This video is a 6-minute snapshot of an amazing 2-day, 2,438-mile journey on Amtrak's California Zephyr from Chicago to San Francisco. This takes me back! I did this trip ten years ago too as a single. Now I'm looking to take my young kids for fun.

Every hour or two the train stops, usually for 10-20 minutes, enough to have a walk on the platform and take a few photos. But not walk off to see the town, you'll be left behind! We stayed 3 days in SF, then took the train to LA.

Thank you for this video Mark. Within the past four hours I've been sucked into the rabbit hole that is the internet looking up different cross country train rides. Your video solidified that I'm doing the one from Chicago to San Fran on the Calfornia Zephyr. What an experience. Thanks again!

You took some awesome video of this trip! I took it in January of 2001, and my most enduring memory was going through the Sierras west of Reno, and listening to the engines strain up those slopes, with snow 10 feet high on either side of the train, and braking on the way down. Coming from flat, featureless Chicago, it was interesting watching the climate go from winter to spring to summer in the space of a couple of hours, going down through Colfax and Roseville into Sacramento, where there's palms and orange trees on the Capitol grounds. Great work, and you have a beautiful family!

I tried the same trip with my estranged young 12 and 13 yo kids
Trying to connect with then but to no avail
I wonder if anyone has an x that has lived 47 years solely to poison the children and the GC now against the other spouse?
But your video brings back memories thanks
One time I took my kids on three RT s on Amtrak around the country ! When Amtrak offered regional passes we took a different train route ea time!
Thanks and good luck with your family
      Enjoy them while it lasts!

Great video! I've never traveled with Amtrak; I've let the media scare me away with all the accidents that they've had over the past two decades.

Great video. This summer I'm heading from DC to Chicago on the Capital Limited and onward on the California Zephyr but only as far as Denver. Since it'll be just me I'm only dishing out for a regular econony seat haha.
