  • In this video created for the special exhibition Dig Deeper: Discovering an Ancient Glass Workshop, watch our Hot Glass team shape a glass vessel at a custom-built replica ancient glassblowing furnace.
This type of conical beaker with blue blobs was made and found at the 4th-century glassblowing workshop of Jalame, excavated by the Corning Museum of Glass and University of Missouri.
Conical Beaker with Blue Blobs, made between 300-399 in ancient Syro-Palestine. 79.1.159, gift of The Ruth Bryan Strauss Memorial Foundation. (glasscollection.cmog.org/obje...)

Very interesting technique, to cut the edge. A long time ago I was in a glass blowing workplace (for scientific instruments) that had a modern version of this. It was basically a metal wire where a current was flown through, heating up the wire redhot. When you wrap this wire around a large tube it will create a similar temperature gradient for the cut/break.
Thanks again for another great video.
