Tiny but POWERFUL Sony Camera

- I am amazed with the cool shots I was able to get with such a tiny, affordable camera. It's not perfect, and some of it's flaws are annoying, but for some the pros might outweigh the cons.
Full name of the camera is Sony DSC-V1. The filter I am using is called the Kolari IR Chrome filter. The filter adapter is some generic one. Just Google "Sony DSC-V1 filter adapter".
Strong magnet I am using: ebay.us/ZTPMs2

21 of these cameras sold on ebay today. But only two sold in the five days previous. Every time you make one of these videos you influence a lot of collectors!
That's crazy. I've looked at those ebay reports before though, and it does work like that (not just with me, other YT videos too. I made a whole video diving into the data xD)
@@snappiness I'll have to check out that video! I only found your channel recently. But yeah, I've seen it happen with old obscure PC games and VHS tapes. A game will be relatively unknown for 20 years and barely sell, then a UA-camr will make a video about its odd history and all of the copies will get grabbed up.
Must admit that I got one of those 🙂
I see $50. For the love of god, you eBay sellers better not raise the price bro! Seriously!
The cameras will hold around that price, but the memory sticks will be the real expense!
@@asmcinn I agree. I just don’t want these cameras to get overhyped to some ridiculous price , it ruins it for everyone. Of course, that is no fault to our boy Snappiness. And yeah, the proprietary memory stick will always be more expensive. Some Cybershots out there even a certain usb cable to allow transferring.
@@aaronmoore3050 chill bro, don’t say things like that 😭
@@kevinblanco3244it’s already $190 now
@@asmcinn aren't there memory stick SD card adapters? I've had good experiences with those and PSPs of all variants.
you can buy the memorystick with micro sd adapter built into in
well well well, I may have to try that out..
Yes but If it's old memorystickproduo or just pro it'll only accept up to 4gig SDs irrc
@@thelemon5069 Don't worry - it's a 5 megapixel camera - 4Gb is a lot of photos!
@@snappiness definetly do so, makes using these old camera a million times easier to work with
Before watching,
This camera holds so many memories
Basically all of my childhood pics were taking on it by my family.
I am really shocked about how good the pictures are by todays standard.
In good lighting, They really don’t look like a 20+ years old camera!
Buy it now before eBay prices shoot up
@@ej_tech i still have it!
Similar experience here! My dad used it for a while, then he passed it down to me, and I used it a ton. I just took it out of storage a couple weeks ago, but the CCD is dying. :(
My family camera!!!! My dad bought it in 2003, soo many memories, it still works but the battery works for like 20 minutes
your love for old cameras = my love for my money
The shot with the mailbox and house in the back, surrounded by red, is really excellent
That's just composition, nothing to do with the camera really
I don't get why other cameras don't have removable hot mirrors. If they placed it a few mm in front of the sensor it would also prevent dust from getting on the sensor and giving these annoying spots.
Same, they are reducing its potential
If you think like an engineer you might not want the chance of a refraction.
@@JJARCHIE I have a clip-in protective filter in my Sony A7R II camera, which is also a few mm in front of the sensor. Never seen any negative effects on image quality.
@@Ni5ei image quality will be worst , but i do agree not to a large degree that its noticeable.
Fun fact: you can use a variable neutral density filter as a continuous color-to-IR blend!
Update: you mentioned that lmao
This video makes me want to go out there and shoot more with my Sony DSC-V3. I've had it for a while but I've been using other digicams such as my Canon PowerShot G6 and Sony DSC-S85. The laser AF on the V3 is so cool and reminds me of your video on the F717, and the test shots I took look very promising. Sony's designs for their CyberShot cameras were something else, with all of their unique product lines for different ideas.
I filed a segment with the laser AF and forgot to include it haha dangit. It is a really fun party trick
@@snappinessPerhaps you can upload it in shorts! I rhink that would be perfect. I have a DSC-V3 which does all of the same things as the V1, but with a slightly wider angle lens (34mm equiv.) and can shoot 14-bit A/D RAW conversion.
Thank you for covering this filter. I had put off buying the IR chrome but you inspired me to pick one up. I’ve tried it on several full spectrum modified bodies and I’m finding the best results on my SDQH with the teal and orange preset. If you still have your Sigma SD Quattro H, I definitely recommend popping out that IR cut filter and giving it a try with the Kolari IR chrome. It’s my favorite Kodachrome setup so far.
