7:51 In the story about talking about politics, there is one, but very important fact - beer.
Do not mess with drunk people unless they are your friends or good acquaintances.
Getting a five-year criminal sentence, just for two people talking about politics, is quite difficult (close to impossible). Unfortunately, in Russia, even for major violations, there is less punishment than it should be. So it's just a horror story (one person was scaring another).

Thank you for your insights! You are definitely right, I don't think that anything would have happened to the guy in a court, or maybe just a couple of days in prison for a first offense. But there's a sort of "mob justice", as described in the video, so the point remains, you have to be a bit careful when talking about politics...

14:46 It was necessary to file a report to the police for the beating, and possibly large faces of violation of the law. A good lawyer will tell you a dozen criminal articles that the bar staff violated.
Last week, one of these bars was closed by a police assault group. This is not a small story.

Alright, maybe next time I will do that then. It's just that I have once seen a video in Swiss television (already a while back) of someone who said that in Russia, calling the police is the last thing you do, because then the problems only start... 🙈 But then this has changed? @@Meet_Russia russian police works like any other police. If you are calling them about someone robbed you and take away a million euros first they will ask who are you, how did u get there, how did u get a million euros, why did you had a million euros with you in such place and only after they got clear answers about it - they will do a paperwork to start searching robbers. If you don't know russian this process may be a way more annoying and long. You'll have to wait while they will find a translator for you (you must pay for translation if your language is not one of legally supported languages in Russia, and as i remember english is not). And if u start shouting and express your agression about situation - russian police officers will lose their courage to help you. Imagine russian guy being robbed somewhere in Europe and calling police without knowing a local language starting to shout on local police. That's what you are looking like to them.
Better get an english-speaking lawyer first. Pay him and he will fight for your interests. While you're calm and well-informed about what is happening. Call your country's embassy and they will advice you a lawyer.

Swiss francs can also be exchanged directly for rubles in banks in Russia. This is probably the most profitable option. The last time I personally bought Swiss francs was several years ago at the "Sankt. Petersburg" bank. 1) 10k dollars limit is calculated for all the cash money in any currencies you have with you, so, be careful, as if you exceed the limit, the money will be confiscated and you may go to jail

I toured Moscow and St Petersburg for two weeks by myself last year. My advice is if you come from the airport, install Yandex and use it to book a car from the airport, otherwise, the drivers waiting for people in the airport would give you exorbitant rates. It saves you from getting scammed. Also make sure your telco provider works in Russia. I made a mistake of assuming my telco would work since the country I live in didn't sanction Russia ( I live in Singapore). Turns out, my telco doesn't work in Russia, although other Singapore telcos would have worked.

10k$ is a general limit for a green corridor, you cannot avoid it by exchanging some of your money to rubles. For a sum > 10k$ you have to declare your money and use red corridor, but only the part above 10k$.
You don't need to prove the source of income of that money, so should be easy, however I never tried. For >100k$ you need a paper to prove the source of income of that money.
Also, keep in mind that every transit country has its own rules on how much cash you can bring on you in and out, so maybe Turkey will not let you out - you need to read it's laws first. I was talking expecially about Russia. Plus EU probably will not let you bring euro in cash to Russia, because of the sanctions. Not sure about dollars.
If you get caught in green corridor with >10k$ you get arrested and your money(above 10k$) get confiscated by customs.

@@Meet_Russia you anyway cannot cover everything in one video. Some people may use crypto currency for example and it could be a perfect way if you know how it works. Another may choose bank transfer through Kazakhstan (if it still works).
For example, I know a Russian businessman who opened bank account in Kazakhstan and sent his plastic card to EU. Now he transfers money from Russia to Kazakhstan and then ask his friend in EU to take a cash from ATM to pay for some goods to send back to Russia.
In a theory you can find a Russian businessman who needs euros and do exchange, but you need a friend or family member whom you can trust. Then you can do online cash exchange. Give euro in EU and ensure that your friend received rubles cache in Russia at the same time. However the risk of scam is high.
I can suggest a lot ideas like that, but it is a poor theory. If you can bring the cash - it would be the best way. Otherwise find a way which is more familiar for you. Maybe find a Russian friend first of all 🤣

It was interesting to know that this scam still exists, in 2023 one group of that scammers was put in jail. in a theory you can pay but then go directly to the police. However I am not sure if it will work without Russian language and if it works in general. But as a Russian I feel that this scam mostly relies on people do not want to spend their time on lawyers.
Also, if you paid with a card, you can tell your bank to cancel the operation because it was a scam, but again I neven did that.

