Malachi the Nutcracker was a boxer who became a rapper to avoid jail after a judge made Primo put him in music because Premier came to speak for him at his trial. He lived on Premier block and was down with them but had never really rapped and didn't want to. Still made a classic album.

I absolutely detest any reaction video. As soon as I seen it was for this track I gave it my undivided attention. I’m 46 years old and I’m telling you this track (along with gang Starr hard to earn) was absolutely the soundtrack for the golden era of the 90s. I’m blessed to have came up in an era when shit was so wild (pre internet/smartphone). I understand and respect that it’s not 25 years ago and my son laughs occasionally telling me some of my shit sounds “dated”. Respectfully I know I’m an old fart but this shit here pioneered and paved the way for SOOOOO many people who got in,got on and kept over saturating the culture with bullshit. Thank God for DJ Premier. Laced EVERY SINGLE PERSON with outrageous beats and I was blessed to meet him in prospect park in 2007. Very intelligent, sincere man and as cool as you’d imagine. Thanks for acknowledging this track. It’s such an important classic and hopefully younger cats understand that life was nothing like it is today and just because the lyrics aren’t too wordy or dripping with fancy wordplay … understand that this was “that shit”. Peace and blessings ✌️

Google 1988 Hip-Hop albums. 1988 was the year Hip-Hop exploded. It was starting to get more attention and notoriety because of the cable TV explosion and nationally syndicated shows like Yo! MTV Raps and Rap City. A lot of Hip-Hop's most iconic albums came out that year. It was also the year that the west coast emerged as a powerhouse in Hip-Hop which had been dominated by the east coast. The east coast took a back seat to the west coast until 1994 when Nas, Wu-Tang and Biggie stepped on the scene. This was the beginning of what is regarded as the Golden Era in Hip-Hop. Eminem was the last Great Rapper to come out of that era. When the 2000s began the South was beginning to establish itself as the most influential coast in Hip-Hop.

Lil' Dap and Melachi the Nutcracker are Group Home. I think the '86 reference in this song is from Lil' Dap's personal history. Perhaps some of the references are about the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986, part of the "War on Drugs?"

Primo’s production on this album is arguably his best of all time. However, the lyrics weren’t up to par compared to Guru’s, Jeru‘s, Bahamadia’s etc. Dap’s rhymes are dope but Them Nutcracker verses were always too weak for me. The album proves that lyrics are important despite dope beats but because production is so damn good in this case, you can’t help to nod your head through every track.
