Please pay no attention to the trolls and haters. You made an instrument that suits your needs, it sounds weird but charming in its own way. If every musician only did what the audience wants and followed all the conventional rules, there'd be no innovation in music at all. Keep at it!
knuckztve hey thanks so much. Yeah, I’ve been an artist a long time and you have to develop a think skin. I do admit that the music gets quite noisy toward the end and It’s not really representative of the music I make. Examples of my music can be found at canopysongs.bandcamp.com
Stumbled upon this because I am just getting into the Kalimba myself. I don't think I will ever go this advanced, but kudos to you for making such a wild, crazy, and unique piece of playable art! Reminds me of the crazy set up Eric Royer has for his one man Bluegrass band that I met and assisted years ago. It's unconventional, but it works how you want it to, and that's what matters most.
I like the sounds it makes: they are cute and charming. I could see this instrument being used for sound effects in much the same way the Apprehension Engine is used.
Dude, I love it. I hate saying "haters gonna hate", but it makes itself evident here. You put so much into this, and just because it's noisey doesn't mean it isn't good. Keep it up.
Very cool, love things like this when people make more than on instrument in one piece, of course with electronic sampling and effects, can definitely make things interesting!!! Great job! However sometimes in the music itself, less is more!
Wow I love this! I don't understand these comments at all. I'm interested in building some instruments of my own this summer, and if you have any resources that helped you, I'd love to know.
Haha, welcome to the comments section of UA-cam, I guess! I do admit it gets kinda chaotic toward the end. If you live in the Baltimore area I’m conducting a class to build an electric kalimba. They are pretty simple to build, though. I use fishtape for the tines. And for the bridge I use a ground bar kit. Both those things are available at your local hardware store. Just get some nice hardwood to attach the bridge to the soundboard and you are gold. To electrify it get a pre-wired piezo and a jack. Connect them together and you can then run it through effects pedals and stuff like that. That’s pretty much it! Thanks for being cool, make musical instruments! It’s really rewarding and, I think the best thing is that nobody can tell you the appropriate way to play it so you are a born expert from the get-go.
I like this instrument, but I feel like maybe the Tamboura was a little overwhelming in it. If you could perhaps put a dampen on it, it would probably sound much better. But I don't know everything lol
Hey I'm a kalimba maker and I'm interested in making experimental kalimbas like your beast there. (well, smaller) Anyways where did you get those electrical grounding strips? I can't find ones with more than 10 holes
shalev zohar hello! Man, they work great, keeping the kalimba in tune really well. I get them from Home Depot., but I’ve also gotten a bunch on eBay. It’s called a ground bar kit. You’ll have to drill an extra hole through it, so it can be mounted with two screws. I usually bolt and epoxy mine down.
@@lordzombie Thanks, I'll look into it. I actually thought about machining custom ones, that way I can make sure they contact the ledge with tension and don't buzz. I've done some kalimbas with plastic connector bars but I needed something more rigid
Isaac Stewart thank you! Yeah. It’s the UA-cam comments section. I’m still rocking the kalimbas and I’m getting into eurorack and making ambient music!
Matt Muirhead Matt, can you drop me an email at rleary@newbedford.com I find this instrument(s) of yours fascinating. One of my first, if not the first, exposures to the kalimba was Chico Hamilton’s I Found Out on his album Head Hunters. More recently, if I recall correctly, there’s a lot of it on Terry Riley’s In C Mali. I was working this morning on some material for kids in an after-school STEAM program in electricity and electronics. I thought it might be a neat project to have the kids develop some simple musical instruments. For some reason, the kalimba popped into my head and I jumped on Google and did a search and among other things found your UA-cam video and it kind of blew my mind. I’m hoping I might be able to ask you some questions about this kalimba/tamboura/theremin instrument of yours. What part of the country are you located in by the way? I myself am in Massachusetts.
Buss bars, not triple bearing? I don't know, but piezos suck. They have a tinny sound, unless compressed or loaded partly. They cannot simply be stuck to something that vibrates. Try the tiny electret mics used a s contact mic. They work much better , with a warm not treble happy sound.
Expect for the over amount of saturation, this is perfect. I get that it's the way it's supposed to be, or at least not far from it, but it's way too much for most part of the instruments. I absolutly dig the "kind of" guitar on the right though. I'm being picky, sorry :) It's amazing what you're doing ,you'd deserve more visibility in a better world.
Jonas Bergmansson I love Colorado soundscapes! Their tunings rule! I use an off the shelf electricians ground bar kit. You can get them at Home Depot for like 6bucks.
Oh, that's good to know! I'm considering adding a kalimba bridge to the top of my guitar, will definitely check out grounding bars. Like the top row of Blue, I have also been thinking about splitting up the notes into chord sections, ever since I saw Mark Holdaway play the progression of House of the rising sun on six 5-note kalimbas. Your video is very inspirational, thank you for posting it! I think this might be my favorite elaborate instrument after Fred Carlson's sympitars, which you've got to chech out if you haven't: www.beyondthetrees.com/NDtext.html
YES! that Mark Holdaway house of the rising sun vid blew my mind! and definitly was part of my inspiration for this set up.I'm gonna check out the sympitars!
Denny Eka you are absolutely right. My demonstration neglected to use theremin. You can find examples of my instruments that do incorporate theremin on my bandcamp page canopysongs.bandcamp.com the album “Fields” has lots of chill theremin sounds.

I take it only westerners hate it. Western people need MTV to tell them it's cool. Without that. Every thing is dumb.
Guess what I have hearing issues now
@@TSCtheTHC Curious if you have saved this track to your computer and /or listen to it regularly? Why not?
this is the coolest thing ever! sounds vaguely like drone metal. I love it.
How in the name of god does someone reach this ascended level. Bruther, show me

Dude, I love it. I hate saying "haters gonna hate", but it makes itself evident here. You put so much into this, and just because it's noisey doesn't mean it isn't good. Keep it up.

**breathes heavily** DON’T SACRIFICE ME SATAN
This instrument is so awesome that selling your soul to the devil for him to help building it seems like an adequate price...
wow nice!
what are you using for a pick up on the kalimba? is it just a microphone? or the peizo? is that just mounted underneath?
it so relaxing omg

That Is So DEVO
Real musician need real instrument. And he is a true musician
It sounds like a cellphone song
you could add delays and filters... it would maybe give you a new musical inspiration
Absolutely. The naysayers haven't got any imagination. This is a brilliant set of instruments that just need to be treated gently.
D yes! My band is called Canopy and we do add effects and play through loop pedals. Canopysongs.bandcamp.com
You should add a dog fart for an encore.
Very talented, love this dude!

How were the kalimba bridges made? They look king of similar to the ones which colorado soundscapes use!

Denny Eka 1:50 It's a Optical Theremin. It uses photo resistor and light.
Denny Eka you are absolutely right. My demonstration neglected to use theremin. You can find examples of my instruments that do incorporate theremin on my bandcamp page canopysongs.bandcamp.com the album “Fields” has lots of chill theremin sounds.
