Did you get a good look at your Dad’s face when the tractor started running? The smile of accomplishment! Great video Dave, glad you got such a good deal and it’s running. Thanks for sharing with us.
Hey Fred! Yes it was sure a good time, we were all excited when we heard it fire up! I was glad to because my arm has cranked that baby for too long :D thanks for watching my friend! I hope to give you all some good updates, take care!
At the end that was a very slick start up. Just half a crank and she lit right off. Its amazing how you can still get parts for these ageless irons. Several years ago I bought an old 1941 9N Ford. I was really impressed that i found all the ignition parts, carburetor, along with a new distributor cap. Love these old tractors Dave glad you found this one. Thanks buddy.
Thanks Dean! It sure impresses me with how well it starts now, makes me happy knowing I get to bring it back into action! I’ve got the hood and tank stripped and painted, turned out pretty well! I’ve got a lot more yet to do haha. I always thought of trying to do an 8 or 9n but I’m thinking my next might be a super A Farmall or 140 :) I think I found a new hobby haha! Take care buddy
Thanks Dave for your video. I just picked up a 1948 Cub in Vt. and brought it to R.I. where I live. It's in very nice condition, no rust anywhere, including the battery box. It doesn't run, and no spark. I worked on it today in 30 degree temps. in my barn for 4 hours and finally have a nice strong spark. It will give me a little cough but won't run. The carb is all apart and in a carb cleaner bath for the night. I'll put it together tomorrow and check the firing order. Timing is perfect.. Hopefully it will run tomorrow. It was stored in a tractor collection in Maine for 25 years then in Vt. for another 10 years. I should have made a video but was in to much of a hurry to get it going before the real winter gets here. Take care and happy Holidays. Bob Leonard
Your welcome Bob! I appreciate the comment :) This Tractor has been great so far, fires within 4 cranks of the handle about every time! One thing I’ll tell ya because I do t remember if it was in the video but my firing order was right but no matter how many times I had verified the timing of the magneto I could never get it to fire the first plug first, long story short I believe somewhere between the crank and magneto it had been moved from factory settings and basically I just rotated plug wires one spot to get it to fire the proper cylinder! Best of luck to you, let me know if ya get it running, they sure are fun projects! I’m hoping to get a 140 next :) take care!
Great video 😊 Was worried for you because cranking in full-turns can be dangerous. Usually you should turn off the start switch, put on the choke and take 3 or more turns to put fuel in the cylinders, and then turn on the ignition, put on 2/3rds choke and take a half turn from bottom to top. Happy to see a cub revived!
Great job! I just picked up 1963 Farmall 140 that had been sitting for a year. New ignition switch, Carb cleaned, points cleaned and drained old fuel and added fresh fuel and she started! Keep up the good work.
Thanks Justin! Ah nice, I may look for a 140 next or super A! That is a nice tractor glad to hear you got it going! My biggest issue was ignition timing, for some reason I could not get the magneto to fire the right cylinder, I ended up just rotation plug wires to match but it thinking someone had the engine torn town before and didn’t put it back right? Either way I’m glad it’s running now haha! I appreciate the comment, take care!
Ohio Hill Tops Hobby Farm way to hang in there and not throw in the towel. Mine has been converted to an alternator at some point in its life so that’s a plus.
You know I don't know how to say it! I'm just so impressed of your determination a little hard work sure did pay off! And Fred your right I thought we just saw a miracle happen when that old iron fire up! Great job Dave 👍
Dave Holmes thank you!! I appreciate all the help with it, it has been a lot of fun working on it with you. Now we just gotta get you one, then we can tractor pull 😂😂 I sure am glad we got it going!
Thanks buddy! I was a little discouraged on this one at first, I really figured I would of had a lot more to do to it to get it to fire! I appreciate the support and positive comments, hope you all have a good weekend! Take care
If you go to the Farmallcub website you can get a rubber tip needle and seat which stops the notorious leak down and flooding. Had a 51 vub I completely restored and had for 20 years. They're great little machines
Thank you! I was excited to get it and get it fired up :) I appreciate the comment, thanks for watching! I’ll be sure to post updates with it in action!
Now you got me wanting to get our cub out. My dad made a 3pt hitch for it.Be careful with hand cranks. A lot of people have broke there arm. It sounds good. You got a good deal. Have a good week

Heard you can clean the trans really well by filling it with diesel and going through the gears, then draining again and filling with 80 W (some say hy-trans instead). That's a really nice tractor there. Running real well by the end!
Thanks for the tip! I know it worked pretty good as just a cleaner with the brush, I had a blast getting this tractor up and running! Made a fun project, thanks for watching!

IH did a recall on the gas cap a number of years ago, and the program is still being managed by Navistar. The replacement is free (although you find unscrupulous folks trying to sell them online) and you can request one at ihgascap.com. You probably already found a new oil filter, but the NAPA # is 1153. It includes a new rubber gasket. Great video!
Thank you! I’ll have to look into that :). Yes I need to do a filter change on it, I also need to order a head gasket and new studs to have it good as new. It runs great now but I’d like it fixed for good. Thanks for the tips!
