Oven chips are pre cooked with oil ETC so will naturally cook quicker. My friend’s dad who’s in his 80s is a master home made chips/roast potato maker. He always says make sure your chips are thoroughly dry before cooking, be it on an air fryer or any other way. Only when the chips are dry add your oil etc and cook away ❤️ xx
Yes, the chips must be dry. I use my salad spinner to get them very dry. Sometimes pat with a clean tea towel afterwards. For oil I've tried sunflower oil and rapeseed oil. I get better results with rapeseed oil. I haven't tried using olive oil yet, as the smoke point is lower than the other oils.

Par boil the marris pipers chips for 2 mins with a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda, rinse shake, like you do with roast potatoes, not as much obviously, then season cook for 12mins. Come out with crispy edges like the crisp on a roast potato.
We prefer home made chips in air fryer. We crinkle cut the chips, let them soak in cold water for an hour, drain and dry thoroughly, then toss in small amount of extra virgin olive oil with salt and pepper, then air fry for about 12-13 minutes. Works every time. Keep up the good work!!

Great video Kerry. With my homemade chips I soak them in some salted water for about 30 minutes then pat them dry before putting them into the air fryer to cook. Always turn out great.
I find homebase chips and fries take about 30 minutes to cook in my Innoteck 30 litre air fryer. Although I haven't worked out the cost between frozen and homemade. At the moment I'm still buying frozen chips but do make sweet potato fries from fresh fur about 25 mins with the skin on and they turn out really good. I'm addicted to sweet potatoes chips with mayonnaise too do into. They're really good YUM!
Just at a guess, I would say that the frozen chips had been par-boiled/cooked before they were packaged up and that would explain the time difference when it comes to cooking them... Just a thought.
There are notable differences in terms of quality and taste with frozen chips. In comparison tests, very rarely is like for like apparent. The ALDI’s and LIDL’s tend to use cheaper varieties, but doesn’t mean they are bad. For us, though, Waitrose, M&S and Sainsbury’s TTD offer tastier potato products because they use higher quality varieties. King Edwards, Marie’s Piper or similar cooked in good quality olive or vegetable oils may be lost with some peoples palettes. For me, though, the difference is marked.
Your home cut chips look chunkier than the frozen ones so will take a bit longer to cook. I agree with other comments- cut, soak and then freeze your chips, makes them more convenient (you could par cook before freezing as well)
Thank you for this refreshing video. About the Ramekins, a little tip (if no one has mentioned this before), which can also be used for glasses that has gotten stuck together after dishwashing; put the bottom bowl/glass in a hot bath, while putting cold water in the top bowl/glass.
I like frozen lot less hassle but I'd suggest you use inserts to 1 prolong the fryer trays and 2 no clean up.. but obviously frozen are pre cooked so take less time. For me I would shake after adding the oils and salt and add no oil with frozen but needed. 😊
I prefer to make chips fresh, also with Maris Piper, but sometimes you don't have the time for peeling, soaking and drying. So as an alternative my favourite frozen chips are Iceland crinkle cut ones. I also found that frozen chips take slightly less time to cook. As for cost, the last 2.5kg bag of Maris Piper cost £1.59 from ASDA and that amount makes a lot of chips. The crinkle cut frozen chips are £1 for 900g, but I get the 10% pensioner discount if I go on Tuesdays. By the way, I get my fresh chips super dry in the salad spinner.
God yes! So true Dianne. Chip pan fires were a real problem back in the 80s, remember my gran had one - boy her chips were good but still, the fire risk🥴
The secret for making great homemade chips, is the variety, and then soaking them in salt water, and removing the starch by washing. Leaving them in the fridge will dry them out. Make sure 5hey are evenly cut and as dry as possible. To store them in the fridge, par boil, for a few minutes, and seal in freezer bags with oil
A fun experiment and you get to eaten the results! I would recommend microwaving the raw chips for a couple of minutes and patting dry before air frying. I think you'll get a fluffier interior. From Southern California on a warm November 2nd.
For homemade chips I cut and soak in salted water for a while, drain place in a foil tray with tsp oil and herby salt cover with foil air fry for 10 min (depending on the amount) then if soft decant into the air fryer add more salt and cook for 5 mins. Cooking in foil container steams the chips and helps the oil absorb. But everyone has their own preferences and if you like the result all is good 😊
I always buy thick cut frozen and slightly defrost amount to be fried in a bowl for about 30 min at kitchen temperature. Then into fryer with the pan never more than half full. Cook for about 15 minutes at 120 and shake once during cooking. Add salt and spray with oil and return to fryer for 10-15 minutes at full power shaking the basket once or twice during cooking and checking for brown preference. This gives a nice fluffy chip with a crisp outside - try it!

