that younger people can appreciate how good Trek was.
Well, I want to start off by saying that I consider this to be canon as well. However, the Paramount logo also shows up on novels, comics, video games and all the rest.
Yep. It was made not by but in co-operation with Paramount helping mark 30 years since Generations. So in all intents and purposes it is canon. It definitely is for me anyway.

Let me share my interpretation of this wonderful labor of love. We see Gary Mitchell who was a character in 'Where no man has gone before' where he was seemingly killed by Kirk, after gaining immense psychic powers which corrupted his mind. He is played by the original actor, Gary Lockwood, with superb de-aging AI CGI. We can see he is floating in front of a giant fireball, possibly either watching or creating the process of a new reality or universe. We can see his powers have evolved and has become god like now, possibly similar to the Q continuum. As he closes his eyes, we see what Gary sees, fragments through time and reality with a focus on Kirk's death and the ripple effects of his life & actions. He sees Kirk's grave on Veridian III with Spock taking Kirk's insignia before Spock lead to the Kelvin time line later in his life, thus taking the insignia with him. We see more flashes and images related with Vger and eventually we see Kirk's body displayed on the monitor which is stored in a Lab. Then Gary, with perhaps a moment of whatever remains of his humanity, shows compassion and uses his godlike power to capture Kirk's soul/consciousness at the moment of his Death on Viridian III, similar to what Q did to Picard in 'Tapestry'. Gary creates a temporary reality of the perfect garden of Eden and places Kirk there. Kirk meets a few familiar faces, specifically Savik and her son, which Kirk recognizes. Not sure if anyone outside of Kirk is either alive, real or perhaps also souls that meet here at the end of their own lives. I would think that Gary, like Q, is no longer bound by time or linear timelines. The one person that does not really fit in that group is Universe warping/Time travelling alien from discovery. I think the Alien is either brought there by Gary or perhaps could simply be there to hand Kirk the insignia which the alien must have taken from Spock from the Kelvin time line. You can see the alien holding out the insignia for Kirk to take, but Kirk has to take it with both hands thus showing the insignia bears great importance. Now what Kirk hold the insignia, and thus has a connection to Spock in the Kelvin Timeline, the alien is able to send Kirk into the Kelvin Timeline to meet with Spock on his deathbed. When Kirk arrives we see him in a long dark corridor with a light at the end, this could be a kind of temporary purgatory, a space between life/death and Universes/Realities. As Kirk look around we end up seeing 3 different Kirks, I think at this moment Kirk is simply remember his key moments in life and how he looked when he was young (ToS), middle age (Khan era) and his oldest self. Eventually the oldest Kirk stays, perhaps a conscious decision by Kirk as he is probably more aware of what and where he is, standing at the edge of the final true unknown, death. As he emerges we see Spock on his deathbed and for 1 last time, without the need for any words, they get to show their life long unbroken friendship to each other and to us, the viewers, before they both meet their final sunset. Their final journey into the truly unknown, but together, as they have done countless times & adventures before. Passing into the the veil of death, into legend... Though these 2 characters are easily the greatest fictional characters ever created on the silver screen, I must remind myself not to be saddened by their departure. They basically carried the torch for their part of the journey and they both carried it extremely well. The torch being Roddenberry's vision of a bright future for humanity, being one of hope, one of positive changes and overcoming our fears and short comings, holding onto our better selves and the best versions of ourselves. The dream Kirk and Spock carried will stay alive as long as we all remember what Kirk and Spock represented, the best and bravest parts of ourselves and carrying forwards to a hopeful future. At least, that is my interpretation, yours may differ but in the end, we'll all eventually end up at the same destination.

