I feel like this is one of the animes that really gets better the deeper in you go, the story is actually quite good and it lays it out nicely.
Like it just gets more and more complete for each episode.
I think getting a job was good for Hananoi. As we see, he doesn't really get along with other guys. Having a male co-worker and a man as a manager can help more with his social skills and making friends. Help him see and realize that not all guys are trying to take his girl from him. There are actually guys out there who want to get to know him and be his friend. Like Hotaru did when she first met her friend when she was younger. Also, Kyo is kind of like me. When I was younger I was terrified of dogs. Now, I love them. But I'm a cat person. I guess I love both.
I agree tho while its super awkward with him working there especially since Hotaru is aware that it is for her especially since he likes books and he loves the store I think its not a bad thing. It could help him to expand his connections and open up to people. I really love Yao and his approach to things as well he realizes that his mere existence is a cause for tension but he adapts his way of socializing to that and approaches Hananoi with no ill will. Honestly I love Hananoi but Yao is best boy.
I think that Yao DOES want Hinase. I fully expect Yao to try to break Hinase away from Hananoi. Also the manager WAS being an ass by essentially reprimanding Hananoi for goofing off with his girlfriend before he had clocked in his first hour. That is toxic behavior for a manager. Yes he SHOULD assume that the manager doesn't like him and if this were to happen to someone in real life they had better start a file in case there are other unwarranted actions that could impact their job evaluation.

15:05 "Back then why did I..." The way it's presented it's easy to assume that he DID something but it could also be "why did I not say anything". My personal theory (with nothing strong to back it up) is that he liked her and bought gifts that he didn't give her so into the Shrine they went. We see a wrapped gift and a plushy keyring for sure. (If I recall correctly he didn't tell her NOT to open the Shrine but told her to be sure she was ready to see what was there before she opened it. At least it's not as bad as Rudy's Shrine and Holy Relics.)
I wont talk about this reveal or what even possible implications are but the shrine, him knowing her birthday and hiding the yearbook were all hints and Im glad its out there now. To be honest, if Hananoi was a really bad person the whole quit your job dont do this and all that would be a thing like jokes aside but while his behavior is the brightest red flag ever Hananoi is self-aware about how wrong it would be to hold Hotaru back and so thats why even though he does warn her that he is possessive he never tells her or imposes any restrictions on her. I dont really like to call Hotaru oblivious she kinda is but naive is a better word because she is aware that there is something off with Hananoi's desire to be with her at work and she recognizes the tension between Hananoi and Yao but she doesnt have a good read on how intensely he feels. Hananoi has been so attention deprived by the people who should be giving him attention that now he wants someone who will devote themselves to him 100% to him which is not possible. He really needs therapy to be honest both Hotaru and Hananoi need it but I hope Hotaru will have a positive impact on his mindset.
yeah IRL some of these scenes are huge red flags. but as fiction i also identify with hananoi so.
I don't know why, but i have the feeling that in this episode they used the same seiyuu for both Hotaru(Girl) and Hotaru(Dog) just to have a laugh, or maybe budget, or maybe both.
When Hotaru rold the guy to stop calling her hotako he didn't listen but when hananoi told him to he listened, wth was up with that?
Hananoi and Hinase are both damaged individuals. Hinase was betrayed by a friend and withdrew before a new friend pulled her back. Hananoi has abandonment issues AND stunted interpersonal relationship skills because his parents (as his grandmother said) essentially abandoned their own child to treat children overseas. He never even sees them. It is no wonder that he is clingy and that his One Wish of Hinase is "don't leave me behind (like my parents did)".

You may think Hananoi needs work, but Yao is a real threat. He liked and still likes Hinase and was physically pursuing her when she was leaving work until stopped by Hananoi. He even named the damn _dog_ after her. There is no reason that Hananoi should trust Yao at all. I don't think it was an accident that Yao invited Hinase over and then as if it were an after thought said that Hananoi could come _too,_ like "she's going to come whether you come or not, bro."
I fully expect Yao to use the fact that they were all at the same middle school to try to drive a wedge Hananoi and Hinase.