Frozen chips are pre cook with canola oil, I usually do them max crisp 15min from frozen depending how you like them. Agree home made better & baked potatoes are awsome. I have AF300 dual & love your experiments.
Ooo I will have to try that thank you, one thing I've learnt theres a time for frozen chips and there's a time for homemade depending on time and convenience on the given day. If I've been working, frozen wins. If I have the day off, I've got more time to peel etc etc 😄👌I need to try baked potatoes, as yet I have not cooked that!
Great video Kerry. Interesting to see both side by side. I think I prefer home made ones. I always end up peeling and chipping the spuds, always got a bag of frozen in the freezer as a back up though. Lately I've been dicing my spuds, they tend to cook more evenly than the chip shape.

My hubby seems to prefer home cooked chips, but I prefer thin frozen ones. I like to call them French fries 🙂 Since I tasted chips from an air fryer, I really no longer like chips from a kebab shop or a fish & chips shop. They are just too greasy for me. I often eat air fryer chips, and don’t feel guilty about it ☺️ xx

Homemade all day long. When my nieces and nephews were young they preferred my homemade chips to the frozen ones their parents cooked and my grandchildren are the same and I’ve been air frying them for years (tefal and now ninja). Frozen chips are dry and claggy. Also, oven chips already have oil on and homemade chips need to be dry, I put mine back in the pan/dish used for soaking them to remove starch after drying, add oil and salt and toss the chips before putting them in the air fryer, no way will they be ready in 10 minutes ❤

That was probably the best "Ninja Fryer" chip frying video I have seen. So interesting, informative and enjoyable to watch. I have the round version, where you have to lift the lid up and then lift the basket out using a pair of oven gloves, so shaking the chips frequently, to be honest is a right pain in the backside. I shall definitely be looking out for your other videos. Thankyou.

Hi Kerry, when making homemade chips, I usually melt some beef dripping in a pan ,then pour on the chips in a bowl, shake to cover, then into air fryer,works for me.
I never add salt to chips before cooking them, and rarely after too. I prefer to have them with sauces. Frozen chips are my favourite, I like the McCain naked oven chips without the coating best.
#TopTip We put our vinegar in a garden style sprayer and mist the vinegar over the chips, this way you get the vinegar taste but they don't go soggy. We learnt this as a Chip Truck in Canada. (I found a garden sprayer top screws directly on to a Sarsons vinegar bottle).

I confess I've a vested interest - I'd love you to get one, so you can feature it on your wonderful channel, and I can get some new recipe tips from you, lol! I reckon it would get you lots more viewers, as not many UK channels are featuring the Ninja Foodi 15-in-1 (by far the best machine as it does it all). One lovely American lady called Louise has an excellent cooking channel called 'The Salted Pepper', specialising on Ninja recipes only - well worth a watch if you're curious. We could really do with a British equivalent to offer Ninja recipes for a UK palate/tastes - you would be the perfect host! Seriously, I'm not the best cook (I'm 54 now and only started cooking in my 40s, so I've a lot to learn!) but this machine makes it so quick and easy to produce umpteen different things. I particularly like the 'Steam Meals' function, which means you can produce a complete meal - meat, veg and potatoes/rice/pasta all together. And it does the best whole roast chicken I've ever had. It has a very clever built-in thermometer you just stick into your whole chicken/joint of beef/pork whatever (even steaks, as long as they're 1.5cms thick), then you use pre-set buttons to tell it what kind of meat it is and if you want it rare/med rare or well done. Then just close the lid and let it get on with the job. You don't have to set a time - the thermometer means the machine knows when it's cooked to your liking, and it switches itself off automatically. It's perfect, 'no-brainer' cooking, for a nervous amateur like me! Anyway, enough waffle from me! I just discovered your channel this week when browsing recipes, and this video was so useful for Ninja chips (I'm making them from scratch from now on!) If you drain and dry the potato's then add oil and seasonings in the bowl and mix prior to putting in air fryer it as best. Frozen chips have already been in oil and par cooked. I noticed a lot of chefs roast potato are boiled prior to roasting in air fryers or ovens this could also help with chips. James Martin shows how to make crispy roast potato's in this way seldom buy frozen chips these days since i got my Ninja to easy to do in it.
I tried par boiling the chips yesterday for 1st time with good results, always par boil potatoes for roasting in the ninja. Thanks for your input Alan👍👍
im converted airfryer rules havent used oven since i bought one and the type of potatoe you use for homade chips makes a big difference maris piper are one of the best
I make my own chips as I don't like frozen ones. When my grandson was little he wouldn't eat my chips, I had to buy frozen for him because that's what he had at home. When I make them I soak them for an hour, then pay them dry, then I coat them with olive oil and steak seasoning sometimes I add a bit of garlic salt. I cook them at 190 degrees for 22 minutes. Your dishes were nice, you could make pies, crumbles, Yorkshire puddings in them
How I do chip. I don't have an air fryer so the method is different. I chip the potatoes to julienne. Deep fry for 5 minutes at 130 degrees c, microwave at 800 watts for five minutes, deep fry at 180 degree c for 2 minute, and oven roast at 200 degrees c for 10 minutes. Perfect chips. Because I live in both the UK and France we have a Smart microwave with an air fry function, a very expensive microwave. The trouble is I don't have a deep fat fryer and an air fryer in the same place to test it out. And now you've made me wonder if I now need an air fryer in the UK and a deep fat fryer in France. I'm so glad you sided on the real potato over the oven chips. You lose so much potato flavour in frozen chips I find. Really interesting to watch.

