Regarding the actors struggling to find roles after being on a smash TV show, it's a real thing that persists even to this day in Hollywood. I grew up in a dysfunctional family. The Brady Bunch was both good and bad: Good, escapism. Bad, I actually believed that this was the norm for any family.
I too watched it all the time, but I hated how they seemed like such a perfect family, when I was a fatherless kid with no relationship with my older brother.

I've never seen the movies but with all this talk about it, I want to see both movies. The actress who played Cindy in the movie was on Will & Grace. Her character was hilarious! I've watched that episode many times & it makes me think of Cindy from the show!
You know your a great actor or actress when you absolutely HATE being there but can fool the entire world that you are happy as a lark and love being there.
Did you watch the Munsters in the mid 1960s? Fred Gwynne played Herman Munster. He hated the character he played too. I think you will find a lot of actors in a lot of series TV may have hated the part that they were playing but given the fact that was their "calling" and they needed the money to live they took the cash grab!
I loved watching this TV series in Australia. When I came home from school,I would put on the TV and watch The Brady Bunch everyday until the series finished. I was so disappointed that the show ended.
I know, I’m going to sound ignorant. But as an American, I didn’t even consider that ppl in other countries watched this show. I want to thank Australia for “Kath and Kim.” I discovered it several years ago on Netflix and OMG! That show is hilarious. I had to watch it with subtitles on in the beginning just because I wasn’t used to the strong accents but my ears adapted.
Never fails to amaze me how many actors and actresses don't know how good they have it until they leave and go nowhere career wise. Like the actress who played Tasha Yar on STNG. She left early by choice only to have the show go on to become a classic... great move.
What I found most funny, was a large portion of the "sample scenes" in the clips were actually from the 1990's Brady Bunch movies, which (obviously) didn't showcase any of the actors or actresses you were talking about while the clip ran! I mean, if you were talking about the 90s movies, that's one thing, but this entire video was about the original cast and yet you kept showing clips of completely different actors and actresses!
It seems more and more "creators" don't really care about quality. They just want views, likes and subscribers. You'd think they would understand the relationship. In the earlier days of youtube people would make actually series. Like TV sitcoms. With a storyline and high production values. I can hardly find any of those now. King of random is another channel that was pretty well thought out but, you can only mix vinegar and baking soda so many different ways. Lol.
the one thing I've thought about is how much longer before we hear on the news the passing of the "first" Brady kid. The youngest is Cindy (Susan Olsen) who turns 61 in 2022 and the oldest being Greg (BArry Williams) who will turn 68. I'm 55 and somewhat remember watching the last couple of seasons first run, but most of my exposure was reruns during the afternoons. Just another reminder that more years are behind me than ahead and need to cherish every moment left on this small blue marble.
A correction: A Very Brady Renovation was done in the house that was used for the exterior shots of the Brady house. It was never used as a set for the show, as the show was shot on a sound stage. An interesting fact about the show: Prior to The Brady Bunch, most married couples on TV shows were shown in twin beds during scenes that took place in a bedroom. At the time, network censors would not allow a couple to be shown together in the same bed, unless they both had at least 1 foot on the floor. Hence, twin beds for married couples! The Brady Bunch was the first show to ever have a couple in the same bed together, and many scenes showed Mike and Carol in their bed together.
Actually, the first sitcom to portray a couple sleeping in the same bed was Mary Kay and Johnny, which debuted in 1947. Also, Herman and Lily Munster were in bed several times a couple of years before The Brady Bunch.
@@Generatorman59 Thank you! People have been repeating this myth for years. After Mary Kay and Johnny, there were Ricky and Lucy, Ozzie and Harriet, Fred and Wilma (and presumably Barney and Betty!), the aforementioned Herman and Lily, Darrin and Samantha from Bewitched, and Oliver and Lisa Douglas from Green Acres...ALL before Mike adn Carol!! And that's just off the top of my head!!
I know, any of these actresses spent a week with my family back then, they would have run crying back to their tv family while begging to wear bras and glad they have more than 25 cents in their pocket and no black eye.
I hear ya. Same thing here. But I have weaponized it. I fear no living person. I don't fear death. I live five minutes from one of the most dangerous cities in America and no one tries to take my wallet or my car. They'd be fools to try. But if they tried I'd have me a good laugh.
@@p.d.l7023 That’s one of the reasons I started boxing at a young age .stupid never went to one of my fights. He got older and weaker. I got stronger and meaner .Still work out every day.
That "imposing innocence" is why the show is still popular today. Look at all the "controversial" shows of that era and see how many are still referenced today. While I agree with Maureen & Eve as struggling actresses, the saleability of the show over the long run was more important to the investors. As for Robert Reed working "below his talents," it should be remembered that he "starred" in Bloodlust (1961) which was not exactly a Tentpole film.
