  • Scheider gained fame for his leading and supporting roles in several iconic films from the 1970s, playing Police Chief Martin C. Brody in Jaws (1975) and Jaws 2 (1978), NYPD Detective Buddy "Cloudy" Russo in The French Connection (1971), NYPD Detective Buddy Manucci in The Seven Ups (1973), Doc in Marathon Man (1976), and choreographer and film director Joe Gideon (whose character was based on Bob Fosse) in All That Jazz (which was written and directed by Fosse) (1979).
    Roy died in 2008 after a three year struggle with Multiple Myeloma.

    An absolute legend! Gut wrenching when you think Roy never got the recognition he truly deserved, when you see the fools who win awards / recognition these days.

      He should've won the Oscar for that. Roy never quite got the acclaim or high status that he deserved. Jaws was the movie it was because of Roy, along with many of his other films, he elevated them.

    It's been hard to find many interviews with Roy, much less ones where he's talking about "All That Jazz". Thanks so much for posting this! "All That Jazz" is one of the most dazzling movies I've ever seen. I was about 10 or 11 and on cable one night they played "All That Jazz" and then, directly, with maybe a 30 second station break between them, went directly into "A Clockwork Orange". I never left the couch that night, I was paralyzed, disturbed....and my mind blown. Try those two for a double feature one day!!!!!

    Great interview gives a real insight into Scheider as an actor he is part of the reason that all that jazz is a classic. Scheider had a very strong career and appeared in another near classic William Friedkin's Sorcerer.

    The 52nd Oscars had some great movies with truly great actors nominated for best performances. Athough Dustin Hoffman won, in my opinion Roy Scheider should have won for "All That Jazz." I consider his performance to be one of the greatest in all of cinema. And the competition was stiff that year, with Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, and Peter Sellers nominated as well. Ironically, people still watch and enjoy "All That Jazz," "And Justice for All," "The China Syndrome," and "Being There." But few watch "Kramer vs Kramer" today, which does not stand the test of time. Unfortunately, the awarding of Oscars is more based on politics than merit.

    • @ZeeHeche
      @ZeeHeche 3 роки тому +2

      Fantastic comment & one that deserves a thumbs up... competition was rife back then, but All that Jazz was definitely the better film.. Hoffmann is a good actor, but Scheiders portrayal of Fosse outshines Hoffman's in Kramer... Hollywood politics at play!!!! Scheider was known to give the middle finger to anyone he didn't agree with, at good cause! I honestly think he was blackballed by Universal after he left The Deer Hunter late into production. And rightly so..... script changes just before filming was to begin! Scheider believed in good story telling! And at the time... wasn't there just for the pay check!

      That's why I tend to not take the Oscars too seriously, I even have a book I read called alternative Oscars. It's fun to go back in time and see who won vs. who you think should have won. Many great films and performances aren't even nominated. I'm biased towards Roy but it's probably his greatest performance and had he won he would've fully deserved it. His performance is iconic and not only that but it's just a much better movie than Kramer vs. Kramer, it's really a no brainer to me.

    His films are always a joy to watch (what about Blue Thunder?). He nailed Fosse in All That Jazz. Masterful acting and genius casting of Scheider by Fosse. Can't imagine anyone else in the role. Stanley Kubrick called it "[the] best film I think I have ever seen". Pretty good endorsement!

    We must also appreciate some performances and / or movies in their passage through the 80s, and I think of Still Of the Night; The 52 Pick Up and The Fourt War. His adventures in films like Blue Thunder and 2010, or the fantastic neo noir that he composed in Cohen and Tate. From the 70s Sorcerer and Last embrace deserve a rediscovery, the former being a masterpiece

    A solid guy and a man's man, and a great actor. I only wish that Jaws 2 had never been made and that he wasn't contractually obligated to star in it, because it almost ruined the legacy of Jaws and put a stink on his career. Not enough to ruin him but a terrible movie and it's painful to watch, not just because it's horrible but you know he hated being in it, yet he doesn't phone in his performance, so that speaks to his professionalism.

    • @portjanka

      He also wasn't obligated to star in The Fourth War and yet he did. It was a sequel to the Jaws in which Scheider played the shark.

      I would think that Fosse would have had to reign Dreyfuss in. I imagine their separate takes on the character would have caused some conflict. From what I know (mostly from interviews and Fosse biographies) Scheider and Fosse seemed to click from the beginning.

      @@martinsorenson1055 Plus, physically it wouldn't have worked as well either....Dreyfuss was never in great shape...but he was already getting "puffy" from booze and coke....Scheider resembled Fosse more and he stayed in shape....probably a result of him continuing some of his old amateur boxing regimen later into his life.