Great reaction to this short feature film. I watched it 2 days ago and enjoyed watching it. I am a huge star trek fan, yes a Trekkie with a family of treckies. Love Star Wars too, but a bigger Star Trek fan. Grew up in the 70's and watched all of the TOS and also all the movies with Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner. Also met them both in the late 80's. I was also apart of the DGA - Directors Guild Association and have a Bachelors degree in Communication Arts, film and audio recording, Masters in Business. I am apart of the event industry and without giving too much of whom I am, I am well known. So from my point of view of a die hard treckie and some one in the industry, I really enjoyed this film. However I understand about not having any dialogue and the facial expressions conveys to the viewer of what they are feeling, was very well done and well crafted. The visual effects were amazing and the de aging of Shatner was spot on. However, I would added some dialogue, when Kirk saw Spock on his death bed, Spock should have said - Jim. Pause,, then Kirk should have said, Spock I'm here, you will not die alone. This would be a significance reference from one of the Star Trek Films #5 where Kirk says I have always known that I would die alone. I love the touch of Savik and her son, that Kirk never knew because of the ponfar in Star Trek 3. In star trek 4 savik does not go with Kirk or the crew because she was pregnant with Spock's baby. This was a genius insert for us fans whom never knew this. The other and last idea was to have Dr. Mccoy making a small appearance. Afterall the three of them on the TOS and the movies is what made the show so heart felt and timeless. Their friendship is a bond that cannot be broken, even after death..... Jules Urbach actually popped into a livestream reaction on another channel, and said that they did actually film some dialogue between Kirk and Spock, but Bill Shatner decided that they should not use it and just allow the scene of recreating the moment in sickbay from The Motion Picture and that dialog to speak for them - "This simple feeling..." Same thing with Dr McCoy. He is there, just very much subtly. While some of the shots are recreations of Kirk and Spock in sickbay in TMP, some others like the overhead looking down and over the shoulder shots sitting on the bed are taken from ST:V when McCoy is reliving his last moments with his father as he passed. It is a quiet sort of thing to be sure, but DeForest Kelley is there in a very respectful way.