I still need to try it with the filter on. I've only done it without. Good to hear your results!
I once tried to take pictures with my A7ii while riding my bike on a group ride. Someone stopped really quick in front of me and I only had my left hand available which unfortunately corresponded with the front brakes. I flew over the front of the bike and smashed the camera on the asphalt. Somehow, even with the lens popping off the body, it was fine. Nothing broken! I got lucky, but suffice to say, you're right in being cautious about your camera choice while riding! Great video as usual!
еще один приятный бонус, это была не А7-4, я сомневаюсь что она пережила бы похожий удар
Thank you for posting this hack, I've always been curious about trying ir photography. I am absolutely blown away after trying this with my F707 and it worked!
Awesome video Snaps! Great little camera! Love to see some of these hidden gems get the limelight again! Thanks for sharing!
Want a good recommendation? Try the DSC-H9 :) it also has a IR "hack" and the pictures come out _in focus_ somehow.
There are two types of hacks, one that require you to disassemble the entire camera and it's a permanent mod that removes the nightshot mode and one that, with a bit of trial and error, allow you to use the full IR capabilities without even opening the camera... With a catch, 1/6 of the frame is blacked out.
The second mod i discovered by trying to find a way to shoot IR without losing the nightshot mode because I also use it in some projects, and requires you to put the switch in a pretty specific position that removes the filter without pressing a tiny little button inside the camera that detects the filter's position. I can share a few pictures if you want, I just slap a simple Y2 58mm(IIRC) yellow filter with a bit of a hack requiring a small amount of electrical tape and voilá, full spectrum/infrared!
I absolutely love those pictures, all the foliage becomes a deep, rich purple and the sky turns a bright, vivid cyan. It's perfect honestly.
HMM Its sounds like h7 - h50 and hx1 also!
@@DVAmarkera ok, let's talk about em:
The HX1 togeder with the H7 does not have nightshot mode, the HX1 has a "twilight mode" that takes six photos in a fraction of a second, aligns, merge and then remove the noise of the final shot, it doesn't use infrared nor physically "flip out" the hot mirror like the H5 and H9. Sadly...
Now the H7 was launched as a H9 "lite", as in less stuff in it- and well... That stuff was the flip-out screen and the _nightshot mode_ , so they are basically identical except for those two thing IIRC.
Now the H50... Hummm, I've researched their capacity to shoot infrared on those ancient photography forums and discovered that you can do the permanent mod like you do in the H9, but I don't know if you can put the switch "just right" as to remove the mirror without triggering the nightshot mode. BUT on the good side, it seems like it is _considerably_ easier to disassemble and mod it compared to the burden that is disassembling the H9.
So yeah, it's possible that this mod can also work with the H50!
I have a couple manual focus lenses. Thank goodness for focus peaking. The only IR camera I have is a trail cam. I use it to detect if anyone enters my room when I am not home. It works good. It looks mono in the dark and color in the light.
I love my IR setup on the GXR S10 but would definitely love to try other options it's great fun. Shots look amazing
i have two of them. One I got for $2 at a church thrift store and the other I got at a flea market for $5. both had the charging cords, batteries (One of them came with 2 batteries), memory sticks (256mb for both), and one even came with a bag. I bought the extension tube for threaded filters, and this thing is super fun.
Have had a concept rolling around in my head for years that this camera could be perfect for. With such a low barrier to entry, I had to snatch one up. I am looking forward to giving this a try and seeing how it fits my needs. Wonderful video as usual. Thank you for the recommendation
You can work around the focus issue while maintaining full manual control. It’s been awhile so some of what I describe might be slightly off but if you unscrew the filter adapter just enough to reenable zoom, zoom in somewhere between 2&4 steps and you will be able to focus to infinity again!
A snappiness camera I’ve bought before a video came out! The memory cards are annoyingly expensive, but I got a really good price on a very well used copy of it. Such a neat camera with the IR modes and I think the lens is great for what it is.
A hack regarding the memory stick situation:
Memory Stick have different sizes. The long one (pro) is hard to find an adapter for. At least in Sweden. The difference between "pro" and "duo" is the length of the card. A microsSD to duo adapter is cheap and can be modified with some tape and a piece of plastic to fit the longer "pro" format.
