'The World of the Bauls' at IGNCA celebrating the holy spirit of the baul tradition. The event was organised in collaboration with 'Ekathara Kalari' trust and ' Datri Foundation'.
Smt. Parvathy Baul reflects on essence of Baul tradition, connections with Yoga parampara, vaishnava , bauddha traditions. Baul singing requires sincere dedication and Dhyan, singing and dancing is only a tool to connect with the divine and which is sadly often mistaken as merely folk music. Shri Biswanath Das Baul and Shri Madan Das Bairgya also share their views and experience.
The Baul are a group of mystic minstrels of mixed elements of Sufism, Vaishnavism and Tantra from states of West Bengal, Tripura and Assam's Barak Valley and Meghalaya. Bauls constitute both a syncretic religious sect of troubadours and a musical tradition.
The origin of Bauls is not known exactly, but the word "Baul" has appeared in Bengali texts as old as the 15th century. The word is found in the Chaitanya Bhagavata of Vrindavana Dasa Thakura as well as in the Chaitanya Charitamrita of Krishnadasa Kaviraja.
About the Speaker:
Smt. Parvathy Baul is a Spiritual Baul folk singer, musician and storyteller from Bengal and one of the leading Baul musicians in India. Trained under Baul gurus, Sanatan Das Baul, Shashanko Goshai Baul in Bengal, she has been performing both in India and other countries since 1995.
She is married to Ravi Gopalan Nair, a noted Pava Kathakali glove puppet artist, and is based in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, since 1997, where she also runs, "Ektara Baul Sangeetha Kalari" a school for Baul music.

Our Dharmik and Spiritual Sadhna is experiential.. Guru is the one who inspire and guide us to the path of this experiential journey.. Parvati Ji has explained the Baul parampara in the most beautiful and best possible way.. TMC govt is doing its best to islamize Sanatan Baul parampara the same way it is doing to Bangla language by replacing Sanskrit with Arabic words..TMC cuktural cell is callIng age old Sanatan Baul as 'Bengali Sufi' n crediting Baul music to one Bengali muslim Saint Lalon Fakir who was popular in East Bangal or todays Bangladesh! The reality is it was Lalon Fakir who got inspired by Sanskritic parampara n started using Sanskrit idioms in his creations but the islamist propaganda of TMC govt is the excat opposite. This is the present reality of West Bengal
