Okay I quite possibly may be nuts, at times I would agree. But I have decided to become a medical coder. I've started attending an online class from AAPC. I have found this course cross eyed difficult and at times screaming "what?" The weird part is I like it! I work 8 hrs a night, have just moved into a new house that I share with 2 cats and a special needs dog. The part that most find the real surprising part, I'm over 70 years of age. This stuff makes me fell young by challenging me. Wish me luck cause I'm going to try and pass the test by the end of the year. 2020 has stolen so much from so many but I'm going to make it a positive year for me!

To be fair I believe you give a very realistic view of this career. Those saying you sound negative seem to be romanticizing the idea of just becoming a medical coder and not having a realistic view. So when you come at them with "this is how its gonna be" you're kinda bringing them back down to earth and outta their heads which some types of people really don't like. You come off as very intelligent and informative. Thank you for the information. Now I know this isn't the job for me, which I'm happy to know before I drop the money on the schooling. Also your hair is gorgeous I'm a little jealous to be honest. 😁

Thank you so, so much for your comment!
There are a LOT of places out there that like to post photos of people sitting on the beach with computers and convince people they can just sign up for their training program and that will be them! I certainly don't want to deter anyone from getting in this career because it is super interesting and can be very lucrative, but there are a LOT of certified coders that were lured in, paid a ton of cash, and are extremely frustrated that they can't find a job. It's heartbreaking!

Actually, if you describe most jobs procedures, they sound harder than they really are.
Like most computer jobs, you'll be required to sit in front of a computer most of the day. You'll be required to make or received some phone calls and respond to emails and also attend meetings. Most jobs send email updates on procedures.
So even though she listed a lot of things, it's mostly standard computer stuff.
A great example would be to list everything a secretary does and her responsibilities and you'll assume they make 100k but they make way less.
Lastly, once you learn to code and get the hang of it, it's very robotic and monotonous job. After a few years of experience, making 60k for a 9 - 5 isn't bad especially if your gig is working from home. Only because you save a lot of money WFH due to not having to go to the office, gas, food, clothes, etc.
Don't be overwhelmed by her list of requirements and procedures. If you look at most jobs online, the requirements for the simplest jobs is long and sounds overwelming etc.
      Good luck, all! 👍

My most recent job made me miserable to the point that I couldn't function day to day. I had to quit, even without another job lined up. My wife who is an RN, suggested medical coding to me and this video has convinced me that I have the potential to be a great medical coder. I will always have doubts but if I keep working at it maybe with time it will be okay. :) April I am going to take my CMRS and later near August (We weren't told when) we will be taking our CPC with the AAPC. I'm in my 6th year as an MLT. This job is so stressful. It's similarly to coding in that we do a lot of investigative work and have to be accurate. We also have to deal with ethical dilemmas like nurses wanting us to run bad specimens. But we are always short staffed, you might have a coworker who makes you do all the work, you might be asked to do phlebotomy or cover things you're not trained to do. A lot of repetitive tasks. I like the idea of being at my computer all day and focusing on a few things. In the lab you're being asked to take care of 10 things all at once. There's also a limited career ladder for MLTs and MTs/CLS. I'm leaning more towards this.

Geez, nurses wanting to run bad specimens. That's insane. If they couldn't get a good specimen I would get it myself. But that's the phlebotomist in me. If I were you I would put your foot down. A good lab director should back you up. I am sorry you have put that much into MLT and aren't happy. Maybe you should take your talent to another lab?

As a person who is a bit dissatisfied with their current BS in Computer Science and Information Security, I am glad that I went to a webinar for MS for Health Information Management (HIM) which lead me to check out their certificates in medical coding. While I am still on the fence on whether I want to jump into a MS or a certificate program off the back of graduating by Fall of 2022, a certificate in Medical Coding seems to be more promising as I watch videos trying to understand the day to day expectations. It isn't much different from my standard coding classes (minus the fact that I haven't coded in C++ for about 2 years and all they use is Python to explain stuff that still doesn't make sense), but it none the less it seems to weigh it's positives from my general degree that I was originally going for. Thanks for uploading this video, I will very much be watching more of them as well as speaking to people from my college as to what would be best for me, in my own best interest :)

Everything you described aligns with my current job that I have been doing for four years, but my job doesn’t require certifications and doesn’t directly translate into other fields. This sounds like the perfect way to ensure I can find work in various institutions rather than being stuck where I’m at because I can’t market my skills into one job description. Thank you for explaining the expectations of this field!!!

I am in school online for Medical Billing and Coding and I definitely have no idea what I signed up for lol I am currently a certified pharmacy technician, graduated with a certificate in Administrative Medical Assistant, so I have had my share of run ins with the public and want a change. I was looking for a career in MBC thinking that it would allow me to work behind the scenes where I wouldn't have to deal with the public, but listening to all what the job entails has got me second guessing myself. I'm all for learning new things but this sounds tough. I'm gonna keep your videos in mind for when I start getting towards the end of school because I believe these videos will help out!

Sadly, no I'm not working in the industry. The best job I could get without certification was a front desk worker. The certifications are incredibly expensive, with no room for testing failure, and no refunds, either. Plus, all the larger medical facilities in my area all have the doctors using coding software themselves, rather than hiring a coder. It ended up being a dead-end, and now I have a bunch of student loans to contend with, as well. It ended up being a horrible mistake.

Maybe if you gave the same realistic information, but with a positive spin like, "but if you really buckle down, I know you can get through it like I did." Getting your certification is great. I passed the test a while ago. Coders passing the test think they're going to be instantly hired or marketable. The best way I can put it, sometimes it's like having a basic College Degree, does not guarantee you're going to get any job. Allow me to elaborate...After you receive your certification and you go on the interviews, you're still going to be given a coding aptitude test. You're going to say "What? I'm already certified" That is what coders are not ready for. Just because you're certified does not mean you're automatically a match for that specialty. With coding you just need to be on top of everything all of the time.

I am very interested in trying this new career path. Thank you for letting us know about the educational upkeep of this career. I had no clue, but I do think I would be well suited for this type of work.

I am about to enroll at Devry for medical coding and billing. I used to be a massage therapist, but ever since I was diagnosed with severe ulcerative colitis I haven't been able to work in that field again. I figured this type of job will be less taxing on my body. I do enjoy doing research, graphing and data entry. Hopefully I can do well in this field. I do have my doubts every now and then.

I'm currently a stay at home mom of three little boys. I started out as an administrative coordinator working with nurses, doctors and dealing with patients. I should have become a medical coder years ago but I didn't take the advice I was given. I regret it now . At almost 40 i'm ready for a career change.I enjoy your videos and content. I've decided to take medical coding classes online because my boys still need me. What online schools do you recommend. Budget friendly if possible but any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Hello! I am about to start my prerequisite training through AAPC. I really appreciate your videos and wondered if you've covered employer expectations? I want to work remotely and wondering if employers look for daily goals? Or weekly or monthly? Just hoping I can work flexible hours.

Would you happen to have a video on choosing the right certification programs/classes? It’s hard to tell what’s legitimate and what’s sketchy when dealing with online programs.