Russia is relatively safe for foreigners - unless you are unlucky and are taken hostage to exchange you to another criminal/arms dealer imprisoned in the West.
Normally foreigners wouldnt go to jail for "discrediting the army" - Russians would. Foreigners wouild not be mobilized either.
Saint Petersburg is generally a very open minded city, with many people speaking English. I am from the Eastern part and same cannot be said about it.
Just worth remembering that visiting a country waging aggressive war against their neighbours comes with the risks(not to mention the drones that can reach even Moscow) and your tourism money also fuel that machine.
But overall talk to the ordinary people and see what they think. Just be careful. There is a reason there was a massive wave of emigration from the country since the war started. It's not free or safe.

People inspire me to write more about Russia and what is means to be Russian. Russia has much to offer, the territory has beautiful nature, Moscow and St. Petersburg make you feel like you are in a fairy tale, good services, cleanliness in the big cities, little street crime. Come, see, as a tourist. If you want to stay and live for a long time, if you see your future in Russia there is something you should know about. The political situation is a big problem, and you will not be able to escape it unless you leave the country. It will affect you everywhere. The government it seems can't be just normal, it always slips in some kinky weird state and it puts its weirdness upon everyone which eventually leads to a total dysfunction. And when it happens the government is replaced with a new not less kinky and weird radicals. Tsarism went into dysfunction and was replaced with communism, communism went into dysfunction and was replaced with a bloody authoritarianism. Will it ever change or not is not known. There is no prerequisites for this pattern to change at this moment. You should remember this and keep it in the back of yuor head, that the thing you live in is not normal. If you forget you may go crazy, start saying and doing crazy things. Time will test you. You can earn PTSD just by living "a normal life" in Russia or get very unbridled and impudent like there is no limit, depending on your views and who you are. People will welcome you if you come, very warmly. Many people in Russia desperately try to cover their inferiority complex and prove to others that everything is ok in Russia without actually learning and doing the right thing and reach peace. If you want to join this society be ready to bear this psychological burden. Try not to get into swamp and become someone some of the Russians became. Good luck.

There is no practice that you will be put in jail for saying that you are against special operation until you organize a meeting or you are public person with 1m followers and share your opinion in social network. And even in that case 5 years is the max possible penalty. Usually people get a fine for the first time.
Example with that bar is an excellent, I mean 2 years of this state and we still have people(quite a lot) who now afraid to say something against in public and he probably will not get any fines, only an optional punch in his face(or no).
Also, the law is not about saying something agains the operation, it is defined as 'discrediting the armed forces of Russia', so it is mostly against hate speach to the army. However if you say that Ukraine is winning it could be counted as discrediting probably. So yes, better don't try to check it.

Number 1 tip : DO NOT GO! Especially if you are American - or risk being taken hostage. Quite a few have been.

Hello Stephan... I need a tip on the waiting line at the Estonian border... Someone from the USA recently crossed the border from Estonia and he said that there are people in Estonia that can hold the waiting line for you but with a price... Usually they are called the "place holder" of the waiting line where they take turns to guard the line for you so you can have a place in the line ... Who are these people? where can I contact them? I am arriving at around 12:00 noon in Tallinn and I need the "place holders" to keep the waiting line for me when I arrive. Please help... Can I reserve my spot on the waiting line of the border "Online"?

This is BS. One person "selling the place in line" for 100 others, no, it is not going to happen, when I'm in line. You wait for yourself, nobody else. Or go with a plain.

There are people who just stand in line and when they are in the front of the line, they sell their spot. You can just go to the front of the line I guess and ask if someone will sell their spot. To be honest, I think that this procedure is very unfair, you should stand in line yourself... The people in line might find it unfair as well and you might get some hate from them or they might not allow it to happen at all... Just stand in line like everybody else, bring an (audio) book or your Russian vocabulary cards...

Don’t go to this Estonia. The only thing worse than the Baltic countries is Ukraine (there’s Somalia in general), and these people have gone crazy with Russophobia, for them everyone who goes to or from Russia is an enemy. There is a bus Gdansk (Poland) Kaliningrad, there is a bus Kirkenes (Norway) - Murmansk. There are planes from Georgia and Armenia.
