Believe a player grabbed it the first game after the 9/11 attacks and it stuck ever since. Plus the huge Corps of Cadet presence in the stands every game and on campus, its very fitting.
Born and raised as a Hokie and I still sprint to the stadium for that entrance, if you’ve never been to lane stadium to experience it in person, do yourself a favor and make the trip, even if you leave after sandman

It’s absolutely the most spectacular scene that any fan can witness.
