  • The Sinhalese people are an ethnic group native to Sri Lanka, an island country located in South Asia. They make up the largest ethnic group in Sri Lanka, comprising approximately 75% of the country's total population. The Sinhalese have a rich cultural heritage that dates back thousands of years, with a distinct language, religion, and traditions.
    Language:
The Sinhalese people speak Sinhala, an Indo-Aryan language that is unique to Sri Lanka. Sinhala has its own script and is widely spoken throughout the country. The language has a long literary tradition and is known for its poetic and rhythmic qualities.
    Religion:
The majority of Sinhalese people follow Theravada Buddhism, which was introduced to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE and has since become deeply ingrained in their culture and way of life. Buddhism plays a significant role in the daily lives of the Sinhalese, with many observing religious rituals and participating in Buddhist ceremonies.
    Culture and Traditions:
Sinhalese culture is diverse and vibrant, influenced by a blend of indigenous traditions, Indian cultural elements, and colonial influences. The Sinhalese people take great pride in their cultural heritage and place importance on family, community, and respect for elders.
    Art and Literature:
Sinhalese art and literature have a long history dating back to ancient times. Traditional Sinhalese art includes various forms of dance, music, painting, and sculpture. Folklore, myths, and legends are often depicted in these art forms. Sinhalese literature has produced notable works, including epic poems such as the "Mahavamsa" and "Ramayana."

It's not the Sinhalese who came from Odisha and West Bengal... It's the Sinhas...
They came to the Island of Lanka and mixed with the native Hela people... then it became...
      Sinha + Hela = Sinhala

Rubbish who told you this fairy tale? Just look at them their clothing dances features. They are typically South Indian looking and are descended from native Tamil and semi-Tamil speaking Dravidian Yakkas and Nagas, with a lot of South Indian Tamil immigrant blood mixed into them. The north Indian DNA contribution to their genetic makeup is very minimal. More than half the present-day Sinhalese are largely or purely descended from post 15TH century South Indian immigrants. From Tamil Nadu and then Tamil Kerala. Go and read the history of the Sinhalese Karawa, Salagama Durawa and many other service castes and even their so-called elite aristocrats and farmer castes are largely of South Indian origin. DNA studies have proven that the original Sinhalese and the native Sri Lankan Tamils are one and the same people. They are descended from native old Tamil or pre old Tamil speaking Dravidian tribes, who migrated from India during ancient times with some minimal genetic input from a Maratha like people from Northwest India and not from Bengal or Odisha. The ones in the south converted to Buddhism on a large scale and corrupted their ancient Tamil dialect with the Pali/Prakrit and later Sanskrit that came with Buddhism and gradually a new language and identity started to from called SInhalese from one of the ancient Tamil words for the island Chingkallam meaning the read or coppe coloured land by 7AD. This new identity and language was also encouraged by the Theravada Buddhist clergy to preserve and differentiate the ancient Tamil Buddhists, from the rest of the largely Hindu Tamils in the north and east, and in South India, especially after the fall of Buddhism. In the north and east of the island the Tamil speaking native Nagas hardly converted to Buddhism and if they converted it was largely to Mahayana Buddhism and not to Theravadha like in the South of the island but by 8AD , Tamil Buddhism had died off, therefore the ancient Tamil identity and language had survived in these areas. The oldest Tamil name for the island is Eezham or Eelam, which later was Prakritized to Hela

@@blacktamil9061💀there were Sinhalese kings before South Indian Kings came to power (there was no hair after Sri Weera Parakrama Narendrasinghe king). King විමලධර්මසූරිය (WimalaDharmaSoorya) was a pure Sinhalese and he was the founder of the Kingdom of Kandy😂 and what about අනුරාධපුර (Anuradhapura) Kingdom, පොලොන්නරුව(Polonnaruwa) Kingdom and so many kingdoms were there 😅 you just don't know about it
(some tamils and Pandyans came to power time to time such examples are King Nishshankamalla (නිෂ්ශංකමල්ල) was a Kalinga and he was one of the most respected kings of Sinhalese eventhough he wasn't Sinhalese ethnically 😂)
History is a hard subject to us. And our history is a mix of Buddhism and Hinduism
During king Dewanam Piya Tissa (දේවානම් පිය තිස්ස), King Ashoka's son monk Mahinda (මහින්ද) came to Ancient Sri Lanka and spread Buddhism

And Kingdom of Kandy's last kings were tamil Nayakkar kings (there was no hair so King' s wife brother's in laws took power who were tamils but they became Buddhist over time because in order to get to power you had to be Buddhist in Kingdom of Kandy)