@@GGA007Gaming No, it means that I am really good at trivia and also remember when "the hottest show of the season" ended up running only six of its thirteen filmed episodes.
True. I have Gilligan's Island, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, Hogan's Heroes, and a few others from that era on DVD. I've shown most of them to my kids, and they love those shows. Sometimes it's just nice to have 20 minutes with some chuckles and simple plotlines with my family before bed without having to be harangued by the politics of the day or worrying that my kids are going to hear a bunch of gutter talk or sexual stuff going on.
We rushed home because we had no options to record then and watch later. If we had I feel sure we would continued on doing our thing. But you also have to remember the TV networks didn't play games with the episodes. Once that seasons shows had run it's course they restarted the season all over again. Now for only the networks reasoning they may reshow a last season episode but it will be the luck of the draw as to which episode that will be.
The VCR did not come out until about the year 1979. There were no recording devices for tv shows at that time. You can only watch shows as they were being aired or forget it.
It seemed like that show was around for more than 5 years. It's totally believable that there was so much rebellion on the show since it was a sign of the times from 1969-1974.
I don't undersrand the big deal about bras. Such a double standard there because is no different than Michael Landon from Little House not wearing underwear. Nobody told him to wear underwear or patted him down.
@@WisdomOverWicked777Rules Settle down. It's common knowledge, several cast members have talked about him drinking whiskey from a coffee cup on the set.
To be honest maybe I'm a person who took up drama class and had some friends who dreamed of breaking into show business and I always found myself somewhat surprised when you see celebrities who are not pleased even after they got these big roles
Same thing I was thinking. They sound like a bunch of ingrates to me. That was always my opinion of "Marsha" anyway. Didn't know "dad" was so fussy a little priss too. At least Alice wasn't a malcontent.
The grass is always greener. Sure, people make more money in bigger projects, but they're still human beings. Once the glamor wears off, people go back to being who they are, which includes sometimes frustration and pettiness. This is certainly more true for kids than adults since status is always relative and they have no life experience to tell them that they're in a good place. Besides, it's not like they're able to spend the money they earn on things they want. It's basically just living life like always in school, where someone else is responsible for your entire schedule.
I used to be a photographer in LA. It would mildly annoy me that many celebrities didn't seem to appreciate their acting success. I think it' partly due to everyone around them inflating their heads.
@@markberryhill2715 Ann B. Davis had done comedic work before. Robert Reed wanted to be seen as a dramatic actor. Which is too bad. I have great respect for an actor that can step outside their comfort zone. Larry Hagman made us laugh and everyone love him as CPT (and later MAJ) Anthony Nelson but made us hate and (if we are being honest) fear him as J.R. Ewing.
@@russellcurtis2501 he (LH) was a great actor like his mom. I only remember her as a kid from appearances on variety shows, but after seeing her on Broadway(from You Tube) I see how talented she was, and where he got his talent.
In the immortal words of Ernest Borgnine, (paraphrased) "Acting is a great opportunity and one should feel lucky when afforded that opportunity. Think about it, you could be digging ditches for a living. Which would you prefer digging ditches or acting? I am pretty sure the guy digging ditches on a construction site would love to trade places." At the peak of the show's run, each child actor received a salary of $1,100 per week in the 1970s according to Celebrity Net Worth. That is $4K per month in the 1970s... These kids made more money than the average two-wage earner family income.
It's a shame some of the actors were so against the script or direction of the show, since it was basically popular because of the way it was written and acted out. I grew up with this show, everybody I knew loved it.
I grew up with this show, too. I suggest you keep in mind that a channel such as this one is not likely to make a video about all the classic show cast being pleased about its writing. A channel like this thinks controversy sounds more interesting and will get it more views.
@@dzanier She was coming of age right in the middle of the sexual revolution. The Manson Family murders occurred about the time the show debuted and just a couple of years after the series ended, Roman Polanski (who Hollywood still worships) drugged and raped a 13 year-old girl. Thinking "swingers" would be a good story line is actually pretty tame, for the period!
At the minimum at least tell the truth. AIDS killed Robert Reed, not alcoholism It's a shame we didn't get more brawless episodes.😏 Maureen was in a very enjoyable movie with Lorenzo Llamas called "Take Down".
In November 1991, Reed was diagnosed with colon cancer. When he became ill, he allowed only his daughter Karen and actress Anne Haney, a close friend, to visit him. Haney later said of Reed, "He came from the old school, where people had a sense of decorum. He went the way he wanted to, without publicity." Weeks before his death, Reed called Henderson and asked her to inform the rest of The Brady Bunch cast that he was terminally ill. He died on May 12, 1992, at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, California, at age 59
It's been secretly said that Robert Reed was gay, Maybe the colon cancer got its start when he had his misadventures with other men having a lust for his backside.