I would recommend par boiling anything that needed to be roasted or deep fried in the potato line. That is 50 years experience with no air fryer in those days. I have noticed how expensive oven chips are nowadays so will try using real potatoes in my air fryer- after par boiling.
When i do home made chips i cut them wash them in a bowl drain leave a bit of wet in there cover with cling film microwave about 7 mins drain any excess water then keep in bowl oil toss salt pepper chilli flakes bit of paprika or what ever toss make sure all coverd then into airfryer p.s. ive also just done that tiktok thing a spaggeti lassangea obiusly cooked on hob but finished in airfryer very nice
Your homemade chip method sounds great thanks David, will def try the microwave trick. I did hm chips today for dinner, adding paprika (like your additional chilli flakes👌). They turned out fab but I bet the microwave cuts some of the Airfryer cooking time👍
i wash the potatoes, dry them, then cut them up with the peel still on them. I use my crinkle cut knife to cut up the chips. Crinkle cut chips with the skin still on them! Yum.
Like many others I make sure the chips are dry. I put them in a bowl add oil and a good sprinkling of Italian herbs 🪴 lovely. Must admit mine take longer because I like chunky chips!!!!! 🎉

I never liked oven frozen chips until we got the air fryer and now love them which is probably not a good thing 😂 they both looked nice and will definitely try some home made ones, wonder if you could get some beef dripping and give them a light coating before cooking ? Chips cooked in beef dripping are the best! They're unheard of in Southern chip shops, but I recall them on childhood holidays to Blackpool as a kid. The smell of the dripping wafted down the streets made you follow your nose to the chippie - delicious!

To separate those ramekins, put the bottom one in hot water for a few minutes. By the bottom one I mean just put them in hot water so it only covers half the bottom ramekin.
Homemade chips every time for me nowm, I've stopped buying those frozen ones. A great big bag of red spuds off the market yesterday for 4 quid, peeled and chipped just 2 spuds last night for my tea, probably cost about 50p. Delish...
Just came across your channel and find your videos really instructive and helpful. I use ramekins for mini pies, Yorkshire puddings, mini sponges or for serving dips, sauces, guacamole etc in buffets.
There is another cost to add to the frozen chips - the electric cost to keep them frozen. By doing fresh potatoes how much room can free up in the freezer for things that have to be frozen.
Best way to air fry frozen ready made chips ( Mcain are the best ) is to take them out of the freezer and let them sit on a plate for a half hour to derfost , then air fry for about 7 minutes , shaking half way through
Ever airfried left over fish and chip shop chips the next day. They taste better than on the first day. Much better crisp texture without the oiliness.
I haven't made chips in my air fryer yet but I normally like homemade crinkle chips. I might give them a go at the weekend. The last (and first) time I went to IKEA was about 10 years ago. Wasn't sure where it was so used my satnav. I eventually found it and after choosing a few items to buy I couldn't find my way out. Couldn't find the way out of the car park either. I decided it wasn't for me 😁 I go to The Range and B&M instead. I use ramekin dishes for dips and olives.

You must be a bit dim if you couldn't find you local IKEA then not find your way out of the store. Every IKEA I have ever been to has a very cleverly design one-way system that eventually leads to the exit. This is for marketing purposes to ensure that you pass through every department in the store. (a bit like Tesco placing the Smarties at child height at the till).
I don’t know if you were at the one near Birmingham, but I do sympathise, after going round In Circles and up and down floors, I also got totally lost and disoriented to where you pay, I think they do it on purpose, the payment area was like down a corridor that ended up in a large warehouse to collect your items ordered on other floors, mind boggling, but the more often you go it does get better, just don’t get separated from family otherwise your there for the day trying to find them 😂😂.

