the grounded data line from the ECU re-maps the acceleration curve to a lower power output. I've run my Vulcan S for the first 4 months with all the restrictions in place, and then removed the plug while keeping the bolt in place, and noticed a significant improvement in power and throttle response. After talking to a registered Kawasaki mechanic (not a salesman), he confirmed that grounded wire in the plug initiates an ECU mapping to align with Australian LAMS restriction.
And diagnostics port doesn't just mean "fault finding" the bike's systems. I is a direct data connection into the ECU. P/BL = Data+. LG/BL = Data-. BK/Y = GND. It can be used for retuning/remapping the ECU, accessories that require a data stream (i.e. aftermarket gear indicator), as well as diagnostics if you have the right equipment.
There's a lot of misinformation in this video.
Good to know.... I removed the bolt some weeks ago, and now will try the ecu plug.. thanks.
Thanks for allowing me to chat about the LAMS bike, specifically the Vulcan-S. It was enjoyable to talk to you about this subject and put good honest information out there. You have a great channel John, and trying to help people understand the Vulcan-S is a very admirable undertaking... Happy Holidays to all...
Thanks Allen! You do the research and know what you are talking about - a real asset to the channel mate!
@@Reubenn1 As I stated in the video... Kawasaki is grounding a pin at the ECU through that 4-pin wired cover plug... The Black/Yellow stripe wire is a ground on the Female Diagnostic plug (lower side). With the top wires connecting to that and crossing over to a pin that then leads to the ECU via the Pink/Blue striped wire. The Service Manual diagram clearly shows this wiring for the Diagnostic plug. Why Kawasaki is grounding a ECU pin, I do not know.
People in countries that have those restrictions need to call and ask their Kawasaki Representatives or Dealers... In America, the Kawasaki Technical Representative I talked to, knew nothing about LAMS bikes or Learner Approved Motorcycles. He only confirmed that the 4-pin plug is for Diagnostic purposes...
So, does grounding the ECU pin help or hurt performance?? I can not answer that question. We can debate, but the dealer in Australia stated clearly that they do not remove the wired 4-pin cover, and that on a dyno they used for testing the Vulcan-S -- it had no impact on the horsepower of the engine. Those are the only facts I have at this point.
As for digging a little deeper??? I have dug as deep as I can from here in the states, and looking at the Electrical diagrams in the Service Manual as provided by Kawasaki... From this point forward, I have nothing more to say or offer in this debate... You have the facts as they currently are...