Awesome stuff! I wish more camera manufacturers would give the option to move the IR block filter out of the way, and without locking manual exposure settings the way some of these compacts do.
Totally!
Another inspirational video. I have a small camera set-up for my EDC cycle riding, an Olympus EPM2 with a Lumix 12-32 zoom bolted-on. The Olympus body cost just £55 on Ebay, has a 16gb sensor and the shutter/IBIS from a Oly EM-5. Cons are the camera's relative slowness, but focus is great (as long as it is not too dark) and the resultant photos are sharp with plenty of dynamic range, oh, plus it's pocketatable too, a super bargain and a very viable photographic companion.
That's a great setup. I love those tiny m43 cameras and the lenses are the best
I really hope some day, some camera brand will give us an on/off infrared filter switch. Something like the Ricoh GR would be great.
That would be insane. Do it, Ricoh. (Jk, Ricoh doesn't listen to me lol)
This was my first return to digital from film when I wanted a digital camera that worked and looked like a film rangefinder. I would say my first of the digicam crazy back in 2019. Got mine for like $20. I next got the V3 for its larger screen. Love them both dearly. Sony's best colors SOOC IMHO.
Pretty cool - I don’t remember that camera, but it may have been just before I got serious about photography.
Im getting one, that night vision mode is just too cool
If you dont want to hunt down an old Sony Memory stick and then having to find a way to extract your photos. You could try getting an "Memory Stick PRO Duo" adapter that converts the full size Memory Stick to the smaller, familiar size you'll find on PSP and on the other end, put a PRO Duo to Micro SD adapter on there.
Yes I know, that's like two whole generations worth of jumps through different formats and then a standard....
In a dude playing a dude playing another dude , dude
I had no idea that Sony made smaller cameras with Night Shot. This one’s really cool!
You are taking me back. I had all the V series cameras. The V-3 is a lot better, just put it in night shot mode, shoot in raw, and add a 8 stop ND filter on the front with an adapter :).
the v3 also has a sensor that doesn't fail as commonly
Literally found one of these yesterday at an estate sale but didn’t pick it up because it didn’t have a charger with it and I saw I could get complete one on eBay for a reasonable price.
I know I'm in the minority but I've never had a desire to shoot infrared. Perhaps because B&W was always my preferred mode of photography - nature or architecture.
However, I clicked on this segment because I have a love for what is now called a "digi cam" by millennials, the 1st 5 or 10 years of personal digital cameras.
I went with Nikon in this era before I went to Canon powershots by 2005. The Nikon did not have any manual controls and I did feel limited.
Grear video for an affordable camera for those interested in infrared!
Абсолютно согласен. + Никто не мешает пользователю имитировать разную пленку на обработке дома, тем более с инструкциями здесь 2023 и позднее
Wait, this camera can do all this? Wtf? I found one of these a few years ago at a thrift store and totally missed that it could do night shots LOL. Guess I will need to play with it more now lol
Even the see in the dark with the IR flashlight even pretty cool in and of itself
Unfortunately, many of these cameras have a defective sensor. There was a time when Sony replaced ceramics with plastic (?) and many sensors failed after a few years. I've had cameras like that myself. A SONY V1 has survived to this day.
A lot was squeezed into the amera, so that only a very tiny battery fit in the device.
Sony system flashes and Lanc controllers can even be connected.
Really need camera hack. I dealt with the IR blur on point and shoot cameras for years but recently switched to a mirrorless body and it's night and day different. I'm not used to everything being so sharp.
They're always super cheap, UNTIL SNAPPINESS MAKES A VIDEO ABOUT IT 😭💸😅 jkjk, it's so cool to learn about your finds!
I had the DSC-V3 and it was a great little camera (well a lot bigger than than the V1). It would make a good choice. In the end, I got rid of the V3 because low light image noise made it pretty useless in low light. It would go to ISO800 but ISO400 was stretching it.
Too bad about the AF issues when using the magnet hack... that would be a deal breaker for me. Back in the day I used an R72 IR filter on my Nikon D70s to get pink trees in color and white trees when converted to B&W. The D70s (and probably other cameras of that era) let a lot of IR light onto the sensor, so it worked out quite nicely.
You can work around the focus by slightly unscrewing the adapter to reenable zoom. Then you zoom in a few clicks and can once again focus to infinity.