Gary Mitchell gave Spock's dying wish, to see his old friend again, through Yeoman Colt. Nice to see Saavik and Spock's son, hidden in the scripts of Star Trek IV when she stayed back with Spock's mother.
While I love this short film, now you can see why actors did the strike for digital likeness/deep fake issues cause DAMN that looked good and we’re still in its infancy. I would love to see what happens as it progresses and actors/actresses give consent.
I wonder if Kirk and Picard ever really left the Nexxus.... Guinan did say, that it takes you wherever you want to go... So technically, it took them both back to Viridian III before the rocket was launched even though that event had already taken place... BUT, there was no "duplicate" Picard in play.....
Like you, i grew up watching the OS movies and then TNG and this gets me in the feels. If anyone doesn't have that reaction, i imagine it must be fans of "NuTrek". If i have one issue, it's that their was no way of getting McCoy in there too, since the heart of OS Trek was the trio - the warrior, the philosopher, and the doctor. It's a balance of characters i feel the rest of Trek, even TNG, failed to mimic in quite the same way
I don't think the afterlife has anything to do with what was shown in the Unification short. My interpretation is this: At the end of Star Trek: Generations, Kirk appeared to have died but really didn't (and Picard buried Kirk, thinking he really was dead). Picard removed Kirk's Starfleet badge and placed it on the rock pile. Some time later, Spock visited Kirk's grave site and took Kirk's Starfleet badge (and at some point that alien guy got Kirk's badge). A little later on, Starfleet arrived and removed both Kirk's body and the Enterprise D saucer section from Veridian III. Kirk's body was taken to and stored at Daystrom Station (according to what we see in that Easter egg in Star Trek: Picard Season 3. Kirk's body, now in stasis, is now being monitored by some sort of medical stations showing different angles of his skeletal structure (we see one of these medical stations in Picard Season 3 and a few more of these medical stations in footage from other OTOY shorts). A fan also said that they were able to see some of the small text written on one of the medical stations monitoring Kirk's body on Daystrom Station and the text says something like "Captain James T. Kirk was CRITICALLY wounded on Veridian III helping Captain Jean-Luc Picard defeat Soran" (CRITICALLY wounded...not MORTALLY or FATALLY wounded). Also, the words "Project Phoenix" were also seen in the small text on that medical monitoring station in relation to Kirk being in stasis. At some point, Starfleet finds a way to resurrect Kirk using Project Phoenix (is Gary Mitchell involved in this somehow?) A newly resurrected Kirk is now seen walking toward a crowd of people that includes Saavik and the son she made with Spock. An alien dude gives Kirk BACK the badge that Picard had removed from Kirk's uniform when Picard was burying Kirk on Veridian III. Kirk goes to some mysterious place and encounters two versions of his younger self, after which he puts his Starfleet badge BACK ON and then is immediately sent to the Kelvin universe, where he visits a dying Spock before Spock passes away. None of this is the Nexus or the afterlife because if Kirk was in the afterlife, he would not be visiting a dying Spock because a dying Spock would not be in the afterlife, he would still be in the land of the living. Also, if this was the afterlife, that means Kirk was seeing Saavik and her son in the afterlife as well, which means by the time the short movie is over, there would be three dead Vulcans (Spock, Saavik and their son, which would royally suck). This is not Kirk's ghost from the afterlife visiting a dying Spock, because I doubt a spiritual form (a Kirk ghost) could physically interact with living flesh and bone (Kirk and Spock clasped hands in friendship in this OTOY short, just like they did in Star Trek: The Motion Picture). To me, this is a resurrected Kirk visiting Spock to say goodbye to him before Spock passes away...again.
It took me a minute to recognize Saavik, but I didn't know who the other Vulcan was until later in the video, when I read the article that I got the video link from.
I know he was a crew member for an episode in the original series where he gained otherworldly powers, but that's about all I know of him. From the article I read (later in the video), my guess is he was able to use his abilities to help reunite Kirk and Spock.
He has become a god and perhaps remembering his old friends assists with Kirk’s resurrection, breathing on the embers. Kirk was shown to be alive and in stasis in Picard season 3
There is a lot of symbolism here. IRL - due to health reasons, William Shatner was not able to attend Leonard Nimoy's funeral. He has been haunted every since by not being able to say a proper goodbye to his friend. So, this, in a way, is doing two things at once. Kirk being able to say goodbye to Spock and Bill Shatner being able to say goodbye to Leonard Nimoy. In reality, it would take moving literal heaven and earth for Bill and Leonard to have one last moment together. Divine intervention, so it can't. Just like such a thing would take in real life, in universe, it took the combined efforts of a god in Gary Mitchell (who if you follow his story in the novels, never died but basically is on par with a Q, maybe even more than a Q), Wesley Crusher as a Traveler (he is in the credits as the old man in the Generations dress uniform), a prime universe temporal agent in Colt, and a transdimensional Kelvin universe temporal agent in Yor to be able to bring Kirk and Spock together one last time. Mitchell has the power to resurrect the dead - that was in his TOS episode which to him is rather easy with his powers. Which he did. Then Crusher and the two temporal agents are able to bridge the Prime and Kelvin universes to allow Kirk to pass through (something that Agent Daniels says in Discovery is impossible at his point in history.)

That isn't de-aging, that is Sam Witwer with makeup. Sam has been in a ton of sci fi, and is himself a huge fan.

Like you, i grew up watching the OS movies and then TNG and this gets me in the feels.
If anyone doesn't have that reaction, i imagine it must be fans of "NuTrek".
If i have one issue, it's that their was no way of getting McCoy in there too, since the heart of OS Trek was the trio - the warrior, the philosopher, and the doctor. It's a balance of characters i feel the rest of Trek, even TNG, failed to mimic in quite the same way

