The Fluke 175 (basically the 177 without the backlight) is an excellent multimeter, used it many time and feel very confident in its ability to measure high voltages and would never have any doubt about its safety rating. Overall, a good multimeter and I did my research and got a really good quality one (only used once) for a cheap price on ebay :)
Hi Andy, I know they are expensive but please use the same type of fuse. There are specific safety reasons for using the ceramic fuses. See if you can fine non branded fuse but with the same spec.
mjlorton not sure if your familiar with multimeter's exploding due to wrong settings. Believe it or not , this year , finally , plumbers continuing ed included this demonstration. Its astounding and scary . the ceramic fuses , if I'm remembering correctly , help break the flow before it gets into the mega dangerous territory. It will still explode , but most likely , you'll still be able to breath and wet the pants.
Perfect timing for a great video! I just dropped my Simpson 260 and the black case broke like glass :-( I have been in both automotive and electronic fields for 40 years ad this meter seems like a good crossover tool. One important note. Sometimes very high impedance digital meters may indicate a phantom/ghost voltage (capacitive coupling) when used as an electricians meter which is why I preferred the Simpson 260 at times which has a lower impedance.
Excellent...thanks for the feedback! The teardown photos are brilliant, very nice detail. Thanks very much for referring back to my video. Cheers, Martin.
Default to AC current? Dunno about digital multimeter nor ac current, But my father always told me to leave his old sanwa analog avometer to 1000 vac or 750 vac when storing it, he said to prevent damage in case someone use it without changing the mode dial properly. Analogue multimeter indeed very sensitive to reverse voltage as the needle can't really move backward you might kill the coil. On dmm though I think it's pretty silly; Industrial thingie? It might be acceptable for clamp meter, but I'd prefer my dmm to defaulted to dc.
FYI... you referred to the 177 as a 117 several times.. you may want to add annotation to correct that as the 177 is a lot more meter than a 117.. i own both 115 and 177.. i bought the 177 for $40 usd and it was advertized as a 117.. i was pleased to see it was a 177 instead..
@dan20n Great feedback, yes the Fluke 287 / 289 would make it feel like a toy but totally agree with you sentiments on which multimeter I would grab to take some quick measurements. Thanks for posting. P.S. What did you pay for the 179?
Andy Tobin don't buy cheap alternatives to these fuses. They are specifically built to control the volume of explosion due to way over amping a multimeter. Its to allow you to go home after hospital visit vs closed casket funeral. Your life is worth the extra expense
Hi sir, i follow your videos and i think they are very useful. I am not electronic engineer but i like so much electronic in general. I like so much multimeters, led and solder :-). Under the blu fuse (left side) there is a Philips screw...remove the screw and pull up the rest of multimeter. I am curious, for upgrade video. Cheers from Rome Simone
Hello, I just picked up a 179. I wanted the 177, but I got a great price on the 179. I think the stock leads are the weak point. I would like to replace them with a better set. Which would you recommend the tl71 or tl175 twist? Any help would be much appreciated.
That screwdriver is no longer made. It is from Gray Tools of Canada, the last Industrial hand tools mfgr. in Canada. I have a bunch of their stuff and their quality standards and design are excellent. imsho
hola amigos alguien puede alludarme? como esta armado un multimetro FLKE79 el control de la perilla se me desarmó de echo solo es cuestion de levantar la tapa como cuando se cambia la pila. gracias
Thanks for the demonstrations on this Fluke. I recently purchased one. It is the 175 model and it is made in the USA.

copelandaa I have the 175 but need the clamp around . its been an outstanding meter.
My 177 is totally accurate within 10 mliliamps!

For how long can it stay calibrated when new? Does it need to be calibrated every year if not using much for high current and every second day?

Great review. I bought a used Fluke 179 for 160$ in Iran. I know it was a great bargain.
Very nice review :-)
I will start studing to be an electrician but still not sure which multimeter i will choise !!
Not sure, it's something I'm looking into for my Fluke 287.
Duely noted Sir. Thanks for the important information on fuse selectivity.
Why are Fluke replacement fuses so expensive? Can you recommend a cheap alternative for these ceramic fuses? Thanks...!

I’m confused he continuously says 117 but I thought it was the 177?
Lamentablemente, a partir de toda la información que tengo lo necesario para volver a un agente de Fluke para obtener reparación.
Great review, thanks.
Great review :) Is that a CK screwdriver?
That is a discontinued item from Gray Tools of Canada. I have a bunch of them.

What about inside?? Pity.
Looking at the build quality (or lack there of) this meter does not seem worth the over $300 - $350 mark.
and where do you see bad quality exactly?
why my fluke multimetr show f87 at start up.?
👍
looks like this is the cheapest made in the USA? 175 probably is
It's a 177 not a 117!
can you do away with the cheesy transitions?