Great review! Just pulled the trigger on a working V3 with extra battery for under 50 shipped so we will see how this goes.
Cool, let me know. I'm gonna start using my V3 now too and see.
hey, i don't know if it will help but maybe if you focus before removing the ir filter you will get better results. as you said, the focus is linked to the ir filter. so it might be worth a try!
If it weren't for the fact I have two dedicated IR cameras AND just won an auction for an F828, I might grab one of these. As fun as it sounds, it does sound like it can be a LITTLE frustrating with this camera in particular to use IR. Otherwise, sounds like a fun PNS camera to have for fairly a fairly inexpensive cost.
Oh that’s cool! It has the same feature as the F717
Magnet! Genius
Love my old cybershot bro, sony made fantastic compact cameras at that time.
Spent more on the Chrome filter than the 2 cameras I bet.
the dsc-v3 was my first camera, I've been meaning to try some IR with it. I've done some reading in the past and never came across anyone mentioning the focus issue you're describing so hopefully it's different. I'm definitely gonna have to commit to getting an IR filter now!
There's lots of cheap ones on eBay that are fun to play with without any serious commitment!
Do you have a good recommendation/ place to find the magnet you need for the Hot Filter hack? I own one of the bridge cameras that support the "Magnet Trick" (A Sony F828 which you also covered in the past and linked) but haven't had a chance to try it out/ know where to get a magnet that was sufficiently powerful enough to pull it off without being too powerful to damage the camera.
The Samsung EX1 and EX2 are sensitive to infrared and can be easily turned into IR cameras with a filter, BTW.
I've done that with my EX1 before! It's not quite sensitive enough for what I like to do, but worked nicely for black and white for me
Try the FOTGA adjustable filters. There are some very intriguing color shifts possible with them.
I've never seen those before. Thank you, I'll check them out!
i own the v3. great little camera. got it for around $50. gonna have to try the infrared hack.
I'll be trying that next!
@@snappiness ill stay tuned!
7:32 you can get an adapter (MSAC-M2) to Pro Duo cards, and then another adapter (B07F68FCHD) to Micro SD cards
That might be worth trying!
Just ordered one from Mercari.
Took a screenshot of 6:37 at 1080p and sent it over to Photoshop... The out of focus shots aren't so bad that they can't be fixed with a slight bit of Unsharp Mask...
DSC T1 was my jam
You should do a video on older Lumix digicams like the ZS5
You had my attention until you got to the point about this camera not shooting RAW. One of the easiest Olympus cameras to convert to full spectrum IR is the E-PL2. I purchased mine for £25. I'm sure in the States you can get one as cheap if you hunt around. The E-PL2 is a far superior camera, 12mp and of course will take both new lenses and shoots RAW. Buy that instead.
Did you do the conversion yourself? I've never actually converted a camera myself (well, I guess technically if you see my Mamiya ZD hack, my Polaroid iM1836 hack, but not in the traditional sense). I'd like to try my hand at that one day on a proper camera like the E-PL2.
@@snappiness the E-PL2 is one of the easiest conversions to do. The interior of the camera is nice and simple.
@@tomfenn7149 awesome, good to know!
i wonder if mine's floating around somewhere...this was my first digital camera as i recall nearing the end of my film days - expensive as heck back then but it's specs were better than most of the other digicams i was looking at, kinda regret selling it, might have been cool to play around with it now
есть много фотокамер от Сони с которыми вы можете поиграть. Например h5-h7-h9-h50 and hx1. p200... h20..
Do you know if the magnet trick works also in the V3 or only in the V1 version?
OOOH!! This is really great to know! I have a Sony Handicam that has nightshot. I'm gonna see if I am able to do this same trick with that camcorder as well. That would be awesome! Wish me luck!
Which model is that? I would be really curious if it works! I haven't played with camcorders at all yet. Seems like a rabbit hole to go down someday.
@@snappinessTons of Sony handycams manufactured between 1998-2012 have a very good chance they will feature nightshot (except for the very lowest end of models as well as pocket-size models) - but only the very earliest of handycams (pre- august 1998?) allow you full exposure with nightshot enabled, as this is in part to a recall made by sony where these very early handycams can see through thin clothing in broad daylight. After the recall, every Sony camera & camcorder made after that period still featured nightshot, but was limited to 1/30s shutter speed at the fastest, so you can't use it in daylight.