I realized that after, when I read the JoBlo article. But I'll admit that it was the first thing I thought of - the effects looked that good to me.
I don't think the afterlife has anything to do with what was shown in the Unification short.
My interpretation is this: At the end of Star Trek: Generations, Kirk appeared to have died but really didn't (and Picard buried Kirk, thinking he really was dead). Picard removed Kirk's Starfleet badge and placed it on the rock pile. Some time later, Spock visited Kirk's grave site and took Kirk's Starfleet badge (and at some point that alien guy got Kirk's badge).
A little later on, Starfleet arrived and removed both Kirk's body and the Enterprise D saucer section from Veridian III. Kirk's body was taken to and stored at Daystrom Station (according to what we see in that Easter egg in Star Trek: Picard Season 3. Kirk's body, now in stasis, is now being monitored by some sort of medical stations showing different angles of his skeletal structure (we see one of these medical stations in Picard Season 3 and a few more of these medical stations in footage from other OTOY shorts). A fan also said that they were able to see some of the small text written on one of the medical stations monitoring Kirk's body on Daystrom Station and the text says something like "Captain James T. Kirk was CRITICALLY wounded on Veridian III helping Captain Jean-Luc Picard defeat Soran" (CRITICALLY wounded...not MORTALLY or FATALLY wounded). Also, the words "Project Phoenix" were also seen in the small text on that medical monitoring station in relation to Kirk being in stasis.
At some point, Starfleet finds a way to resurrect Kirk using Project Phoenix (is Gary Mitchell involved in this somehow?) A newly resurrected Kirk is now seen walking toward a crowd of people that includes Saavik and the son she made with Spock. An alien dude gives Kirk BACK the badge that Picard had removed from Kirk's uniform when Picard was burying Kirk on Veridian III. Kirk goes to some mysterious place and encounters two versions of his younger self, after which he puts his Starfleet badge BACK ON and then is immediately sent to the Kelvin universe, where he visits a dying Spock before Spock passes away.
None of this is the Nexus or the afterlife because if Kirk was in the afterlife, he would not be visiting a dying Spock because a dying Spock would not be in the afterlife, he would still be in the land of the living. Also, if this was the afterlife, that means Kirk was seeing Saavik and her son in the afterlife as well, which means by the time the short movie is over, there would be three dead Vulcans (Spock, Saavik and their son, which would royally suck). This is not Kirk's ghost from the afterlife visiting a dying Spock, because I doubt a spiritual form (a Kirk ghost) could physically interact with living flesh and bone (Kirk and Spock clasped hands in friendship in this OTOY short, just like they did in Star Trek: The Motion Picture).
To me, this is a resurrected Kirk visiting Spock to say goodbye to him before Spock passes away...again.
I neglected to mention it in the video, but I did notice the significance of that hand clasp, a nice callback to TMP.

It took me a minute to recognize Saavik, but I didn't know who the other Vulcan was until later in the video, when I read the article that I got the video link from.
I am still trying to understand Gary Mitchell at the beginning. What does it mean?
I know he was a crew member for an episode in the original series where he gained otherworldly powers, but that's about all I know of him. From the article I read (later in the video), my guess is he was able to use his abilities to help reunite Kirk and Spock.
He has become a god and perhaps remembering his old friends assists with Kirk’s resurrection, breathing on the embers. Kirk was shown to be alive and in stasis in Picard season 3
There is a lot of symbolism here. IRL - due to health reasons, William Shatner was not able to attend Leonard Nimoy's funeral. He has been haunted every since by not being able to say a proper goodbye to his friend. So, this, in a way, is doing two things at once. Kirk being able to say goodbye to Spock and Bill Shatner being able to say goodbye to Leonard Nimoy.
In reality, it would take moving literal heaven and earth for Bill and Leonard to have one last moment together. Divine intervention, so it can't. Just like such a thing would take in real life, in universe, it took the combined efforts of a god in Gary Mitchell (who if you follow his story in the novels, never died but basically is on par with a Q, maybe even more than a Q), Wesley Crusher as a Traveler (he is in the credits as the old man in the Generations dress uniform), a prime universe temporal agent in Colt, and a transdimensional Kelvin universe temporal agent in Yor to be able to bring Kirk and Spock together one last time.
Mitchell has the power to resurrect the dead - that was in his TOS episode which to him is rather easy with his powers. Which he did. Then Crusher and the two temporal agents are able to bridge the Prime and Kelvin universes to allow Kirk to pass through (something that Agent Daniels says in Discovery is impossible at his point in history.)