When I saw your video, I knew I had to share this... these homemade fries from scratch are pretty darn good!!! Parmesan Garlic FriesIngredients 4 large Yukon Gold potatoes 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon kosher salt ¼ cup parmesan cheese, finely grated ½ teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon parsley Instructions Rinse and scrub the potatoes under cold water. Using a sharp knife, cut potatoes into thin 1/4 inch strips. Transfer the potato strips to a large bowl, cover with ice water, and let the potatoes soak for about 30 minutes. Drain the water and pat the potatoes dry. Add oil and salt to the bowl and toss to coat. Working in batches, place potatoes into a greased air fryer basket in a single layer. (Try not to overlap.) Air fry at 380°F for 18-20 minutes, turning once halfway through. While the fries are cooking, mix together the parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and parsley in a small bowl. Remove the fries from the air fryer and toss them with the parmesan, garlic powder, and parsley mixture. Serve immediately.
Recipe sounds good but can you please explain what "Yukon Gold" potatoes are, we don't have them in the UK nor in South Africa where I now live. Also why Kosher salt?
@@Robob0027 Yukon Gold are a yellow potato - which is sold in Canada and the best one here for fries. Kosher salt here is coarse grains and contains no iodine. You could use sea salt - I use a sea salt that is produced near where I live but you couldn't get that brand either. Basically I posted a recipe for the method and the addition of parmesan and garlic powder more than any other reason.

looks great and bet taste great to. when i do air fry chips i like the use hard potatoes home cut to size of choice peeled then sock in heavy salt water in fridge. when wanted rinse with water pat dry put in large bowl and some oil of choice i like avocado then air fry . till your taste and salt . cheers
Another great video. We have both with frozen chips i cook them on max crisp and home made chips i like red potatoes soak for hour depending on amount i par boil . Drain and pat dry then toss in oil with salt and sometimes chilli flakes. Air fry for 20mins. Look forward to nxt one. Alison. Xx
Hi regards your newly purchased ramekin dishes I make breakfast egg muffins there are endless ways to add veggies mushrooms, spring onions, peppers, ham, cheese and bake for around 10 minutes, might be quicker in the air fryer. They are low fat and great for packing in lunch boxes without any guilt and they are healthy and full vitamins. x
I have never made homemade fries in my air fryer. I don’t shake them and I set my air fryer for 20 minutes at 450 in kenmore air fryer and my other on has an fry setting.

Maybe par boiling the homemade ones will greatly reduce the cooking time? However, that possibly defeats the object of using the air fryer? On another note, sausages done in the air fryer come out evenly brown, unlike slaving away frying them, especially when most have a tendency to start bending when frying , and you can't brown them all over.......just a spray of cooking/olive oil on them.
home made chips need to be cooked twice as frozen chips are already pre cooked when you purchase them. first time around cook for 5 mines at 150C then when you want to cook them to eat cook at 180c till they are a nice golden brown. Usually about 4 to 5 minutes
I use McCain French fries (skinny ones) in the ninja and they are delicious! But having said that I’m tempted to go to the home-made ones after watching your video. Thank you.

I always preheat airfryer for 5 mins and then put the chips in. No need to put oil on frozen chips as they have oil already. I prefer home made chips but usually opt for the convenience of frozen.
I do not normally preheat but will give that a go👍 frozen chips have shot up in price from 99p for 1kg to £1.59 (in lidl) always had frozen chips for convenience esp with kids. The additional oil is personal preference, frozen chips a lot better with a bit of adornment imo😄🤷♀️

I wonder if a. NIce crumble would be nice in your ramekin. Chips looked good I also agree with comment made chips made fresh do need to be really dry before cooking and will take longer as not pre cooked. Frozen ones have already been partly cooked before you cook. So may be worth checking fat content as well on the frozen ones. To be equal the fresh need maybe cooking twice to be equal. And still may have less fat that frozen ones.

Not tried chips yet only had my Speedi ninja about 5 days, as we don’t eat chips often we always eat frozen chips, but it has to be McCain French fries or McCains sweet potato chips, we don’t eat anybody else’s. They are also lower on fat, but I’ve never sprayed them with oil.
I make my own now, the price of frozen has gone up so much in the last few months it's a lot cheaper using potatoes. I've a crinkle cutter too, does a grand job. Loved using frozen chips too, they came out fab in my airfryer, miss the convenience!😄
Put the bottom bowl in some hot water. It will expand.
Oven chips are pre cooked with oil ETC so will naturally cook quicker. My friend’s dad who’s in his 80s is a master home made chips/roast potato maker. He always says make sure your chips are thoroughly dry before cooking, be it on an air fryer or any other way. Only when the chips are dry add your oil etc and cook away ❤️ xx

I never put oil on oven chips. If l want proper chips l use my Actifry.
Yes, the chips must be dry. I use my salad spinner to get them very dry. Sometimes pat with a clean tea towel afterwards. For oil I've tried sunflower oil and rapeseed oil. I get better results with rapeseed oil. I haven't tried using olive oil yet, as the smoke point is lower than the other oils.

