I used to work for a radio station around the time A Rush of a Blood to the Head was released and was fortunate to meet Chris Martin and the other band members on two occasions. I still remember during the first occasion, he was snacking on a slice of leftover cake that was sitting out-in-the-open of the studio for 2 days and my co-worker and I didn’t have the heart to tell him because he was raving about how delicious it was on-air. On the second occasion, I met him outside of the building with a handful of fans. I was taking a pic of him with my flip phone. He noticed and ended up drawing a camera with my name and the title “The Photographer” on it. Chris was so nice and these encounters will be cherished forever.
Those are some good memories.

This is insane i was just binging on Coldplay
I, for one, wanted to hear why Chris Martin didn't agree and would have probably just latched onto whatever account seemed to have more explanatory power. That's the value of conversation for participants (and eavesdroppers like us), but ah, well...
Yeah, I wanted to hear his opinion too, _especially_ BECAUSE he disagreed (meaning he had different reasoning, which is more interesting than both of them saying the same reason). It was a very low-stakes conversation, not a heated debate that might become stressful.
But then again, it was really a lose-lose situation for Chris. 1) If he says that UK actors aren't better at interviews, he will anger the UK actors. 2) If he gives a reason why UK actors are better at interviews, he is painting US actors in a bad light. 3) He is a guest on a talk show (not a host), so he doesn't have the experience with actors that Conan has (if we wanted an answer, it would be better Conan asking it to other talk show hosts).

My opinion: 1) It is not a valid question. Conan is comparing the thousands of guests he's had to Richard Harris(a LEGEND, even in the UK!!) and other interviews that made an impact in his memory.
2) For UK actors to make it to his Latenight show, they had to be interesting enough to make it through the UK system (someone charming enough to rise through the theatre scene - which thins out the numbers. Then make it through the UK television, movie, and interview circuit - which thins out the numbers further). There ARE UK actors that are not good at interviews, I've seen a few. The movie production staff doesn't want to send them to the US to promote a movie. There are some US actors that ARE good at interviews. The full range (good to bad) exists in both places. For Conan to weigh the great UK interviews more heavily when comparing is going to have confirmation bias.
Robert De Niro (great actor) terrible interview guest. Tom Hanks, Chris Pratt, Jamie Foxx (they will show up, high energy, with an anecdote or idea in their back pocket).
Timothy Olyphant: more low-key, disarming, but still funny. Ryan Reynolds: a pro at the interview circuit (will have a story, but can also confident enough to improv in the moment).

Also, regarding US actors' reticence on talk shows: many of them really aren't very intellectual and they know it. They use the quiet demeanor to mask their insecurity, they don't want to be found out. It may not be always the case but in so many it obviously is. Many of the UK actors are genuinely wittier and have more confidence b/c of it.

Conan is right! American talk shows can be quite boring. It looks too scripted too serious. Where as of you watch Graham Norton you get exactly the opposite.

I see what Conan is saying. Americans tend to be more boastful, whereas Europeans are known to be a bit more modest and relaxed. Especially in Sweden where I’m from. It is very frowned upon here to show off and think you’re better than anyone else.

the edits in this disturb me. it seems like a single take and they barely move so it almost seems like a glitch in the matrix when you cut out the dead-air or 'umms.' i'd rather have the real long takes than this weird effect.