I had a big crush on Eve Plumb Marcia is my age, I am 5 months older. So Eve was the average age difference when I was in High School. I noticed in a few episodes they seemed to not be wearing bras then almost all the girls at school didn't either. It wasn't a big deal in the 1970s
So did I, during the last couple of seasons of the show I only watched to scope on Eve Plumb. I had the biggest crush on Jan. Think I still do whenever I look back.
@Kirk Morrison @The Black Sheep me three Eve Plumb was my favorite actress on the show also and yes when she was older I focus on her instead of Maureen
Exactly. During the summer and even in school nobody really cared. Somewhere in the 80s into the 90s they did. I’m not sure what cause the girls to be so aware and self conscious after a while. I honestly still don’t care I think it’s not a big deal if a female is braless
It makes it very hard to swallow any of the information you present here as facts when you willingly intercut several scenes from The Brady Bunch Movie (1995) throughout this video that had completely different actors.
I grew up with the show as well. Absolutely loved it as a kid. While it is really kind of sad and disheartening to learn about the bts problems the production had, it is far from surprising. TV shows that have ensemble casts with children often do have creative differences, personality clashes, and drug and alcohol issues amongst various cast members. Being part of a cast of a weekly TV show can be heard, arduous work as it is but, being a child on a TV show can be that much more stressful since you are still a child thus still growing up. Not many child actors survive it and come out the other end as working actors, most get out of the business and go on to other things, often while still having or having gotten past drug and alcohol addiction. It's rough, I really feel bad for them.
At 0:50 it says Carol and Mike were "two widowed parents". They actually never revealed her status during the show. Producers have indicated that she was divorced, but it wasn't ever mentioned during the show.
She DID do a fun little episode of Happy Days...which completes PART 1 of my THREE PART (ESSAY) trivia question - "Complete the Brady Bunch/Happy Days Connection"... And she actually appeared on The Love Boat FIVE times....in fact, CMs from the Brady Bunch appeared more than TWENTY times on The Brady Bunch.... BUT..(trivia Q time again!!) WHICH of the main BB CMs did NOT get to sail on The Love Boat??? I"ll give you a hint....there are THREE!!!
Lost in Space, Brady Bunch, Hogan's Heros, Star Trek, the Pre-LGBTQIA+ days of the USA were awesome. Balanced budgets, protected borders, affordable homes, affordable education, etc..
Reed was written out of the script ("Mike" was on a business trip during Greg's graduation...does the perfect father do that??? No.) AFTER he complained bitterly about the wacky hijinx in the season finale. There are several rumors about what MIGHT have happened had the BB been renewed for a sixth season and returned in the fall of 1974...but we'll never know...
Big deal...did anyone wear a bra in the early 70s??🤣🤣🤣. Compared to today's issues that's a laugh 😃. Grew up watching this and enjoy it now for nostalgia and escapism. A relief from the crass comedy of today - amd an example of how to be funny withhout being vulgar and gratuitous.....Thank you!
I think it was a show that was popular because it appealed to people's desire to go back to a "more innocent" time after the tumult of the 1960s. As a teenager, I watched it because I had the hots for Marsha. I actually have more respect for the actors recognizing the poor quality of the show. I mean, not every show has to be "Roots" but there were far better shows as the decade went on that at least has some resemblance to reality.
I don't think I would have liked Mike and Carol being swingers either. They did that with Donna's parents on That 70s Show. It just felt like lazy writing and trying to shock people for the sake of it.
Mike and Carol becoming swingers.....Hot dogs, anyone?! How about some *pot* cookies? Jan staying out all night.....with Billy Garst, the most popular boy in school? "Jan, why did you do it?!" "Because Marcia, Marcia, Marcia had a boy in her bed!" Oh, Marcia *cue the sad outro music*.
How is that title image not taken down? I mean, thank you for using it! And please dont let it be taken down! But wow! Its surprising! I assume its a fake right? Anyone know if that is real, like from a 70’s adult magizine or something?!
My ex strongly resembled Maureen so much so that we’d see people staring at her and doing that look away whisper thing, then look back. We weren’t much on TV back then, so we had no idea till someone ask if she was Maureen. Then the light came on.
Well, at least Maureen was wearing bloomers on intro pic... LoL...All the rebelling.. Isn't that called being a teen... especially in those days..I was entering my teens at that point...I had moved on bigger fish..like Emergency with Randolph Mantooth😍🤩🤠 and Welcome back Kotter