Par boil the marris pipers chips for 2 mins with a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda, rinse shake, like you do with roast potatoes, not as much obviously, then season cook for 12mins. Come out with crispy edges like the crisp on a roast potato.

We prefer home made chips in air fryer. We crinkle cut the chips, let them soak in cold water for an hour, drain and dry thoroughly, then toss in small amount of extra virgin olive oil with salt and pepper, then air fry for about 12-13 minutes. Works every time. Keep up the good work!!

Great video Kerry. With my homemade chips I soak them in some salted water for about 30 minutes then pat them dry before putting them into the air fryer to cook. Always turn out great.

I find homebase chips and fries take about 30 minutes to cook in my Innoteck 30 litre air fryer. Although I haven't worked out the cost between frozen and homemade. At the moment I'm still buying frozen chips but do make sweet potato fries from fresh fur about 25 mins with the skin on and they turn out really good. I'm addicted to sweet potatoes chips with mayonnaise too do into. They're really good YUM!

Oven chips have already been blanched and fried once, so they are always quicker to cook.
It wasn't so much about the timings but about taste and cost😃👍homemade won on those factors

Just at a guess, I would say that the frozen chips had been par-boiled/cooked before they were packaged up and that would explain the time difference when it comes to cooking them... Just a thought.
There are notable differences in terms of quality and taste with frozen chips. In comparison tests, very rarely is like for like apparent. The ALDI’s and LIDL’s tend to use cheaper varieties, but doesn’t mean they are bad. For us, though, Waitrose, M&S and Sainsbury’s TTD offer tastier potato products because they use higher quality varieties. King Edwards, Marie’s Piper or similar cooked in good quality olive or vegetable oils may be lost with some peoples palettes.
For me, though, the difference is marked.
Your home cut chips look chunkier than the frozen ones so will take a bit longer to cook. I agree with other comments- cut, soak and then freeze your chips, makes them more convenient (you could par cook before freezing as well)

It's a good idea boiling the fresh potatoes for just ten minutes, and dry them very well before before they go into the airfryer.

About the Ramekins, a little tip (if no one has mentioned this before), which can also be used for glasses that has gotten stuck together after dishwashing; put the bottom bowl/glass in a hot bath, while putting cold water in the top bowl/glass.

I like frozen lot less hassle but I'd suggest you use inserts to 1 prolong the fryer trays and 2 no clean up.. but obviously frozen are pre cooked so take less time. For me I would shake after adding the oils and salt and add no oil with frozen but needed. 😊
I prefer to make chips fresh, also with Maris Piper, but sometimes you don't have the time for peeling, soaking and drying. So as an alternative my favourite frozen chips are Iceland crinkle cut ones. I also found that frozen chips take slightly less time to cook. As for cost, the last 2.5kg bag of Maris Piper cost £1.59 from ASDA and that amount makes a lot of chips. The crinkle cut frozen chips are £1 for 900g, but I get the 10% pensioner discount if I go on Tuesdays. By the way, I get my fresh chips super dry in the salad spinner.

God yes! So true Dianne. Chip pan fires were a real problem back in the 80s, remember my gran had one - boy her chips were good but still, the fire risk🥴
And no smell either. Air fryers are the best things ever invented and the two drawer ones even better.
Frozen chips are part-cooked before freezing, so they should cook quicker. Some brands also have a coating on Oven Chips to crisp them up.
The secret for making great homemade chips, is the variety, and then soaking them in salt water, and removing the starch by washing. Leaving them in the fridge will dry them out.
Make sure 5hey are evenly cut and as dry as possible.
To store them in the fridge, par boil, for a few minutes, and seal in freezer bags with oil
I always put my homemade chips into boiling water & boil for 2 minutes drain &dry then spray oil air fry approx 12 minutes enjoy your honestly

I would recommend microwaving the raw chips for a couple of minutes and patting dry before air frying. I think you'll get a fluffier interior.

For homemade chips I cut and soak in salted water for a while, drain place in a foil tray with tsp oil and herby salt cover with foil air fry for 10 min (depending on the amount) then if soft decant into the air fryer add more salt and cook for 5 mins. Cooking in foil container steams the chips and helps the oil absorb. But everyone has their own preferences and if you like the result all is good 😊
I always buy thick cut frozen and slightly defrost amount to be fried in a bowl for about 30 min at kitchen temperature. Then into fryer with the pan never more than half full. Cook for about 15 minutes at 120 and shake once during cooking. Add salt and spray with oil and return to fryer for 10-15 minutes at full power shaking the basket once or twice during cooking and checking for brown preference. This gives a nice fluffy chip with a crisp outside - try it!