I've gotten f707 for this reason. didnt knew there are smaller sony cameras that do that
Ooo another infared to add to my collection
Can you focus first and then use the magnet to drop the filter?
Guh that clear pentax. My dream baby
Could you do a review of the Olympus C-7000?
The DSC V1 looks like it has TIF format available. Might improve the quality.
Have you figured out any workaround for the focusing? AF is very hit or miss with my DSC-V3 as well.
3:30 Elikon Autofocus? Nice :) I bought one for like 10 bucks, but it turned out to be defective and only a third of shots I took were actually taken. Others were blanks.
That's so weird... Someone else just said these had sensor failures sometimes, I had no idea
@@snappinessThat's because the DSC-V1 is featured in a long list of defective CCD sensors made by Sony between 2003 and early 2005. Some models are more prone to sensor failure than others (the V1 seemingly being the lesser). You can find it on imaging resource. Thankfully the DSC-V3 does not seem to be one of those affected models, and I haven't found any such affected examples yet scrolling thru eBay (for sale & sold).
My unit is working perfectly (aside from dirty oxidized contacts that can be remedied with DeOxit faderlube), and seems to have been a store display/demo model as it still had the original feature list tags on it, and is in very good condition.
maybe you could crack the software and make the nightshift mode full color
What’s the thread size for the lens attachment??? I just ordered a camera on eBay 😅
Couldn’t you stop down and get focus with manual focus, with a deep enough depth of field?
After buying an old Sony compact, starting to look at what else is cheap and fun.
I wonder if it's possible to create a custom firmware to add a color option for the IR mode.
There's a cool idea
Good price for the capability
But bad battery life and fussy focus are not things I want on a bike ride. And they totally make cages for the Sigma.
Granted I’m not into the kind of cycling with the spandex and so on so I might have a different perception of bulk. I ride with an Xt2 with the grip on a shoulder strap so I can grab quick urban stuff and ride off before anybody gets upset-
And yes I have crashed on the bike, twice-camera was fine both times
5:43 isn't the meat holding the camera responsible for manual focus though? I guess seeing on that tiny screen would suck but still.
Can't do much for the chromatic aberration besides filtering the other colors out.
Yeah probably to hard to judge focus on that tiny LCD screen. Probably with trial and error you could nail down a good manual focus zone for general landscape type IR shots.
It's a step system, and at infinity it only focuses maybe 15-20 feet out. You can't manual focus beyond that.
@@snappiness that's a pretty janky focus system, almost defeats the point of manual focus.
@@snappiness Thank you for the clarification, that is unfortunate but I guess it is to be expected considering the camera and trying to use it outside of its intended use.
@@deltacx1059 well, to be fair it works fine normally, just not when you attack the camera with a strong magnet 🧲 😅
Would you recommend paying a little more to get the DSC-V3 over the DSC-V1? Or just go with the DSC-V?
I am not sure yet as I'm just starting to use the V3. I actually got my V3 for almost the same price ($35 for one) so maybe the bigger screen and more megapixels alone is worth it.
@@snappiness What a steal! I'll have to keep my eyes peeled

There are cameras today with sensors larger than that back screen 😛
Lol! It really is almost impossible to really tell what's happening on it .. the optical tunnel viewfinder is also super tiny and does not work well with glasses 🤓
Is the adapter the 52mm or 58mm one?
I own It and i have the big sister dsc-v3 good jpgs or TIFF.
Cool, I haven't even taken a shot with the V3 it just arrived. Can't wait

That's a Lauf Seigla.
@@snappiness very nice, their suspension forks are beautifully designed! I've got a Canyon Grizl.
this is ingenious but surely this model has a third party firmware that can accomplish what you want, sans magnet? my sony handheld of the same era had third party rom that also enabled RAW shooting
Can this magnet trick be used on the DSC V3 as well??
yes and another cameras from sony at that time
Yes! So the ones off the top of my head that work with the same hack:
Sony V1
Sony v3
Sony f717

Okay so my next question is where do you place the magnet on the DSC V3?? I love the camera! I have two of them lol
I would put it in nightshot and use a ND and filter to get IR like results, but I wanna try this method very badly!
Sadly mine turns on but the files are corrupted, no image on it
Well shoot! Not sure what would cause that...
Is there anyway I can do something with the Panasonic dmc-tz5