@@thefurrybastard1964 Apparently, you have Mixed the Parody "sequel" movies with the Series, much like the Video above. There are 2 Backgrounds to Carol, neither were used in the series nor in the Actual sequel movies, but the Husband was named Daniel Martin. This differs from 'The Brady Bunch Movie' line, which had Roy Martin. The "stranded on a small island with a group of people" is a Joke reference to 'Gilligan's Island' in 'A Very Brady Sequel', keeping with their running jokes.
You neglected to mention that the actor that played the father was also gay and it was quite scandalous back in the day. He had to understand he played a typical father that was quite shocking to us
I have often thought that many long running shows, never allow for child actors to actually grow up, I praise them for their rebellion, you can not remain a child forever.
They should have done a show with Robert Reed trying to pick up guys to corn hole at city park restrooms. Realistic reflection of his life and a sure ratings grabber. Maureen would have been happy with the more adult content.
Here's an episode-arch idea: Mike has invited his "golf buddy" over for dinner a couple of times and the kids start calling this "friend" "Uncle Ron." Carol is impressed with his table manners and overall (too) clean appearance. Even Cindy comments on "Uncle Ron's" charm and demeaner. Thrilled, Carol encourages Cindy to remember the qualities she sees in "Uncle Ron" as she gets older and when she starts looking for a husband. Later Carol begins to dabble in Ron's personal life by setting him up on dates with suitable single women she knows. But the dates go badly, leaving her perplexed and ultimately blames the women for their shallowness, and lack of maturity and insight as to what a great catch this world traveled, handsome, successful architect-engineer is. (He's so "clean" too!) In a latter episode, she's stunned when she finds Mike's golf bag in the garage after the two leave for their golf game. Mike casually explains that when they got to the golf course and he realized he forgot his clubs, they decided to use the country club's tennis courts and go for a swim. Carol dutifully apologizes for any "questions" that had crossed her mind. (But she's still quite certain he's wearing a different shirt from when he left. She surmises that he must have changed clothes after their swim.) Roll Credits, Cue closing theme song....
That's right...whether she'd be wearing a bra, or not!😁😁😁! Seriously, though, the truth should always be told... even if it's so ugly and graphic, that it'd make people sick, upon knowing it!

Regular people do that every single day at their jobs
I KNEW I wouldn't have to comment because surely someone else would first! Interesting info but poorly executed!
This editor is an idiot
It seems more and more "creators" don't really care about quality. They just want views, likes and subscribers. You'd think they would understand the relationship. In the earlier days of youtube people would make actually series. Like TV sitcoms. With a storyline and high production values. I can hardly find any of those now. King of random is another channel that was pretty well thought out but, you can only mix vinegar and baking soda so many different ways. Lol.
I grew up with the Brady Bunch and loved the show!
I remember it and the Partridge family
I was born in 83 & watched all those shows in the early 90s
I think almost every kid growing up wished that the Brady bunch was their family, too. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
the one thing I've thought about is how much longer before we hear on the news the passing of the "first" Brady kid.

Lucy and Desi were actually married and they still had twin beds.
No, My three sons showed Robbie and his wife in bed before the BB was on air and there were others before that.

The fact that you know about the controversial ones means people do talk about them.

Maureen thought Mike and Carol becoming swingers would of been perfect for the series, lmao!!!
This is back when , kids ran home at a certain time in the evening to watch their favorite show . 70’s TV was the best tv ever !!
Dallas, Love Boat, Charlie’s Angels and several more were really good! And of course, All in the Family!!
70’s and 80’s TV was the golden era.

Mike has invited his "golf buddy" over for dinner a couple of times and the kids start calling this "friend" "Uncle Ron." Carol is impressed with his table manners and overall (too) clean appearance.
(He's so "clean" too!)
In a latter episode, she's stunned when she finds Mike's golf bag in the garage after the two leave for their golf game. She surmises that he must have changed clothes after their swim.)
Roll Credits, Cue closing theme song....
That's right...whether she'd be wearing a bra, or not!😁😁😁!