Frozen chips are pre cook with canola oil, I usually do them max crisp 15min from frozen depending how you like them. Agree home made better & baked potatoes are awsome. I have AF300 dual & love your experiments.

Great video Kerry. Interesting to see both side by side. I think I prefer home made ones. I always end up peeling and chipping the spuds, always got a bag of frozen in the freezer as a back up though. Lately I've been dicing my spuds, they tend to cook more evenly than the chip shape.

Since I tasted chips from an air fryer, I really no longer like chips from a kebab shop or a fish & chips shop. They are just too greasy for me.

With only a tablespoon of oil, air fryer chips are much healthier than chips from the chippy.
I don't use any oil on frozen chips as they are part cooked anyway so don't need it. I also prefer frozen but would like to have a price comparison

Homemade all day long. When my nieces and nephews were young they preferred my homemade chips to the frozen ones their parents cooked and my grandchildren are the same and I’ve been air frying them for years (tefal and now ninja). Frozen chips are dry and claggy. Also, oven chips already have oil on and homemade chips need to be dry, I put mine back in the pan/dish used for soaking them to remove starch after drying, add oil and salt and toss the chips before putting them in the air fryer, no way will they be ready in 10 minutes ❤

That was probably the best "Ninja Fryer" chip frying video I have seen. So interesting, informative and enjoyable to watch. I have the round version, where you have to lift the lid up and then lift the basket out using a pair of oven gloves, so shaking the chips frequently, to be honest is a right pain in the backside. Hi Kerry, when making homemade chips, I usually melt some beef dripping in a pan ,then pour on the chips in a bowl, shake to cover, then into air fryer,works for me.
That sounds flippin delish Gary, beef and lamb tend to be off the menu due to cost thou, otherwise I would definitely save some of the fat for cooking

I never add salt to chips before cooking them, and rarely after too. I prefer to have them with sauces. Frozen chips are my favourite, I like the McCain naked oven chips without the coating best.
#TopTip We put our vinegar in a garden style sprayer and mist the vinegar over the chips, this way you get the vinegar taste but they don't go soggy. We learnt this as a Chip Truck in Canada. (I found a garden sprayer top screws directly on to a Sarsons vinegar bottle).

I confess I've a vested interest - I'd love you to get one, so you can feature it on your wonderful channel, and I can get some new recipe tips from you, lol! I reckon it would get you lots more viewers, as not many UK channels are featuring the Ninja Foodi 15-in-1 (by far the best machine as it does it all).
One lovely American lady called Louise has an excellent cooking channel called 'The Salted Pepper', specialising on Ninja recipes only - well worth a watch if you're curious. We could really do with a British equivalent to offer Ninja recipes for a UK palate/tastes - you would be the perfect host!
Seriously, I'm not the best cook (I'm 54 now and only started cooking in my 40s, so I've a lot to learn!) but this machine makes it so quick and easy to produce umpteen different things.
I particularly like the 'Steam Meals' function, which means you can produce a complete meal - meat, veg and potatoes/rice/pasta all together. And it does the best whole roast chicken I've ever had.
It has a very clever built-in thermometer you just stick into your whole chicken/joint of beef/pork whatever (even steaks, as long as they're 1.5cms thick), then you use pre-set buttons to tell it what kind of meat it is and if you want it rare/med rare or well done. Then just close the lid and let it get on with the job. You don't have to set a time - the thermometer means the machine knows when it's cooked to your liking, and it switches itself off automatically. It's perfect, 'no-brainer' cooking, for a nervous amateur like me!
Anyway, enough waffle from me! I just discovered your channel this week when browsing recipes, and this video was so useful for Ninja chips (I'm making them from scratch from now on!) I'll be binge-watching your other videos over the weekend. Keep up the excellent work Kerry & thanks again. X
If you drain and dry the potato's then add oil and seasonings in the bowl and mix prior to putting in air fryer it as best. Frozen chips have already been in oil and par cooked. I noticed a lot of chefs roast potato are boiled prior to roasting in air fryers or ovens this could also help with chips. James Martin shows how to make crispy roast potato's in this way seldom buy frozen chips these days since i got my Ninja to easy to do in it.
I tried par boiling the chips yesterday for 1st time with good results, always par boil potatoes for roasting in the ninja. Thanks for your input Alan👍👍
im converted airfryer rules havent used oven since i bought one and the type of potatoe you use for homade chips makes a big difference maris piper are one of the best
I make my own chips as I don't like frozen ones. When my grandson was little he wouldn't eat my chips, I had to buy frozen for him because that's what he had at home. When I make them I soak them for an hour, then pay them dry, then I coat them with olive oil and steak seasoning sometimes I add a bit of garlic salt. I cook them at 190 degrees for 22 minutes. Your dishes were nice, you could make pies, crumbles, Yorkshire puddings in them
How I do chip. I don't have an air fryer so the method is different. I chip the potatoes to julienne. Deep fry for 5 minutes at 130 degrees c, microwave at 800 watts for five minutes, deep fry at 180 degree c for 2 minute, and oven roast at 200 degrees c for 10 minutes. Perfect chips. Because I live in both the UK and France we have a Smart microwave with an air fry function, a very expensive microwave. The trouble is I don't have a deep fat fryer and an air fryer in the same place to test it out. And now you've made me wonder if I now need an air fryer in the UK and a deep fat fryer in France. I'm so glad you sided on the real potato over the oven chips. You lose so much potato flavour in frozen chips I find. Really interesting to watch.

