Netherlands has one of the most expensive travel system in Europe after Switzerland. The day/week pass for tram + Bus only allows you to travel in bus and trams. For all transport modes, there is another more expensive pass which allows you to travel in all modes of transport known as Holland Travel Ticket (70€/day) . Most likely you wanted to travel in NS train and that's why your pass didn't work as that's a separate organisation. The best thing for you would have been to just buy the individual tickets for NS Trains and Day passes for trams + Buses (30 eur for 3 days p.p). Also you could have easily avoided traveling by train and instead use metro and trams for traveling as the GVB network itself is very vast.

Hi. NS IC is Intercity, stopping at only cities, sprinter is the smaller train, similar to RE, stopping at smaller stations as well. Trams only are per city. Usually ppl have monthly passes - pay a certain amount of money at the beginning. What can/ cannot be used depends on the subscription package. Ppl only use trains to travel longer distances/ one city to another. Locals don’t use the public transport within the city at all ( very very rare) they only cycle. Public transportation is actually very straightforward, but very costly. It’s easier to cycle around the city, go from one place to another via cycles, which is what tourists also do
