      There were 4 different incidents over its 30 year lifespan. The ride needed a refurbishment. The park instead replaced the boats and did minor repairs and touch ups. The main issue was the lack of concern over the age of the ride. Water rides need constant maintenance and service intervals. These rides are money pits. Parks buy rides that can have a high rider per hr. This ride had a very high rider per hr. The only problem is the costs don’t start getting ridiculous until they hit 5 years old. It then becomes an expensive mess. I can see why a lackadaisical attitude surrounded this ride because it was so common to have problems and breakdowns.

      I just watched another video that stated that the park designed the ride themselves; it wasn’t built by a contracted company like most rides are (I think that’s the right term) and so there were many features that were not industry standard. Your comment is very good food for thought, though - I’m from the US myself and never would have thought that anything but actual treadmill-like conveyor belts were used in rides like this.

      Both Disney World's Kali River Rapids and Disneyland's Grizzly River Run have slat style systems very similar to this ride. However you can see at 3:15 it looks like they only installed every 3rd slat. That was the problem. I also live in the US and I've actually never seen one like a treadmill rubber mat so it's interesting you said that.

      This ride was built and desighnded very well but they didn't very little maintaining the water pump was broken so not enough water the staff were told about the problems on the morning of the accident and the staff was brand new and had no idea what she was doing...it was criminal negligence on the part of the maintance crew and park manager...it was 100%not the rides or designers fault...pure lack of maintaining it.

    There is an amazing detail shown on this video. The mount spacing for the wood planks that make up the conveyer are sufficient to create a fairly flat surface IF they were all installed but they clearly are not. The planks were installed every 4th mount. Had they all been in place at the time of the accident I don't think the spacing would allow for any size person to fall through. Maybe a limb but it would have at least limited the scope of injury. I also doubt if the boat would have even capsized in the first place if planks were not missing. There would not be sufficient space between the beams to grab and submerge the boat. Heck, maybe it was even tested as a failure mode by the designer. My sympathy to the families and friends of those involved.

      They actually removed every third slat to make the belt lighter as it was having issues tripping out. This was one of the contributing factors as it allowed the conveyor to grab the boat and pull it under. I just finished reading the report.

I smashed my face on the back of the seat in front on the log ride when it hit the water, and had a bloody nose, and the staff’s only concern was shuffling me off past the people waiting in the queue to go next (looking at me with horrified faces).

    Just watching this you can see the truth that Dreamland failed to do even a cursory Risk Assessment Analysis when they cobbled this dangerous horror together. Remember they didn’t buy off the shelf. This wasn’t an Intamin ride. They looked at Intamin’s and said “we can build that ourselves, in house!”. Just from watching this video, that first cave/tunnel is way too low with too many projections downwards for use on an unpredictable water ride that doesn’t have clear controlled and calculated pathing. And the lift hill! OMG! Why would you let human beings within 100’ of such a horrifying device. Look at that lift hill. It was almost purpose designed to grab people, haul them underwater and mangle them like a farmers harvester. I’m just stunned at how anybody looked at that thing and said it was a good idea. That lift hill is what killed those park goers. Looking at it you can easily see how.

      OMG I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed the cave height! That's RIDICULOUSLY low! Cedar Point is my home park and Thunder Canyon is an Intamin build as well. Their lift hill is at the beginning in clear view of the operating platform. It also features that classic Intamin-style 'yoga mat' design cover for its conveyor. No obstructive caves or overhangs on the ride either. Shame.

    • @andrewtaylor940
      @andrewtaylor940 3 роки тому +3

      @@lilmoosic The yoga mat, or as I think of it, giant supermarket conveyor, that Intamin uses is meant to reduce the chances it can grab someone. It’s a big rubberized canvas belt with no sharp elements or open spaces to catch on people. The conveyer Dreamland used was some sort of industrial machinery of the sort found in the annual survey of “the Worlds most gruesome and horrifying workplace injuries”.

    Let me speculate if I may. The main water lift pump had overheated earlier in the day as reported by patrons and the news reports, say the lift pump overheated again and was not performing correctly, causing the water level to drop rapidly right as the empty pod ahead of the doomed one was exiting the conveyor. This could cause that pod to become beached, leading to the collision.
    If you look in the video to the right you'll see an extremely powerful water outlet just adjacent to the accident location. This zone will begin to drain first.
    Just a thought, as a structural engineer this re-affirms my duty to ensure the safety of all who use my structures.

    3:01 It was at this point here where the accident took place. The belt system ahead is obviously meant to take them up, the day of the accident, the water level was 3 times lower then what it is here. One of the pumps failed.

    Absolutely terrible what happened 😢

    • @Arcadora
      @Arcadora  2 роки тому +13

      It was actually the other end of the belt at 3:42 extremely sad. It flipped because there was an empty raft stopped in front of it. When it hit the empty raft, the belt kept moving and the raft full of people tipped.

  • @MaD707MaN
    @MaD707MaN 2 роки тому +8

    Most places would just use a big rubber belt that takes up rafts. With the design on this one it was only a matter of time before something went horribly wrong. Obviously there was other factors, but that non stop movement of big wooden planks being separated that far from one another is just asking for trouble. An engineer should have never signed off on that design.

    • @AA-he7xd
      @AA-he7xd 2 роки тому +1

      Apparently the maintenance team removed some of the wooden slats to reduce stress on the chains which drive it. That was against the manufacturer’s specifications, and it meant that it was now possible for the raft to be caught between the slats, which is ultimately what made it flip.
      A terrible act of stupidity and a disgusting lack of consideration for safety. All that mattered was that the old ride was working, regardless of its poor operating conditions.

    At 3:38 that's the view of the people who died. The vacant raft in which they collided is directly in front of them. Their raft collided, the front part lifted and overturned. The gap size was half this but they removed every other slat to reduce the weight thereby reduce strain on the system. Very bad idea. @@Arcadora No, it was caused by a water pump failure and sudden water level drop causing raft 6 to get jammed on the support rails. Raft 5 coming down the conveyor being occupied then ramming into it and lifting, and vertically sitting ito a gap at the end of the conveyor. An auto safety water level switch to shut the conveyor dow instantly on water level drop would have save their lives and should have been in place. The issue begins with bad design and inept enginering approval. The staff training was inadequate and the emergency stop if activated would have saved their lives, but automatic interlocks are far better than relying on humans after the peril begins. Raft 6 had being jammed for a minute and with proper staff training the Emergency stop could have been activated in this time would have saved them also. The main console stop button used when the rafts colided was a system shutdown that took 8 seconds. The Emergency stop would have stopped it in 2, but they needed to be pushed before the collision. The staff did not realise the danger coming.

The end part of this video shows the conveyor belt and shows this ride hitting the ride infront but for some reason theirs didnt flip like the ones who tragically passed, did.