I would recommend par boiling anything that needed to be roasted or deep fried in the potato line. That is 50 years experience with no air fryer in those days. I have noticed how expensive oven chips are nowadays so will try using real potatoes in my air fryer- after par boiling.

When i do home made chips i cut them wash them in a bowl drain leave a bit of wet in there cover with cling film microwave about 7 mins drain any excess water then keep in bowl oil toss salt pepper chilli flakes bit of paprika or what ever toss make sure all coverd then into airfryer p.s. ive also just done that tiktok thing a spaggeti lassangea obiusly cooked on hob but finished in airfryer very nice
Your homemade chip method sounds great thanks David, will def try the microwave trick. I did hm chips today for dinner, adding paprika (like your additional chilli flakes👌). They turned out fab but I bet the microwave cuts some of the Airfryer cooking time👍
i wash the potatoes, dry them, then cut them up with the peel still on them. I use my crinkle cut knife to cut up the chips. Crinkle cut chips with the skin still on them! Yum.

Like many others I make sure the chips are dry. I put them in a bowl add oil and a good sprinkling of Italian herbs 🪴 lovely. Must admit mine take longer because I like chunky chips!!!!! 🎉

Chips cooked in beef dripping are the best! They're unheard of in Southern chip shops, but I recall them on childhood holidays to Blackpool as a kid. The smell of the dripping wafted down the streets made you follow your nose to the chippie - delicious!

To separate those ramekins, put the bottom one in hot water for a few minutes. By the bottom one I mean just put them in hot water so it only covers half the bottom ramekin.

Homemade chips every time for me nowm, I've stopped buying those frozen ones. A great big bag of red spuds off the market yesterday for 4 quid, peeled and chipped just 2 spuds last night for my tea, probably cost about 50p. Delish...
Just came across your channel and find your videos really instructive and helpful.
I use ramekins for mini pies, Yorkshire puddings, mini sponges or for serving dips, sauces, guacamole etc in buffets.
There is another cost to add to the frozen chips - the electric cost to keep them frozen. By doing fresh potatoes how much room can free up in the freezer for things that have to be frozen.
Best way to air fry frozen ready made chips ( Mcain are the best ) is to take them out of the freezer and let them sit on a plate for a half hour to derfost , then air fry for about 7 minutes , shaking half way through

I haven't made chips in my air fryer yet but I normally like homemade crinkle chips. I might give them a go at the weekend. The last (and first) time I went to IKEA was about 10 years ago. Wasn't sure where it was so used my satnav. I eventually found it and after choosing a few items to buy I couldn't find my way out. Couldn't find the way out of the car park either. I decided it wasn't for me 😁 I go to The Range and B&M instead. I use ramekin dishes for dips and olives.

You must be a bit dim if you couldn't find you local IKEA then not find your way out of the store. Every IKEA I have ever been to has a very cleverly design one-way system that eventually leads to the exit. This is for marketing purposes to ensure that you pass through every department in the store. (a bit like Tesco placing the Smarties at child height at the till).
I don’t know if you were at the one near Birmingham, but I do sympathise, after going round In Circles and up and down floors, I also got totally lost and disoriented to where you pay, I think they do it on purpose, the payment area was like down a corridor that ended up in a large warehouse to collect your items ordered on other floors, mind boggling, but the more often you go it does get better, just don’t get separated from family otherwise your there for the day trying to find them 😂😂.

When I saw your video, I knew I had to share this... these homemade fries from scratch are pretty darn good!!! Parmesan Garlic FriesIngredients
4 large Yukon Gold potatoes
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon kosher salt
¼ cup parmesan cheese, finely grated
½ teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon parsley
Instructions
Rinse and scrub the potatoes under cold water.
Using a sharp knife, cut potatoes into thin 1/4 inch strips.
Transfer the potato strips to a large bowl, cover with ice water, and let the potatoes soak for about 30 minutes.
Drain the water and pat the potatoes dry.
Add oil and salt to the bowl and toss to coat.
Working in batches, place potatoes into a greased air fryer basket in a single layer. (Try not to overlap.)
Air fry at 380°F for 18-20 minutes, turning once halfway through.
While the fries are cooking, mix together the parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and parsley in a small bowl.
Remove the fries from the air fryer and toss them with the parmesan, garlic powder, and parsley mixture. Serve immediately.

Recipe sounds good but can you please explain what "Yukon Gold" potatoes are, we don't have them in the UK nor in South Africa where I now live. Also why Kosher salt?
@@Robob0027 Yukon Gold are a yellow potato - which is sold in Canada and the best one here for fries. Kosher salt here is coarse grains and contains no iodine. You could use sea salt - I use a sea salt that is produced near where I live but you couldn't get that brand either. Basically I posted a recipe for the method and the addition of parmesan and garlic powder more than any other reason.

Thank you Doug, both make excellent chips imo, poss rooster might be better than maris piper by a small margin - where I shop (lidl) it doesn't have rooster - plus MP make delish roasties as well 😀👍👍

looks great and bet taste great to. when i do air fry chips i like the use hard potatoes home cut to size of choice peeled then sock in heavy salt water in fridge. when wanted rinse with water pat dry put in large bowl and some oil of choice i like avocado then air fry . till your taste and salt . cheers

Another great video. We have both with frozen chips i cook them on max crisp and home made chips i like red potatoes soak for hour depending on amount i par boil . Drain and pat dry then toss in oil with salt and sometimes chilli flakes. Air fry for 20mins. Look forward to nxt one. Alison. Xx

When I do frozen chips I don't use oil but maybe spray a little, but choose chips on fryer and shake half way that's it.

Hi regards your newly purchased ramekin dishes I make breakfast egg muffins there are endless ways to add veggies mushrooms, spring onions, peppers, ham, cheese and bake for around 10 minutes, might be quicker in the air fryer. They are low fat and great for packing in lunch boxes without any guilt and they are healthy and full vitamins. x

I have never made homemade fries in my air fryer. I don’t shake them and I set my air fryer for 20 minutes at 450 in kenmore air fryer and my other on has an fry setting.
Hey, I have just bought air fryer and thank you for trying out frozen vs home made. If you buy a chip from a shop in Australia, that where I am from, they cook it in super fry oil that will harden up you arteries hehe 😉 thanks for you show regards Ray 😉

I reckons with them stuck ramekins, sit 'em in 2 inch's of warm water, the bottom one should expand. Do'nt know, just a guess.

Maybe par boiling the homemade ones will greatly reduce the cooking time? However, that possibly defeats the object of using the air fryer?
On another note, sausages done in the air fryer come out evenly brown, unlike slaving away frying them, especially when most have a tendency to start bending when frying , and you can't brown them all over.......just a spray of cooking/olive oil on them.
Totally agree about the sausages. A heck of a lot better than frying them on the stovetop.

home made chips need to be cooked twice as frozen chips are already pre cooked when you purchase them. first time around cook for 5 mines at 150C then when you want to cook them to eat cook at 180c till they are a nice golden brown. Usually about 4 to 5 minutes
I don't think you need to add oil to the frozen chips I never do, and they come out nice and crispy.
Crinkle cut chips with a bit of buttery one cal spray on are the best!

I always preheat airfryer for 5 mins and then put the chips in. No need to put oil on frozen chips as they have oil already.
I prefer home made chips but usually opt for the convenience of frozen.
I do not normally preheat but will give that a go👍 frozen chips have shot up in price from 99p for 1kg to £1.59 (in lidl) always had frozen chips for convenience esp with kids. The additional oil is personal preference, frozen chips a lot better with a bit of adornment imo😄🤷♀️

I wonder if a. NIce crumble would be nice in your ramekin. Chips looked good I also agree with comment made chips made fresh do need to be really dry before cooking and will take longer as not pre cooked. Frozen ones have already been partly cooked before you cook. So may be worth checking fat content as well on the frozen ones. To be equal the fresh need maybe cooking twice to be equal. And still may have less fat that frozen ones.

Not tried chips yet only had my Speedi ninja about 5 days, as we don’t eat chips often we always eat frozen chips, but it has to be McCain French fries or McCains sweet potato chips, we don’t eat anybody else’s. They are also lower on fat, but I’ve never sprayed them with oil.
I make my own now, the price of frozen has gone up so much in the last few months it's a lot cheaper using potatoes. I've a crinkle cutter too, does a grand job. Loved using frozen chips too, they came out fab in my airfryer, miss the convenience!😄
